Gneiss Design A creative spark for still and moving graphics. Celebrating stories through film & design.

What a team of superb creative talents we have working on 21 Hearts: Vivian Bullwinkel and the Nurses of the Vyner Brooke.

They expertly bring together the elements of (L-R) Lighting Design (Rowan van Blomestein), AV design (Josephine Hayes – Gneiss Design), Music Direction (Craig Skelton), Movement Direction (Rachael Bott) and Sound Design (Ben Collins) to evoke 1942 Singapore and the events on Bangka Island and in the POW camps.

We also enter the various dream states of Vivian Bullwinkel’s life as she calls to mind the memory and spirits of her friends who didn’t survive the war, and whose sacrifice drove her illustrious career that was committed to their memory.

Richly textured, evocative and deeply moving, this team has perfectly captured the essence of Jenny Davis’ superb, powerful and nuanced script, directed with such sensitivity by Stuart Halusz.

Warp and weft and gentle blurs, singing tones of ocean blues, shadowed clouds and sharp sun's sparkles, a Beetle's case of bronze and lines, blooms of ink and jungle palms...all among the inspirations behind visual design and production throughout Theatre 180's '21 Hearts'.

This brave true story is brought to light with beauty, by a brilliant cast and crew. Launching this week to full audiences at the awesome art deco theatre, Cygnet Como. There's a return season in October/November.

There is so much to learn from the forest, and from Fungi expert Katrina Syme. Read more about her fascination with Fungi, her beautiful botanical artworks and studies of new specimens - here in Gondwana Link’s rich library of habitat and hope, and also published in Southerly Magazine's October edition. It has been a treasured experience working together to bring Fungi to the fore with these stories.

The Lighthouse Girl Saga is a sweeping story of ordinary people living in extraordinary times: a tale of courage, resilience, hope and love.

A bold adaptation by two of WA’s leading and award-winning playwrights, Jenny Davis OAM and Hellie Turner, this epic production blends four award-winning novels by West Australian writer, Dianne Wolfer: Lighthouse Girl, Light Horse Boy, In the Lamplight and The Last Light Horse into the most compelling theatrical event of our times.

Striking visuals, evocative sound and innovative staging transports the audience with the First AIF convoy as it embarks from King George sound and farewells Australia from the beacon of the lighthouse at Breaksea Island, to the hell of Gallipoli, the mud in the trenches at the Western Front, a nurse’s compassion in rural England and peaceful horizons in country Victoria. Journey with Fay, Charlie, Jim, Rose and Sandy, the only warhorse to return to Australia of the 136,000 sent to war, across seas and through the mire of war as their intersecting stories culminate in the forging of the ANZAC spirit and a love that conquers all.

What an adventure it was to film The Stars Descend by Annette Carmichael Projects - one big story of hope and connection, composed of five beautiful, responsive live dance events - each performed outdoors, across magnificent environments within the Gondwana Link.

It has been wonderful to review and edit footage of the events, which I've composed into a short Highlight Reel. Watch this film for a taste of The Stars Descend:

It is so very fantastic to see Theatre 180's production of A Fortunate Life travelling far and wide, and especially, reaching so many regional audiences. This breakthrough production was rich with creativity and heart from the outset - working as audiovisual designer with Theatre 180 to bring A.B Facey's autobiography to life through stage and screen has been a treasure. Behind the scenes at Annette Carmichael Projects’ The Stars Descend: Chapter 3, Porongurup, it has been very beautiful to see people’s connection with their environment, their care towards each other and their surroundings.
There’s a great generosity of spirit running through this performance, with a committed community of movers, a dedicated local producer, and careful, powerful work from choreographer Sonya Stephen, connected to storyful sound from Andy O’Neil, star dancers and a distributed team of artists living throughout Western Australia.
The Stars Descend: Chapter 3, Porongurup is the third sold out performance in a series of five chapters, taking place this Friday 24th March. Get tickets to Chapter 4: Fitzgerald Biosphere, and Chapter 5: Garlgula / Karlkurla / Kalgoorlie, here: heartlandjourneys.com.au/the-stars-descend/

THEATRE 180 recognises the strength, resilience and courage of women through many of our productions, whether existing plays such as AIRSWIMMING by Charlotte Jones (women who were institutionalised after being forced to give up unplanned births for adoption) and THE GREATEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD by John Bishop (trailblazing educator Maria Montessori), or new works which commemorate the lives and achievements of Australians, such as our play, 21 HEARTS: THE VIVIAN BULLWINKEL STORY, by Jenny Davis OAM, which highlights the amazing women of the Australian Army who served during WWII.

Staying until the last minute to nurse the wounded, Sister Bullwinkel was among 65 nurses who escaped the fall of Singapore on the Vyner Brooke. Bombed by the Japanese, many were killed, drowned or lost at sea. Some were captured as POW’s in camps, and 21 were massacred on the beach at Bangka Island, with Vivian the sole survivor. After the war, Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel, AO, MBE, ARRC, ED and Lieutenant Betty Jeffrey OAM campaigned to tell the world of their story and ensure their sacrifice was never forgotten.

Today, on International Women's Day, we acknowledge and celebrate women everywhere and support equality in all its splendour, towards a better world.

I’m feeling pretty darn excited for ‘The Lighthouse Girl Saga’ to journey to audiences far and wide - it’s so very full of adventure and love, with connected personal stories and universal themes running all the way through.
It has been a pleasure to be Visual Designer, and to work together to create and combine a rich palette of visual content - with evocative soundscapes and excellent stagecraft.
In The Lighthouse Girl Saga, real life events and beautiful ideas move strong through careful research and development, carrying right through to live amongst the audiences.
This show is full of wonderful words written and honed. On stage, the incredible performances of the actors and their clever costumes and props are coupled with powerful audio and visuals, held strong by the ever-so careful attention of dedicated live production crew.
Here are some special pics from the opening night of The Lighthouse Girl Saga - I was chuffed and rather emotional over the launch of this wonderful production..! So many lovely people.
Be sure to get your tickets for the next round of performances, at Orana Cinemas Busselton.
