2023 : it’s a wrap! Fantastic days in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference. I learned heaps as a garden variety reporter-broadcaster, including trends and techniques to incorporate at Australian Film Television and Radio School. Glad to contribute a small part to the whole event. Kudos to organisers GIJN - Global Investigative Journalism Network and partners.

Here is Stan Grant’s statement as he finished Q&A, before he steps away from media ‘for a while’. Let’s hope it’s not too long. Let’s hope media hears his call and makes the changes so badly needed for so long.

Stan Grant makes an emotional statement at the end of Q+A, announcing he will be stepping away from media commitments following racist abuse, but confirming that he will be back stronger after a break.

This has been on my mind since Friday: journalist Stan Grant is stepping away from his profession amid disproportionate, industrial-scale public abuse for giving a valid point of view arising from his Aboriginality, when asked to do so. The hypocrisy of some media demanding ‘more points of view’ from others, then castigating them when differing views are aired; the hypocrisy of media which say they support diversity while hanging their most prominent colleagues out to dry. The low-dog bullying by every ‘ordinary citizen’ who has gleefully joined the public pile-on, often under cowardly anonymous profiles.
Stan says “Racism is violence” and I agree. No wonder he has had enough. What kind of a society are we.

Although I try to shield myself from the racist abuse I'm frequently subjected to, the fact it is out there poisons the air I breathe. Now I have had enough – so on Monday night I will present Q+A, then walk away. For how long? I don't know, writes Stan Grant.

When I joined AFTRS I expected lots of things... but a 12-day OB from the Royal Easter Show with students who've studied radio for just 5 weeks wasn't one of them 😱 Pleased to say they are smashing it! They're scaling that steep learning curve with heart and passion. Love'em. You can tune in for yourself via the iHeart Radio app from 10am-4pm, or follow them on FB. Check out their work here:

A new year, a new opportunity. Having had a lot of interaction with AFTRS over many years in broadcasting, it's excellent to finally join this vibrant team at a time of great change, in their 50th year. To find out more, get in touch. Viva la revolution!
"In 1973, Barry Jones’ opening remarks as the founding Chairman of AFTRS Council declared, ‘The School must act as a revolutionary force”. He went on to say... “There can be no half-measures. We must create one of the world’s great schools or we must abandon the project at once. We cannot be a hothouse for mediocrity.”

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) has announced the appointment of seven senior staff who will take up...

Brooke Boney, with a crucial question for all of us: “[W]hen a grown man can allegedly beat a black child to death and the response from law enforcers is that this child was in the “wrong place, wrong time”, while he was WALKING HOME FROM SCHOOL WITH HIS FRIENDS, then where is the right place? When is the right time?”

There’s nothing that can come from the death of Cassius Turvey that feels like justice. There’s no relief or lesson that can be taught after something so horrific.

The “random acts of kindness” posts that hit you in the feels so you share with family and friends to make their day? Please, don’t share them. They’re likely unethical: filmed and published without consent, raising profile (=making $) for someone else. As this story shows, they’re also judgy and reinforce incorrect stereotypes about who is to be pitied and who is the ‘saviour’.

A Melbourne woman says she feels "dehumanised" after she was filmed without her consent for a TikTok video that has now been viewed more than 57 million times.

For every news consumer, an important short read about the manipulation media are sometimes forced to manage. It’s why you need to do your bit by being an active, thoughtful news consumer.

It is difficult for the media to deal in fake news – but the Andrews conspiracy story has been handled very well.
