Over 120 people were at Readings Carlton on 3 October to celebrate the launch of Matthew Hooper’s evocative debut novel A Cold Season. Matthew was in conversation with celebrated author Antoni Jach.
At the launch Matthew said ‘The book is called A Cold Season because I wanted to indicate that grief and sadness can last only a season. I mean this metaphorically. It could be a year. It could be ten years. When a season passes the grief can lessen. Of course, I recognise that with some losses we never get better but I wanted to mark it as a possibility. I also wanted to make reference to the winter, which acts like a character in the book.’
There was much love for Matthew in the room and he ended up signing a massive 80 books on the evening

At Readings Carlton on Thursday 7 March Extinction Rebellion rewilded the footpath to celebrate the launch of Donna M Cameron’s The Rewilding. In an associated media release XR ‘applauded the emergence of writing in Australia that is clear-sighted about climate breakdown while telling rich and evocative stories that help us understand what it's like to be living in a time of unprecedented and growing crisis.’ Inside the store award-winning author Lucy Treloar expertly interviewed Donna about her amazing new novel, a breathless chase thriller that explores the rollercoaster relationship between a radical climate activist and a corporate whistleblower, both of whom are on the run.

Congratulations from all at Transit Lounge to Subhash Jaireth on Spinoza's Overcoat winning the ACT Book of the Year this evening. We are thrilled!

Jaireth wins ACT Book of the Year
30 September 2022
Canberra writer Subhash Jaireth has won the 2021 ACT Book of the Year for his essay collection Spinoza’s Overcoat: Travels with writers and poets (Transit Lounge).
Chosen from a shortlist of six, Jaireth receives $10,000 for his winning book, which explores the lives and travels of writers and poets including Franz Kafka, Mikhail Bulgakov and Paul Celan.
The award’s judges also named two highly commended entries: nonfiction book Oil Under Troubled Water: Australia’s Timor Sea intrigue (Bernard Collaery, MUP) and poetry collection Doggerland (Moya Pacey, Recent Work Press). Each highly commended book is awarded $2000, while the remaining shortlisted authors receive $1000.
Presented by the ACT government, the ACT Book of the Year aims to support the development of ACT-based writers, promote writing in the territory and contribute to a positive writing culture. The winner of last year’s award was Lisa Fuller for her debut YA novel Ghost Bird (UQP).

We are delighted to announce the winner of the 2022 Barbara Jefferis Award is S.L. Lim for their novel, Revenge: Murder in Three Parts!

The judges said, ‘In choosing Revenge as our winner, we firstly discussed the almost painful sympathy we felt for the protagonist, Yannie. While other books on our shortlist were also emotionally involving, particularly the books by Down, Janson, and Wyld, we felt that Revenge edged ahead of these due to the freshness of its setting and the relevance of its message to everyone. None of us could recall reading a recent novel set in Malaysia, despite its proximity to Australia, nor one dealing with the ingrained sexism that robs girls and women of the chance to live a full life.

We admired Lim’s clear eye in addressing the internalised misogyny of their women characters and the agony of Yannie’s desires in a homophobic society. Revenge could be read as a revenge fantasy, and while this view is cathartic, it’s not just about one woman and her story.

Our deciding factor was the incredible way that Lim addresses the complex structural and cultural dynamics that prevented Yannie having agency over her own life. Revenge answers those people who say: why didn’t she just? Why didn’t she just leave, why didn’t she just say no, why didn’t she just do it anyway? Because Yannie loves the people who oppress her more than she loves herself, because of the messages she’s received since she was born.'
