Bark Ladies: Eleven Artists from Yirrkala is an exhibition that celebrates the National Gallery of Victoria’s extraordinary collection of work by Yolŋu women artists from the Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre (Buku), in North-East Arnhem Land. Buku is the Indigenous community-run art centre located in Yirrkala, a small Aboriginal community, approximately 700 kilometres east of Darwin. Works by women from the Yirrkala region have been developing an appreciative audience, both nationally and internationally.

According to Buku, under Yolŋu Law the ‘Land’ extends to include sea, and both land and sea are connected in a single cycle of life for which the Yolŋu hold their songs, sacred designs and art. Yolŋu women at Buku are known for channelling this unique worldview into daring and innovative works of art that demonstrate their mastery over the unique medium of bark.

For more than two decades the NGV has been acquiring important works on bark by women artists from Buku, who before 2000 seldom painted on bark or made ḻarrakitj (painted hollow poles). Bark Ladies: Eleven Artists from Yirrkala is an important exhibition that brings together great singular master artists and shares their important stories with a Melbourne audience.

The exhibition highlights significant works by Noŋgirrŋa Marawili, Ms N Yunupiŋu, Gulumbu Yunupiŋu, Barrupu Yunupiŋu, Dhambit Munuŋgurr, Mulkun Wirrpanda, Naminapu Maymuru-White, and more.

Gabrielle Chanel Fashion Manifesto 🖤 is the 1st exhibition in Australia to focus exclusively on the significant contribution to 20th-century fashion culture by the renowned French couturière Gabrielle Chanel (1883–1971).

Chanel devoted her life to creating, perfecting, and promoting a new type of feminine elegance, grounded in the reality of women’s lives. The exhibition highlights how Chanel rewrote fashion conventions to transform women’s wardrobes with her innovative ideas, pioneering approach to fabric and construction, and utmost consideration of the female form.

This was her fashion manifesto: a design style based on principles of comfort, streamlined simplicity and ease of movement that became a template for modern living.

Visually sumptuous, the exhibition charts the evolution of the famous ‘Chanel style’ – a look best embodied by the designer herself. It explores the characteristics of her work, her codes, and her legacy. Spanning nine sections, organised chronologically and then thematically, Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto illustrates the spirit of freedom and defiance that characterised Chanel’s design language throughout the twentieth century.

Curated by the Palais Galliera, Paris and presented in partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria, the exhibition features over 100 outfits as well as jewellery, accessories, cosmetics and perfumes - all drawn from the rich holdings of the Palais Galliera and the Patrimoine de CHANEL, complemented by works from public museums and private collections, creating this rare opportunity to see a comprehensive display of Gabrielle Chanel’s works from the full span of her long career.

The Harry Potter Series has been a very well-loved series that has become one of the biggest parts of our entertainment history.

The lighting, the sound, the special effects, the props and costumes, the talented acting, and all the magic are incredibly interconnected. It's been a while since our last post 🤗 This October is Mental Health Month, and we want to check in with everyone here. There's no denying that these past two years have put so much pressure on us, impacting our mental health and the ability to create our best work at all times.
