African-born Australian athletes at the 2024 Paris Paralympics are exemplifying incredible resilience and achievement across various sports. Here's a look at some of those remarkable athletes:

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Alex Saffy: Born in South Africa, Alex, nicknamed the "Bunbury Bullet," moved to Western Australia in 2013. Diagnosed with dyskinetic cerebral palsy, he transitioned from able-bodied swimming to Para-swimming. He made a strong international debut in 2022, winning bronze at the World Championships and silver at the Commonwealth Games. He continued his success with another bronze in 2023, making him a rising star in the sport.

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Alissa Jordaan: Born in South Africa and raised in Australia, Alissa started athletics early, excelling in international competitions. She won gold and two silvers at the 2017 World Junior Para-Athletics Championships. She set an Australian record in the T47 400m in 2021 and reached the finals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, establishing herself as a leading sprinter.

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Katja Dedekind: Born in South Africa, and raised in Queensland, Katja made a stunning debut at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, winning bronze in the 100m backstroke S13. She won two more bronzes at Tokyo 2020, including setting a new Australian record in the 400m freestyle S13, solidifying her reputation in Para-swimming.

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Mischa Ginns: Born in South Africa, Mischa moved to Australia in 2008. After a spinal injury in 2012, she spent years in rehabilitation. In 2022, she found new passion in badminton, quickly progressing to compete in the 2024 BWF Para Badminton World Championships. She aims to compete in Paris and inspire others to engage in sports.

Jewish groups in Australia are calling for the government to ban American Christian conservative commentator Candace Owens from entering the country for her scheduled speaking tour in November 2024. The demand follows accusations of antisemitism and her outspoken opposition to U.S. funding of Israel's war in Gaza, which have sparked backlash within Jewish communities.

Owens, a well-known author, activist, and YouTube personality, has built a substantial following through her right-wing views and frequent criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement. Once a prominent figure in mainstream conservative media, she parted ways with the far-right media outlet, The Daily Wire, amid reported tensions over her stance on Israel and clashes with the outlet's Jewish-American co-founder, Ben Shapiro, a former employee of far-right media outlet, Breitbart.

Despite her departure from The Daily Wire, Owens has maintained and even expanded her global audience through her own media platforms.

Candace, a New York Times bestselling author, has planned a tour that includes stops in both Australia and New Zealand, aimed at addressing "Christians" and "Conservatives," as highlighted in a promotional video she shared on Instagram.

Critics of those calling for a ban on Owens have labelled them hypocritical, noting the lack of opposition to other far-right speakers, including those associated with the Israeli government, which has been accused of genocide by the International Court of Justice.

The Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, said he will personally review the visa application of Candace Owens ahead of her Australian speaking tour in November.

What do you think? Should Candace Owens be allowed in for her speaking tour in Australia and New Zealand?

Essendon Football Club, once known for its flair and the brilliance of Indigenous players, has seemingly lost its spark, adopting a more textbook, private school style of play. But the disappointment doesn't end there. After a devastating loss to the Suns, where Mac Andrew's after-the-siren goal sealed the match, the ugly side of the game reared its head. Andrew, a talented young player who has already faced racist abuse earlier this season from Brisbane fans, was once again targeted by vile, racist comments from Essendon fans.

This isn’t the Essendon we want to support. The lack of excitement on the field is overshadowed by an even darker issue off it. There’s no place for racism in our game, and it’s time for the club and its fans to reflect on how far we've strayed from what truly matters. It's time to bring back the flair, the excitement, and most importantly, the respect. 🖤❤️

In recent years, social media platforms have shown they can decisively censor content during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war on Ukraine and Palestine. However, the current far-right riots in the UK reveal a troubling inconsistency. Despite their capabilities, platforms are allowing far-right rhetoric and misinformation to spread unchecked.

Why is this harmful content allowed to fester? It’s time for social media companies to adopt a consistent and transparent approach to content moderation. The stakes are too high to ignore.

