Some interesting news from Castlemaine - The hot rod sign at the north end of town has disappeared!
Erected in the early '80s, this iconic Castlemaine landmark is one of four signs welcoming travellers to Castlemaine and proclaiming the town as The Street Rod Centre of Australia.
Don't worry, it hasn't been stolen. It's in safe hands and after a freshen up, it will hopefully be installed at a new location, let me explain.
Last year we were informed the sign would need to be relocated in the near future because the land the sign is on would be getting redeveloped soon. Last Monday I drove by the sign and saw that it had been vandalised, pretty devastating for me personally because it features two hot rods that my late father, Larry O'Toole built and that our family still own and drive as often as we can. This sign has been up longer than I've been here and to my knowledge, had never been vandalised. It was heartbreaking to see.
I wasn't having it though, so returned the next day and spent about five hours cleaning off the graffiti. I had to laugh at the irony of this situation, but by the time I finished, I decided we may as well get the sign down ASAP, I didn't want it to happen again.
Two days later, a good mate helped me take the sign down and remove the frame and support legs. It is now in storage with the original version of this sign that also features one of dad's hot rods. We have a new location for the sign in mind, now it's a matter of going through whatever process is needed to get it reinstalled.
We'll post an update when there's news, in the meantime we'd love to see your photos of cool cars parked in front of these iconic signs! Cheers, Al O'Toole.
