The future of journalism is independent.

I became a journalist because I loved talking about news. Living with my grandmother in Perth, I’d wake up and devour the newspaper and then talk about it with her until she had had enough.

When I got my first taste of working in a newsroom, I could not get enough of it. The atmosphere and the excitement when news breaks, the buzz as new developments unfold and the story goes to air - was intoxicating. It was where I wanted to be all the time. I was happy to work unpaid overtime because there was nowhere I would rather be.

Unfortunately, the news is not what it was. I’m sure there are some small pockets of the old school excitement holding out as the world changes, but, as the attached story says, the days of the old fashioned newsroom are numbered.

While the legacy media flounders for relevance, a new breed of independent journalists is emerging. They don’t care about the 24-hour news cycle or getting an identical story to air one and a half minutes before the competition. They only care about getting it right and telling the whole story.
