I remember this song being a big hit, including the wedding dance floors,

Get the funk up: Prince’s ‘Batdance’ was first released 35 years ago today. Batmania ‘89 was now in full swing.

The single was a very big deal when it was originally released, not only did it revive Prince’s career, but the funky-fresh sample-heavy earworm (and accompanying music video) was placed in heavy rotation. Eerywhere. It was THE song of the summer.

It reached the Billboard Number 1 position on August 5th - in fact, the chart toppers that week in 1989 were:

1. Prince - Batdance
2. Bobby Brown - On Our Own (from Ghostbusters 2)
3. Love And Rockets - So Alive
4. Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting
5. Martika - Toy Soldiers

And coincidentally, the same week’s Billboard charts in 1984 had Prince’s ‘When Doves Cry’ in the number one position, with Ray Parker Jr.’s ‘Ghostbusters’ at number two. Spooky.
