“Have you ever followed a celebrity online, whether a musician, actor, or even an internet personality, and felt you knew them? Maybe a smaller “micro-influencer” lived in your area and made you feel you knew them.

On a smaller scale, this user-to-creator connection may just be innocent, like someone you look up to, relating to the creator’s style, or just for fun. But in some instances, it can develop into a “parasocial relationship.”

The term “parasocial relationship” has been around since the 1950s, and it has recently been popularized on social media apps, like TikTok. Currently, when users mention the phrase, it refers to a one-sided relationship formed with media personas.“ - Words by Riley (she/her) 21 USA

“The moment you step into your twenties, it can feel like an invisible clock starts ticking in the background. Its relentless rhythm becomes a constant reminder that you’re supposed to be hitting certain milestones. With each passing year, the ticking seems to grow louder, and the pressure to achieve only intensifies.

When are you going to buy a home? When are you going to get married? When are you going to have kids?” - Words by Zoe (she/her) 26 QLD

“This past summer, I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to study abroad in London, England. This was the first time I’ve ever been able to experience another culture, let alone another country. Despite writing for an Australian-based publication, I was born and raised in Florida, USA, and honestly, I haven’t traveled much outside of that. So, when the opportunity to study abroad presented itself, I knew I had to take the leap.” — Words by Riley (she/her) 21 USA

🚨 Content Warning 🚨

“I sit crossed legged, gazing up at the amour she has built

Draped as a hard exterior masking from the shame, sorrow and guilt

For the tale of the vulnerable seems to shake the fierce identity

So, she keeps a distance, keeping up appearances and pretending to be

A okay, focused and set towards her achievements and goals

Blissfully unaware of the storm brewing that takes on the controls

Whispering sweet nothings of temptation and paranoia

Distorting the perspective of reality for her

Leaving the demons to let loose in and amongst the air

Destructing the foundations leaving behind the remnants of despair” - Words by Eva (she/her), 27 UK

“To that little girl,

Girlhood is a time that is supposed to be filled with innocence, wonder, and the thrill of discovering the world. It’s a period that should be marked by joy, friendship, and the energy to explore everything around you. It’s meant to be a time when scraped knees and shared secrets amongst friends will be your biggest concerns. A time to laugh, cry, and grow without the weight of the world on your shoulders.

But girlhood will not be that simple for you.

Alongside the happy memories, you will face challenges that no child should have to bear. You will walk through a world that expects you to navigate a confusing maze of contradictions, societal pressures, and the objectification of your body long before you’re ready.

You will be pulled from the innocence of childhood into a world that demands you become a woman before you’ve had the chance to truly be a girl.” – Words by Zoe (she/her) 26 QLD

“Due to a stunning combination of genes, traits and DNA mixing together, I was graced with a gap tooth. Right in between my two front teeth.

So big that one of my other teeth didn’t have enough room to grow in, resulting in a permanently asymmetrical mouth. Lucky me.

I danced through kindergarten to 4th grade blissfully ignorant of this flaw, interested only in what kids are interested in – getting dirty, and playing with dolls, and learning my times tables.

What business does a child have analysing their mouth?

Counting their teeth to ensure that they are all there? All in uniform? All in place?

In pictures I grinned my giant toothy grin, unashamed and unabashed. I tilted my chin up to the sun, closed my eyes, and let my mouth stretch so wide that my cheeks hurt when I was done.

But then it was like one of those camera flashes reset something in my brain and I gained consciousness.” — Words by Sochi (she/her) 18 NSW

🚨Content Warning🚨

“মেয়ে (Mēẏē) (girl) standing tall and strong, yet built out of fear

Clasping tight onto their guns, unable to shed a tear

Vicious in their nature yet kind in their souls

Unable to unwrap just hiding against a disguise that cannot expose

The truth of pain that led us to today’s victory

Instead it remains another মেয়েরা (Mēẏērā) (girls) untold story locked in history.” - Words by Eva (she/her), 27 UK

“What’s this? A seemingly positive article about the use of AI within journalism, or so it seems…

ChatGPT wrote that entire first paragraph. I put in the prompt “Introduction paragraph for an article about the rise of AI in the journalism industry. make it professional but fun.”

ChatGPT began rising in popularity for me during the spring of 2023, and all the students in my class began to use it to get through their assignments easily. On the surface, AI can be a helpful tool to speed up the process of day-to-day tasks without much afterthought. For example, my mom is a real estate agent who uses AI to help with social media, posting captions, and writing summaries for her listings.

While simple tasks seem to be no harm or foul, what about those making “taking the AI to the next level” a little too far?” — Words by Riley (she/her) 21 USA

“Neurodivergent brains develop differently to Neurotypical brains. But Neurodivergent brains also develop differently to each other – there is no single blueprint for Neurodiversity. In fact, there’s multiple types of Neurodiversity, even beyond Autism and ADHD.

Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia are not nearly as rare as our pitiful lack of knowledge about them seems to suggest. Each are very real types of Neurodivergence that are often incorrectly conflated or entirely overlooked.”

“The only thing I could see was the little flames dancing in between my moms’ hands.

In a living room full of darkness, the loud voices of my family were the main focus, singing an uncoordinated attempt of “Happy Birthday” while my mom, with a sweet smile, placed the big white cake in front of me. I stared at it for a long minute while my aunts filled their camera rolls with blurry pictures of my lost eyes counting the number of candles firmly fixed on the cream – an amount big enough to make me worry about my achievements in life.” - Words by Rossana (she/her), 23 Mexico

“Your youngest cub clutched close to chest

Finding ways to nuzzle into her father’s warmth to rest

Amongst his shield safety and protection bold to stand

Remains a father’s love centred at the palm of your hand

Close to your heart, your bacha (বাচ্চা/ child) always held on tight

You keen to watch over her and to never lose sight

But you couldn’t predict that she’d pick you up at your lowest

Racing to the phone, aged 7, because she had noticed

That you needed her to hold you against the grains of sand

Leading you to safety amongst the backdrop of the unplanned ” - Words by Eva (she/her), 27 UK
