Stoked for Carbon Creative taking out a Silver for the Acknowledgement of Country video we collaborated on at the BADC Awards on Saturday night. The video is a proud celebration of the Gubbi Gubbi, Ningyningy, Quandamooka, Yuggera and Turbal peoples, on whose lands the Dolphins home grounds are situated, and a powerful symbol of the enduring connection between the buangan (dolphins) and First Nations peoples.
Huge thanks must go to acclaimed Sunshine Coast artist Lyndon Davis, a Traditional Custodian of the Gubbi Gubbi people, who created the artwork used in the dolphins, as well as Shannon Ruska, a descendant of the Yuggera, Turbal, Nunukul, Gorenpul/ Cooperoo, and Yu gembir peoples, for his booming vocals and help in putting the video together. It was yet another really enjoyable collaboration between Carbon Creative, Fabric Films, 3P Studios and Jarsonic. Love working with this team of talented hardworking people to do great work and have fun doing it!

My first meeting with was in 2003 when I was a 20-something Clapper loader and luckily had a last-minute opportunity to work on one of his jobs because someone was sick. I was grateful as Mark’s circle was tight and trusted and I really wanted to see how the hell he did what he did. It was a Ford Ute ad and we spent two days in the dust and heat in a paddock near Brisbane with film screaming through the Arri 435 at 150 frames per second but of course every frame a keeper. The cameras got flogged - dust on everything. Dirt bikes, and cars flying sideways around the place. I couldn’t load film fast enough or be ready for the next shot quick enough. Suddenly filmmaking was an extreme sport! Heck yeah this is awesome. At the centre of the storm was this big competent slightly-scary Kiwi bloke who just calmly picked up the camera and waved it around - defying the laws of physics and filmmaking formalities he seemed to be able to create these incredible high production images so easily. At one point a car flew by and as the dust cleared we made eye contact and I said to him in my best lame Hollywood voice “Mooooorpheus!” [of the Matrix - cause he looked a bit like him and had a presence a bit like him]. I wasn’t sure if I’d gone too far and had just done my first and last job for Zoom Film & TV but thankfully that signature Mark Toia cackle came out. I think he liked that I was a bit rogue, cause he was that in spades doing everything his way, breaking every mould that got thrown at him. Mostly I think he liked that I absolutely worked my arse off for him cause he was a worker. We all wanted to please Mr T because we all looked up to him. No one had such clarity in their mind’s eye like him - [pretty bad at grammar though]. No one could pick up a camera and do what he did. And then edit like he did. And then be pretty much brilliant at every aspect of filmmaking he chose to turn his hand too. And then just make a blockbuster Hollywood movie on his own. It was outrageous how much he overachieved. If anyone could find a way to do something it was Mark. What a brain mixed with an absolutely relentless work ethic, beige cargoes, crocs and the gift of the gab. Somehow on everyone’s level from A listers to the average Joe yet also just in his own unique high functioning dimension. He went hard! Full commitment. Full throttle. Epic imagery. High speed motorbikes. Overpowered beautiful cars. Brutalist sculptures. Helicopters. Techonolgy. Embracing the future. Nothing could stop him. But sadly something has. Farewell Mr T. Blessed our paths crossed. You left a hell of an impression on everyone you were around. You kept us on our toes but made us feel alive and motivated to try and keep up. I know Mark wouldn’t have achieved what he did without Carolyn. Thoughts to her and the family. He has left a legacy and I hope the kids are able to embrace his spirit and achieve their own goals and dreams.
