Australian National Piano Award The Australian National Piano Award showcases some of Australia’s most brilliant emerging pianists

Acclaimed for its standard of excellence, the Award is held every two years in Shepparton, Victoria and represents a true test of artistic talent and technical mastery in the world of classical piano. Aged between 21 and 35 years, 13 pianists will compete for the top honour, national recognition, concert engagements and $65,000 in cash and prizes, funded by our valued sponsors. The Australian National Piano Award is designed by Max Cooke and Darryl Coote.

Alex Raineri Pianist received the First Prize in 2014.

Alex Raineri is an Australian classical pianist, globally recognised as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician.His international performances include tours throughout America, South-East Asia, United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Germany, Austria and Australia. Alex is the Artistic Director of the annual Brisbane Music Festival and is a passionate exponent and commissioner of contemporary music. He has commissioned over 70 works, and delivered over 130 world premieres and over 169 Australian premieres.

Jocelyn Ho received the First Prize in 2010.

Jocelyn Ho is a composer, performer and theorist. Her compositions have performed internationally, including in France, Germany, America and Australia. Jocelyn is an Assistant Professor of Performance Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Herb Alpert School of Music. She is a Young Steinway Artist and a founding member of the Sydney Piano Trio.

He has an impressive international career and is in constant demand globally and has recorded with ABC Classic since 2015.Jayson has a detailed understanding of piano technique and regularly presents masterclasses in prestigious schools and music colleges across the United Kingdom and Australia. In 2024, he will be an Award adjudicator.

The biennial Award is open to Australian and Australian-based pianists aged 21 to 35 years – it recognises the pursuit of professional excellence, technical brilliance and extraordinary flair.

Unlike some other competitions, no contestant can win the Award with just one impressive performance. Award finalists must professionally perform a range of solo recitals from classical masterpieces by Bach, Haydn, Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven and many other composers.

Our Story

Acclaimed for its standard of excellence, the Award is held every two years in Shepparton, Victoria and represents a true test of artistic talent and technical mastery in the world of classical piano. It is on again from 3 to 8 September 2018. Aged between 21 and 35 years, 14 pianists will compete for the top honour, national recognition, concert engagements and $68,000 in cash and prizes. The Australian National Piano Award is celebrating 26 years since it’s inception and is considered one of the most notable classical piano competitions in Australia.
