I loved working on this issue of UNITE with my Uniting Communities team. So many good stories in this issue and I loved working with the Family by Family program to capture this perfect image of little Sumu for the front cover!

We’re SO excited to share our spring edition of UNITE with you! 💚🌼

In this edition, we celebrate the remarkable stories and bold ideas that shape our community.

Stories like Sumu’s (pictured) are a testament to the power of connection, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of the people we serve.

But our work is only possible thanks to the support of people like you. You make a tangible difference, whether it's through:
📢 championing our programs
🙌 volunteering your time
🫶 or providing financial support.

Together we are building stronger, more inclusive communities where everyone can grow and thrive. 🌱

The first months of the war were a blur. I remember trying to find information, barely sleeping, and constantly scanning the news to understand what was happening, moment by moment, in the country I had called home for the previous five years. Mostly, I was thinking about all my friends who still live there. After about a month, I made my way back to , meeting, listening to and sharing Ukrainian stories as I travelled through Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Romania, before finally returning to my old home.

I remember sitting down with Anastacia in . Her life hadn’t just been turned upside down - it had been twisted, bent, and shattered beyond recognition. As we talked, the depth of her pain was palpable. "I'm from . My Kherson," she began, her voice already breaking with the memories of home. She told me about that terrifying morning when her daughter woke them up, frightened. Looking out the window of their high-rise apartment, watching in disbelief as a fireball towered over their building, roaring into the sky. Their lives were reduced to a single suitcase as they left, tearful goodbyes with their parents and their beloved dog, with no idea what the next day would bring.

At the time, none of us knew what the future held. Would Kherson survive? Would her family be safe? So much was unknown.

Now, years later, I can't help but think of all the people still making these impossible choices - just like Anastasia did. In May, I was meeting families in , , and who were leading difficult yet somewhat ordinary lives. Today, their homes are the frontline and they’re being evacuated, forced to leave everything behind. Life has changed forever for them.

As I rewatch Anastasia’s story, I feel the weight of those conversations all over again. These aren't just stories of survival; they are stories of unfathomable choices, strength, loss, and resilience.

I hope you watch this interview, and as you do, think about the people fleeing their homes right now. Think about the evacuation teams risking everything to save lives of strangers. Think about the soldiers, often exhausted and afraid, fighting with everything they have to protect their families, their homeland, and their future.

This war isn’t over, and neither is the courage of the Ukrainian people. Together, we must continue to stand with them.

This week marks the beginning of a new school year in Ukraine - a day that should be filled with excitement, joy, and the buzz of children reuniting with friends. But this year, once again, the joy is marred by the grim reality of war. Across the country, what should be a celebration is instead a day of anxiety and uncertainty, as Russian attacks continue to disrupt the simple pleasure and routine of returning to school.

I remember so vividly my daughters’ first day at school in Ternopil. The First Bell ceremonies, the nervous smiles, the excitement as they met new classmates and reunited with old friends. Those moments were filled with the purest of emotions—joy, anticipation, and a little bit of those first-day nerves!

When we visited their school back in May, we were taken on a tour by Hazel’s teacher. A few things really struck me. What was once a dingy basement had been transformed into a bomb shelter - cold, dark, but necessary. As much as a fresh coat of paint and some murals on the wall hope to make the space friendlier, there is no missing that this is first and foremost a bomb shelter. But what really hit hard is the poster honoring the parents who are fighting on the frontlines, far from their children and homes. The juxtaposition of a school with the bright, hopeful faces of children and the stark reminders of war - left a lasting impact on me.

This year, children in Ukraine start another interrupted school year, where learning happens in bursts, overshadowed by the threat of air raids and the ever-present fear of another attack. Schools, parents, and children have adapted to this “new normal,” but there’s nothing normal about it. A generation of children is growing up in the shadow of war, forced to adapt daily to circumstances that no child should ever face.

