White Horses

White Horses A beautifully crafted, premium quarterly publication inspired by the ocean, creativity and adventure. "White Horses is a beautifully crafted magazine.

A high-end quarterly publication with an enraptured & affluent coastal-living audience. More book than magazine, more literature than journalism, more art than design; a quarterly escape from your digital screen. Its quality on all levels surpasses everything else in publishing today”. This image of Pipeline announced the start of the Pacific issue (Issue 17). It’s exceptional not because of the light illuminating the barrel nor spectacularly heaving section. This shot is special because it reveals why Pipe is such an intimidating wave. That mound of water behind the wave, to the right of the shot reveals why Pipe has the power to break you. There is so much water coming behind that menacing lip, that the initial explosion of white water is just the start.
Issue 17 is a tightly held collectable which featured the now iconic shot of Eddie Aikau dropping in at Waimea.

A curious eye. Perhaps that what distinguishes White Horses from mainstream surf media. We’ve always been attracted to the atypical This is Stephanie Gilmore exiting the barrel - after the peak moment - but it bristles with stoke and so it made the cover of Issue 10, now long sold out and a rare find for the collectors.
Shot by Richard Kotch it was republished in our farewell issue.

Issue five was the first and last issue that had a two covers. The first cover was a surf shot of Fergal Smith in Ireland taken by Grant Ellis. The second cover was by Ian Regnard featuring a naked model enveloped by two stingrays. The double cover strategy resulted in no increase in sales and so we never did it again. The most astute collectors have 48 copies of the 47-issue collection.
The stingray cover was republished in Issue 47 alongside an image by Steen Barnes of a perfect unnamed peak. We also republished Mark Richards’ acceptance speech after being awarded Australia’s Most Influential Surfer.
Issue 47 is a final and heartfelt celebration of 11 years of publication. If you don’t have a copy of Issue 47 you can still buy it direct via the link in bio.

In the final issue of White Horses we celebrate the full collection. This image by Arlene Bax of two frothing Vanuatu shredders, featured in Issue 32. It was a special issue filled with nuggets of wisdom and reflections as suggested by a bevy of Horsies friends. We published two issues of this ilk (Issues 28 and 32) and while we generally aim to surprise and delight, these issues elicited a little more surprise than delight. Yet they both sold really well. You’d be lucky to own a copy of Issue 28 but there’s a handful of Issue 32 still in stock.

The image features in Issue 47 as well as Issue 26, a special themed issue titled Ohana, which in Hawaii, means family.

In the final issue of White Horses we resurrect our favourite stories from the past 47 issues. This image features in Issue 9, a special themed issue about the equinox – where day and night are perfectly balanced. For this issue we rallied 103 contributors from 18 countries to capture special moments over a 100-hour period. It was a logistical nightmare but well worth the effort. Just a few copies of the Equinox Issue are in stock. Shop online but be sure to check our bundle offers.

If you don’t have this one…

Issue 40 marks the completion of our tenth year of publication. In it, Astronaut Christina Koch shares her collection of surf shots captured from a space capsule while orbiting Earth; we unravel the story behind the mythical Aussie Rock which is located on the Transkei coast in South Africa; and present a series of surf fiction by some fine storytellers.

If you don’t have this issue, grab one and indulge yourself, because good magazines are beautiful things.

Get Issue 40 for $24.95 plus shipping
or as part of a 3 issue bundle for $40 including shipping.

We've received a ton of messages from people wanting more of White Horses in 2024 and beyond. It's gratifying to know there's such a strong following out there, but for now this is our best suggestion:

Consider buying the issues you’ve missed out on. Since White Horses has been designed to be timeless, you’ll find Issue 1 to be as compelling as issue 47, so if you’re wanting to continue your relationship with White Horses, consider jumping across to our website shop (Under “Shop”, click “Single Issues”) and buy a couple of past issues you may not have seen. Some issues are sold out but there are some issues still in stock.
There has been a surge of back issue orders since January 2024 as collectors try to complete their collection and non collectors buy issues they have missed, so stocks are being depleted - get in there quick.

In Issue 36, we got a glimpse into the life of Wayne Wi******er - The Restorer. Wayne lives in WA, down Denmark way, and has since opened a surf gallery which has become a must-see for surfers passing through the area. This is Wayne’s mate Kev who was around when The Restorer feature was being curated. Kev was the official sand-dune-climbing-mobile-phone-signal-finding guy helping to transmit images of Wayne’s restored surfboards from the remote South West to our editorial office. Kev was recently at The Surf Gallery visiting his old mate. Of course, he couldn’t resist a shot Kev flipping through the new issue of White Horses (Issue 47) in his White Horses tee shirt.

This is the last post promoting our current issue (Issue 46) because it will be replaced in exactly one week with Issue 47. Here we honour Burleigh legend, the late Vaughan Thompson through an issue dedicated the life’s work of photographic legend Andrew Shield.
Says Shieldsy of this slide film shot: “This shows how blue the water gets after a long time with no rain. This was taken not too long before Vaughan tragically passed away in an accident. I know Vaughan and Bottle’s folks well and they’re just great people. Koala Park’s finest”.

Only a couple of weeks left till Chrissy so check our Christmas Bundle offers too.

Our Story

WHAT IS WHITE HORSES?

White Horses is an original and authentic quarterly publication about the surf, ocean, creativity and adventure, and delivers a worthy and highly acclaimed alternative to existing surf mags. If you get equally, if not more excited by the glimpse of a clean, empty beach-break peak through some foreshore trees, than you do witnessing a million air reverses on a comp webcast, then there's every chance White Horses is for you.

WHAT ABOUT AQUALUNA MEDIA?

We are a small privately-owned media company, publishing a unique, progressive and globally recognised magazine title White Horses.
