It’s not Kathmandu jacket wearing weather yet, but we have a rare opportunity today to rock up to the local footy in shorts and thongs, so load up at on the cans at bar but have a salad roll to balance it out. Toot your car horns and bang the fence at every goal and remember to ask the goal umpires “How bigs ya dick?” REAL FOOTY is back today!

As each week passes and the closer we are getting to the start of the new local footy season, I’m seeing more and more club posts this sort of the stuff. It’s now a serious reality that’s hitting the wider AFL Victoria area. Clubs aren’t just losing players, but future volunteers, future board members, future players (their kids). It can be helped - but things need to go back to basics and local footy needs to not be compared to AFL.

The Terang Kolora Noorat Mortlake Football Netball Club would have to be one of the longest names in local footy right? Jokes aside - this is the beginning of many conversations between clubs across many leagues in Victoria about mergers. Sadly it’s reality. Is it a bad thing? Short term yes, long term it could be a good thing.

RIP Murph
One of the great things about broadcasting local footy is the absolute legends you meet and become friends with. Kevin Murphy (KFM or Murph) was one truely amazing volunteer for the Lorne Dolphins. Before any Lorne broadcast Murph would come up to the broadcast box with the team sheets, his thoughts on the game and brag about how good his lines were he did on the footy oval. He became great friends with myself and the CDFNL LIVE call team.

We head to Lorne this Saturday for their annual Easter Saturday clash and its just not going to be the same - but no doubt he will be listening, he always did and every Saturday Night he’d message me telling me what a fantastic call it was. I’m going miss him.
RIP KFM you absolute legend.

AFL Barwon, Geelong Umpires and Colac Umpires are facing a shortage of umpires in 2022, could you please help us contact those that may be interested in taking up a role in umpiring?

• Field 14yo or above

• Boundary/Goal 12yo or above

• Family Members, friends, players, coaches – anyone who wants to give umpiring a go!

• Play one day….umpire the next or vice-versa!

• Get Paid, Get Fit, Get Moving!

They conduct umpire training in Geelong (Kardinia Park) Monday/Wednesday from 4.30pm & 5.30pm and Colac (Lake Oval) Wednesday from 5.30pm

All persons aged 18 or above MUST obtain or currently have a valid WWC Victoria (volunteer) click here to apply for a Victorian WWC.

Free registration, free accreditation

All registered umpires are PAID For League Appointed games, when appointed by AFL Barwon ($25-153/game pending umpiring role)

*Receive Colac and Geelong Umpire association benefits by becoming a member (membership fee applies)

We ask if you can, that you place these posters prominently on your websites and social media pages and clubrooms.

The biggest thing Umpiring misses out on in recruiting is NOT being asked ARE YOU INTERESTED IN UMPIRING?

Asking this simple question, provokes thought and discussion with people who may not have shown interest or have had an interest but weren’t wanting to ask?

We find that by promoting Umpiring in your club…helps make umpiring a part of your club, improving how people interact and include those that umpire as a valuable and appreciated person within the club, improves match day environments in a supportive way, bringing more people to come and watch and enjoy their experience at your club, retains umpires across the Region as their experience is enhanced by that club support – irrespective of right or wrong decisions!

If you wish for myself to come and speak to your boards or members on how you can be part of the umpiring journey, then please contact me and we can get started!

• Club based umpire academies – grow and support people within the club to be umpires and in turn future proof umpiring for years to come

• Reserve Grade Umpiring – Stronger support for those who umpire reserve and other grades where AFL Barwon have a shortage of League Umpires to appoint

• Be recognised through AFL platforms of your support to umpiring by ensuring all who umpire at any level within the club are registered and accredited in Officials HQ the National AFL Umpire data Base

So, I don’t confuse you with “interested/enquiry” information to promote umpiring as above –

I will send an updated Officials HQ umpire registration link and QR code to you separate to this email on Thursday – that Officials HQ regstration link will be mandatory for all Club reserves and lower grade umpires, it is how they can access the Umpire Accreditation (Learning Management System - LMS) All persons umpiring MUST at a minimum complete the introductory course which includes a Child and Young Person Safety module, before they umpire any competition games of football.