For six years, we've chronicled Yual Reath's journey from school to the Olympics. 🌟

In 2019, he declared, "I will work very hard to make the Olympics." Last night, he competed in the High Jump at Paris 2024. 🇸🇸🇦🇺

Born in South Sudan and emigrating to Australia as a child, Yual worked as a landscape gardener to support his family while training in the evenings. 🌍✈️

In 2023, he quit his job to chase his Olympic dream. He achieved a personal best of 2.30 meters, equal sixth on the Australian all-time list. 🏆🇦🇺

Though 2.20 meters wasn't enough to make the finals in Paris, Yual's journey is one of resilience and triumph. This is just the beginning. 🏅✨

In his fifth Olympics, Patty Mills, who turns 36 on 11 August, delivered a gallant performance, scoring 26 points in the Boomers' overtime loss to Serbia in the quarter-finals. Mills, the second highest all-time points scorer for the Boomers behind Andrew Gaze, has cemented his legacy as one of Australia's basketball greats.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Arisa Trew from Queensland, made history by becoming Australia's youngest gold medalist, winning the women's park skateboarding event with a spectacular final run that earned her a score of 93.18.

Born and raised in Algeria, Imane Khelif has faced unimaginable hurdles on her path to becoming an Olympic boxer. Despite systemic challenges, she remains a beacon of hope for many. 💪🏽✨

Critics like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and J.K. Rowling have baselessly questioned her gender, revealing a desire to police women’s bodies. Meanwhile, they ignore the inclusion of born male transgender woman Laurel Hubbard, the ban on French female athletes who wear the hijab, and the advantage of Michael Phelps' genetics in the Olympics. These critics also ignore the inclusion of athletes like convicted child ra**st Steven van de Velde who is currently competing at the Paris Olympics.

IOC President Thomas Bach states, “Imane is born a woman, who has been raised a woman, who has a passport as a woman, and who has competed for many years as a woman. And this is the clear definition of a woman. There was never any doubt about [Imane] being a woman."

Imane’s journey is about fighting for dignity, respect, and the right to compete as oneself. True strength lies in the courage to defy the odds and remain unapologetically oneself. 💫

Australia's Olyroos exited the under-23 Asian Cup without a win or goal, failing to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics after losing to Indonesia.

Criticism has targeted coach Tony Vidmar, particularly for excluding 18-year-old prodigy Nestory Irankunda, a key player in the A-League who recently signed with Bayern Munich.

Vidmar cited "protection from emotional strain" as the reason, a decision that has faced backlash for potentially costing the team dearly at the tournament.

Adelaide coach Carl Veart clarified that Nestory was never formally approached to join the squad, despite rumors suggesting otherwise, leading to unwarranted calls for his sanction from some clubs.

Earlier incidents, like an unfair red card, have also highlighted challenges in managing young talent in the league, underscoring the need for better protection and integration of emerging players in pursuit of international success.

🌍🏀 Exciting News! South Sudanese international and former Sydney Kings player, Jackson Makoi, has signed a one-year deal with the Cairns Taipans!

At only 23 years old, Jackson has already competed on multiple international stages, including high school basketball in the USA and playing professionally in Croatia. Now, he's gearing up to represent South Sudan at the upcoming Olympics in Paris.

After 150 years, the UK is "returning" the Asante Empire's stolen treasures to Ghana — but only on a loan. This decision includes 32 priceless gold and silver artifacts, deeply intertwined with the spiritual and historical identity of the Asante people.

These artifacts are being loaned for an initial period of three years, potentially extendable, and are set to be displayed at the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi, Ghana as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the current Asante King, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

While this might seem like a gesture of goodwill, it falls short of genuine restitution. The UK's choice of a loan over a return allows them to maintain ownership of these artifacts, reflecting an ongoing colonial mindset that values bureaucratic convenience over ethical considerations.

The artifacts were looted during colonial wars in the 19th century, yet today, their return is entangled in legalities that prioritise British museum policies over justice for historical wrongs.