These children, their teachers, and their families continue to push forward, to learn, to grow, despite the unimaginable challenges they face. We must not forget what is happening in Ukraine.

I’ve always been more comfortable behind the camera, capturing the stories of others, rather than sharing my own. Promoting myself has never come easy; I’ve always preferred the quiet, unseen moments behind the lens to the spotlight. But today, I’m stepping a little outside my comfort zone to share something I’m incredibly proud of.

After lots of hard work, I’m excited to announce the relaunch of my website: www.ryancarterimages.com. This site is more than just a portfolio - it’s a reflection of my journey, the stories I’ve been privileged to capture, and the remarkable individuals and communities that have touched my heart along the way.

While I often struggle to talk about myself, I absolutely love to talk about the people, places, and causes I work with. From the bustling markets of Kinshasa, frontline villages in Ukraine, to the remote villages high in the Himalayas, I’ve been blessed to witness inspiring resilience, hope, and the indomitable human spirit. Each image is a piece of a larger narrative, and I’m honored to share these stories with you.

Promoting myself may not come naturally, but promoting the work I get to do - the images I’m so proud to create alongside those who inspire me - is a joy. I hope you’ll take a moment to visit the new site, explore these stories, and perhaps get a glimpse of the world as I see it through my camera.

In a world that often rushes past, I have found a simple question "Tell me about your life" - holds the power to transform our understanding and relationships.

As a storyteller, I’ve learned that true connection comes not from preconceived notions, but from genuinely listening to the stories of those I meet. Whether it’s sharing a meal with shepherds in the remote Caucasus Mountains or hearing the struggles and triumphs of people from all walks of life, these authentic exchanges have enriched my perspective in profound ways.

Have a read as I explore how asking this one question has, and will continue to, open doors to deeper connections and a more meaningful understanding of the world around us.

As the plans come together for my trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo in November, I’m filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the incredible people I’ve met in my previous travels to this unforgettable country. As I looked through these portraits, I distinctly remember each face and the stories of strength, resilience, and beauty that they represent.

Bringing greater awareness to the hopes and struggles of this place through the individual stories of its people has become a central part of my journey. From the vibrant streets and schools of Kinshasa to the remote villages in the east, the DRC has left a profound mark on my heart. The warmth and hospitality of the Congolese people, even in the face of adversity, continues to inspire me deeply.

I’m excited to return to DRC this November. I look forward to reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and continuing to document the stories that so desperately need to be shared with the world. This is a small celebration of a few of the amazing people I’ve been privileged to meet and the beautiful memories we’ve created together.

Thank you, DRC, for welcoming me into your lives and allowing me to share in your journey. Here’s to more adventures, more stories, and more opportunities to highlight the heart and soul of this incredible nation. If your organization needs quality content from DRC, I would love to see how we can collaborate and fit you into my schedule while I’m there. Together, we can shine a light on the resilience and hope that define the Congolese spirit. See you soon! 🇨🇩

Each portrait tells a story of hope, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of the Congolese people. As I prepare for my next trip to DRC, I’m reminded of th...

Before Medair arrived in this community in Mutumbi DRC, healthcare was a distant and often unattainable dream. Francine and her neighbors had to travel far, only to face medical bills they could scarcely afford. But now, because of the work that Medair is doing, this clinic provides life-saving care free of charge.

As Francine gently nursed her baby, she shared with me, "I am very grateful that I can receive free and good healthcare here from this centre and Medair. Thank you Medair, and please keep helping our community!"

This is the profound impact that accessible healthcare can have on a community and the incredible difference that Medair has in the communities they serve.

I love using photography to support the incredible work of humanitarian organizations around the world. I'm a day late for both of these, but in celebration of World Humanitarian Day and World Photography Day, I want to reflect on the powerful stories I've been privileged to capture and share.

