Last year, we waited over a week for the Gibb River Road to open and gave up. We recently made it across the Pentecost and are ready to explore. The first 100km to Ellenbrae was very rocky and corrugated. Home Valley is a delight with beautiful views over the river and to the Cockburn Ranges.

Sunsets at Cable Beach, Broome, are always spectacular but just that bit more special from the back of a camel albeit not particularly comfortable 🐫 We enjoyed a one-hour sunset ride aboard Barney the yellow camel, apparently the alpha male of his herd but very well behaved and relaxed, and who was content to lope along the shoreline while we took in the stunning view.

On our way to WA, we took the Buchannan Highway shortcut through Top Springs, which saves about 180km but misses Katherine. It's a mix of good and slow dirt with some beautiful NT scenery, including Jasper Gorge.

On our way west we stayed in Mt Isa for a couple of days and I planned to do a diff and transfer case oil change. But it didn't work out as I hoped.I just could not get the fill plug off the rear diff because it was way over tight and it had been rounded at the last service. Thanks Toyota apprentice. Luckily, I didn't drain the oil first. Thanks to RUMS mechanical who came to my rescue.We are good for another 40000km. I was told the plug is 15/16AF not 24mm. Is that right?
Plenty to see with the mine and smelters right in town.

Make sure your tow vehicle is up to the task before hitting the road with your caravan. Both the car and the van must be in top condition with regular checks on wheel nuts, tyre pressures, brakes, tyres, brake lights, turn signals and wheel bearings. If in doubt, check with an expert.
