24 January 2024, 6-8pm
Triple H 100.1 FM - Radio Tagumpay
[Broadcasting in Filipino and English].

Mabuhay ka-Tagumpays!

Welcome to the fourth week of January.
In celebration of Children’s Week, the Sentro Rizal of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) presents “Sa Kuwento Natin: E-Storytelling of Indigenous Filipino Tales” and “Sa Kuwento Natin II: E-Storytelling of Filipino Fables” as retold by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario. Please check the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney NSW FB page for further details.

Here in Sydney, this week is the final week of Sydney Festival – a city-wide celebration of culture, creativity and the questioning mind that showcases our nation’s diverse storytellers to the world, whilst drawing the world’s finest artists to Sydney. Many of Australia’s most memorable productions have resulted from Sydney Festival and the theme this year is: fostering a culture of safety and inclusivity. One of the highlights of the festival is the New Beginnings Festival - a unique celebration of the creative work of diverse artists, performers and craftspeople including First Nations, refugee and migrant backgrounds. Now entering its eighth year, this family-friendly festival will once again liven up Darling Harbour at the Australian National Maritime Museum this Australia Day long weekend, January 27.

DOBBY, a Filipino and Aboriginal musician proudly rooted in the Murrawarri and Ngemba lands of NSW will be one of the performers.

As we have previously mentioned, we in the Radio Tagumpay team are all volunteers who are dedicated and inspired to serve the community. To accommodate work, family and other commitments, members do not necessarily go in the studio every week. Thanks to the power of technology, tonight’s show will be presented by the RT friends Joel dela Rama, Grazie Panlican and Ery Rivera, with our techie guy Andrew Russell joining in from Canberra.

Radio Tagumpay welcomes and appreciates participation of our listeners and guests. However, their comments and views are not necessarily of Radio Tagumpay nor of Triple H 100.1FM.

Radio Tagumpay - Filo Pop Talk Jan 17

17/01/2024

Radio Tagumpay is privileged and glad to have interviewed Jim Paredes and Boboy Garrovillo before their Australian concerts celebrating APO's 50th Anniversary.

Who does not know Jim Paredes and Boboy Garrovillo, and APO Hiking Society? We thought to share background information about them especially for the young ones who did not grow up during APO'S early days.

The Apolinario Mabini Hiking Society, later popularly known as APO Hiking Society, or simply APO, are a Filipino musical group, that comprised, Danny Javier, Jim Paredes and Boboy Garrovillo. Today, Today, with the passing of Danny, the group consists of only Jim and Boboy as a duo.

APO Hiking Society are regarded as one of the pillars and icons of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). The group was formed and had its fledgling beginnings in 1969 at the Ateneo de Manila High School, with 12 members: Lito de Joya, Sonny Santiago, Gus Cosio, Renato Garcia, Chito Kintanar, Kenny Borton, Bruce Brown, Butch Dans, Doden Besa, Ric Segreto Macaraeg, Jim Paredes, Boboy Garrovillo, and the 13th member,Danny Javier, who joined in college. The group's name was created from the acronym AMHS representing their school with a witty twist having an irreverent reference to the Philippine revolutionary intellectual and hero, Apolinario Mabini, and later shortened to "Apo", an Ilocano term for a wise man or a Tagalog term of grandchildren, and later re-branded to "APO" (all caps). Contrary to popular belief, the "Apo" name was not a reference to the Philippines's highest peak, the potentially active stratovolocano Mount Apo.

As the students advanced into college, their lead vocalist, Danny Javier joined the group. After graduation, the majority of its members left to pursue individual careers, with only three members remaining, made up of Javier, Jim Paredes, and Boboy Garrovillo.

Jim says: "Grateful for 50 years of music performances, concerts, hits, meets and greets through four generations and still surprising and delighting our audience."

Radio Tagumpay thanks Jim and Boboy for making time to do the interesting and enjoyable interview; also to Annabelle Regalado Borja of eTalent International and Betta Dans, Manager of APO for making arrangements for the interview. It is is also grateful to Andrew Russell, for the technical support to make the interview possible.