Each of these photos represents not just a moment in time, but the dedication, resilience, and hope of individuals who inspire me every single day. I've had the honor of documenting the incredible impact of organizations working in some of the world’s most challenging environments. Here’s a glimpse of where my journey has taken me:

Photo 1. Extending Hope- Malawi
Photo 2. Global Health Outreach - Ukraine
Photo 3. Impact Africa Inc. - South Africa
Photo 4. DINADI - Nepal
Photo 5. ACS InternationalSchools - Papua New Guinea
Photo 6. Medair - Democratic Republic of Congo
Photo 7. Malembe Rise - Democratic Republic of Congo
Photo 8. Hoffnung - Romania
Photo 9. Uncommon Way - Nepal
Photo 10. Children New Generation - Ukraine

Photography has the unique ability to convey emotions and stories that words sometimes can’t fully capture. Through my work, I strive to shine a light on the perseverance of these communities and the organizations that stand with them. It’s a privilege to be able to use my vocation to amplify these voices and to share their stories with the world.

Every story I tell is an opportunity to connect with people, to understand their challenges, and to celebrate their triumphs. These organizations are doing extraordinary work, and I’m grateful to play a small part in telling their stories.

Let’s continue to support and celebrate the unsung heroes working tirelessly to make this world a better place.

Isn’t it amazing how life aligns your path without you even realizing it? When I joined as their Communications Coordinator earlier this year, I hadn't fully grasped just how deeply their value - bold, genuine, and kind - would resonate with my own approach to storytelling, honed over 15 years.

In all my travels and in every face I’ve captured, these values have been at the heart of my storytelling. Taking a portrait like this one at Sunrise Bethel School for ACS International in Port Moresby isn’t just about creating an image - it’s about having the boldness to be there, to engage with people whose lives can often be quite challenging.

But more than that, it’s about being genuine and kind in every single interaction. To truly capture a moment that feels real and tells a deeper story, you have to connect with the person, listen to them, and approach them with empathy. That’s the only way to create a photograph that isn’t just an image, but a story - one that speaks of the essence of the person in front of the lens.

What’s been truly beautiful is working alongside a team at Uniting Communities who have been living and breathing these values long before I arrived. Their commitment to bold, genuine, and kind doesn’t just guide their work; it defines the environment we work in every day. Seeing these values in action within our team only reinforces how well aligned this role is with my own approach as a freelance storyteller, and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead!

As you scroll through images, what catches your eye?

Is it the aesthetic, the story behind the photo, or something else? What moves you to stop and look, leave a comment or engage with a post? I’m genuinely curious and would love to hear your thoughts. Let's start a discussion and see what we can learn from each other! Thank you for your input 👇

I met this new friend while visiting a temple in Kathmandu. Despite the temple's magnificence, meeting and photographing him was the highlight of my visit. He had a little table on the temple steps, selling knick-knacks and souvenirs. With his engaging smile and ability to speak enough of 8 languages, he could charm any tourist passing by. He was hilariously funny and one of the many wonderful souls that make these journeys unforgettable!

It was late 2022 when I last visited DR Congo, and I can't wait to reconnect with Sarah, Dr. Jerry, Brad, and the rest of the team in November. One of the highlights of my job is working with ongoing projects, building relationships and getting to revisit with people over time. Seeing the progress, hearing updates, and continuing stories is precious. Faces like this adorable one will have changed immensely in the past two years, and I can't wait to see them again!

I'll be hitting the ground in mid-November, so stay tuned for updates, stories, and more beautiful photos of these absolutely remarkable children!

In Ukrainian, the word for "region" sounds a lot like my name, Ryan. So when I see the sign "наш район," which means "our region," I like to think the more accurate translation should be "Our Ryan" - my own personal greeting everywhere I visit. 😁

Over the years, I have developed a deep connection with the people and places of . It has become a second home, filled with incredible people, memories, and stories.

From capturing the spirit of local communities to witnessing the strength of individuals in the face of adversity, every moment here has enriched my life and work. This photo will always remind me of the beautiful intersections of language, culture, and the simple joys of exploration.

