Emeritus Professor Byron Kakulas AO was not only one of the most caring, passionate & intelligent people we’ve ever known, but he also changed the world. With the heaviest of hearts, we come to terms with his passing last Wednesday 🤍

In 1960 Prof made a breakthrough that changed millions of lives across the globe by discovering the total regeneration in skeletal muscle tissue in quokkas suffering from paralysis. It was a massive finding & showed the potential for all muscle diseases (including muscular dystrophy) to be treatable, prompting worldwide research in this field.

He continued to invest his whole life into research & treatments for all neurological conditions & his immense dedication saw him work well into his 90 years.

Prof founded our organisation in 1967 (then known as the Muscular Dystrophy Research Association of Western Australia) to raise funds to advance research into neuromuscular conditions – to put it simply we wouldn’t exist today without him.

His research led to us becoming beneficiaries at the first Telethon7 Perth which continues to this day & in 1982 with Mr Ian Passmore & Mr John Hollingshead he established Australia’s first Neuromuscular Research Institute – now known as the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science.

Prof then went on to establish the world’s first carrier detection & genetic counselling program in WA which lowered the incidence of new MD cases by more than half. On top of this he was the first to identify Inclusion Body Myositis as an entity & his defined principles of myopathy have become the standard of teaching worldwide.

We are so very grateful for the enormous contributions Prof made to our community & people across the globe. He will be dearly missed.

We send our utmost love & sympathies to his wife Valerie, children Phillip, Felice & Carolyn, his grandchildren Bronte, Karlo, Jess, Niko, Kate, Theo & Leah & his great-granddaughter Nina 💜

The fun, free community event will be held on Thursday 1 December at the Gary Holland Community Centre, 19 Kent Street, Rockingham.

• microenterprise stalls.

We had an amazing day yesterday at City of Belmont, WA running our first ever what is a podcast course.

We heard lots of stories about their experiences with Abled body people feeling sorry for them, when they want to be treated just like you would like to be treated.

We made Russell Harrower cry 😭 when he interviewed Carmel which the interview was just amazing. Her story touched all of our hearts.

“Jasmin with no e” was a title that will stay in our minds for sometime to come as Jasmin is one inspirational young lady, who is learning to drive while having an intellectual disability - we wish you all the best in getting your license you go 🚗🚗

Liam loved video games and history we can’t wait to watch your YouTube channel.

Jane she loves to talk - which makes radio a no brainer but she was so nervous to get behind the mic, we congratulate you on getting behind a mic and overcoming your fear - your a pro.

Caroline your show was called “Bashing down barriers” and yes you are smashing them and teaching everyone to not judge someone based on their disability.

Monica your story is about being a mum and carer for the brave Jasmin. The one thing I learnt is you once thought much like Russell. But we also learnt that you love your child so much that you will always fight your strong, your brave and thank you for telling a little of your story.

Paul what a team player you are indeed. You showed us something we have not seen in over 2 years of working with you. We loved your Bon Jovi idea for a show let’s talk.

We also want to thank Helen O’Sullivan from the City of Belmont WA we can clearly see that you and your city care about people with disabilities and want to give them all the opportunities, support and resources possible to follow their dream.
