Geelan Media
Ashley Geelan has a lifetime passion for writing, researching, literature, politics, issues, photography, media, radio, technology and computers since a young boy.
At 10-years of-age (1988), he created his own newspaper The Geelan Globe which was produced on a mechanical typewriter using The Lettering Book for masthead and headlines et al.
The Geelan Globe was then photocopied at the Diamond Valley Library and distributed via his morning paper round to letterboxes around St Helena, Eltham, Eltham North and Greensborough, before school inside The Sun, The Age & The Australian.
The "company" name "Geelan Media" begins.
At 14 years-of-age, he went digital to produce 11 issues of VicNews between 1992-1997 using an Amiga 2000 computer and dot-matrix printer, even obtaining an ISSN [1038-6971].
At 16-years-of-age (1994) he commenced work experience with Leader Newspapers Northcote. (541 High St, Northcote). The Editor wrote on his work experience report that Geelan had "Enthusiasm, initiative, one of the best w/e [work experience] students we have had-good future in journalism if does well at school."
Between 1994-2000 he produced the Eltham Fire Brigade (CFA) newsletter 909 News.
By 1997 he was online and building websites.
Between 2005-09 he helped build the Kinglake Football/Netball Club’s (KFNC) media profile by “getting us [KFNC] into all the local papers.” He also produced the home game newsletter Laker’s Lip during this time.
He was the last person to produce and publish Thursday night footy club team sheets and distribute them to local businesses after Thursday night training.
In 2009 he helped ABC Kinglake Ranges (94.5FM) to air and became a member of International Federation of Journalists’ and Australia’s Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance.
In late 2016, he was accepted on merit to complete a Bachelor of Media & Communications (Journalism) at La Trobe University.
Until June 2017 he also provided articles to The Local Paper.
On June 14, 2017 Geelan Media launched Kinglake Ranges News, the district’s first live local news site.
As at April 23, 2019 Kinglake Ranges News is Murrindini Shire’s #1 news website with over 13,000 more readers a month than any other Murrindindi Shire based print/online media organisations.
