Founding member of prog rock band Supertramp, Rick Davies, passed away this week. Davies was its only constant member, and composed some of the band's best-known songs, including "Rudy", "Bloody Well Right", "Crime of the Century" among many others.

Today marks the 70th birthday of drummer, Rob Hirst. His first band in school days was Schwampy Moose, which morphed into Farm. By the time he was at uni he recruited some new musicians and the lineup eventually became Midnight Oil.
He has also been an integral part of the bands The Backsliders, Ghostwriters and The Break.

A favourite artist of mine, Tommy Bolin, was born this day in 1951. He played guitar in the bands Zephyr, The James Gang and Deep Purple, as well as doing a bunch of session work and a couple of solo records. The album “Private Eyes” is a blast!
Unfortunately Bolin died way too young, at the age of 25.

Bela Fleck celebrates his 67th birthday today. An acclaimed virtuoso, he is an innovative and technically proficient pioneer and ambassador of the banjo, playing music from bluegrass, jazz, classical, rock and various world music genres.
He once said in an interview that if you are putting together an instrumental band you have to surround yourself with the best musicians. I think he accomplishes that!