What do you see in the eyes of this child?

A story we have yet to hear. Is it one of struggle? Hope? Survival? Resilience? Too often, we overlook the silent voices of those without agency and their stories go unheard.

What will it take for us to truly listen?

It's time to amplify these voices. To bring their stories into the light. How can we be the voice for those who have none?

While on assignment with Women for Women International in the DRC, I had the privilege of capturing Nankafu's inspiring story. After suffering several miscarriages, Nankafu was forced from her home and divorced by her husband. Yet, she refused to let these challenges define her future.

Nankafu joined the Women for Women program, where she gained the skills to start her own brick-making business. Brick-making in the DRC is arduous and time-consuming: sourcing the clay, molding each brick by hand, and drying them under the hot sun. Despite these challenges, women in this field can earn between $1 to $3 per day. This income, while modest, provides essential financial independence and supports their families.

Nankafu's journey has been difficult, but she says her life is better now; she eats well and is healthy. With knowledge from the program, she challenged her husband in court. "Thanks to the lessons I learned on women's rights, I decided to lodge a complaint against my husband, who had abandoned me with the children. The court decided that my husband was to give me the house he drove me out of, and that he and his new wife were to live elsewhere. So, with my children, I went back to our house and have made some improvements to the structure with my new knowledge in brick-making," Nankafu says.

The pride Nankafu takes in her work is evident in her smile and the care she puts into every brick. Stories like hers highlight the beauty, strength, and potential of the Congolese people. Support incredible women like Nankafu by connecting with Women for Women International today!

Is there a bigger contradiction than this?

This once-peaceful residential apartment building on the outskirts of Kharkiv was reduced to rubble early in the Russian invasion. The hand-painted sign reads, "Russia - terrorists."

It's hard to reconcile this image with the fact that Russia has now assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council. It sounds like a cruel joke, but it's our unfortunate reality. The very nation responsible for so much terror and devastation is now presiding over the body tasked with maintaining international peace and security.

Myself, I've been a witness to this destruction first hand, and talked to many people directly impacted by this war. My thoughts on this are clear.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Please share them below! ⬇️

I have great memories working with Dinadi in . This was in a gorgeous forest on the outskirts of Kathmandu, amongst towering trees and verdant grass. It was quite a challenge to create a northern European-inspired winter collection in the midst of Nepal’s heat and humidity! I'm thankful to , our wonderful model, who brought grace and poise throughout the days of shooting, showcasing this exquisite scarf with such .

Dinadi’s commitment to women through fair and employment is inspiring. Each piece they create, like the scarf in this image, is a masterpiece—dedicated to quality, ethical practices, and the rich tradition of hand-knitting.

Collaborating with the team is always an enriching experience, blending the simplicity of design with the vibrant culture of Nepal.

I love my job!

It's more than just taking pictures; it's freezing individual moments in time and preserving emotions that might otherwise be fleeting. Each face I photograph tells a unique story, and I strive to share these stories with the world. Whether it's in the bustling streets of a thriving city, the serene landscapes of remote villages, or amidst the chaos of life, the faces I capture are a story of the diversity and beauty of humanity.

It's these life-affirming stories and connections that make my job so fulfilling. Every image is a reminder of the incredible people I meet and the breathtaking places I am lucky to venture to. Here's to the wonder in photography and the endless stories waiting to be told.

There's something incredibly beautiful about a child's innate drive to reach for their dreams. It's a beautiful reminder of the boundless potential we all hold within us.

It''s our privilege and responsibility to nurture this spirit. We have the opportunity to encourage our young ones to chase their goals with courage, strength, and unwavering determination.

Imagine a world where every child feels empowered to dream big and pursue those dreams fearlessly. Together, we can help shape a future full of hope, endless possibilities, and remarkable achievements. Let's support and uplift our children, ensuring they know that no dream is too big and no goal is out of reach.
