Episode 16 of the @notquitewritepodcast is here and she’s a loose one! Ed made the fatal error of having a drink before recording ended… and Amanda drank the rest of the bottle!
We’re talking the movie Poor Things and whether it’s a feminist masterpiece or just another vehicle for the #malegaze
We touch on the topic of book-to-film adaptations and the importance (or not) of staying true to the source material.
Plus Amanda lets loose on yet another male celebrity. This time it’s Timothee Chalamet in the firing line(and we’re still not sure why…)
So, grab a wine and listen now on your podcast platform of choice to join the conversation.
Cheers! 🍷

Our final interview at @wordsonthewaves writers festival was with @bennymck and @semple_mentality following a rare writers festival treat: an all male panel!
Craig’s memoir, ‘The Cop Who Fell to Earth’, tells the story of his “breakdown” (or was it a “breakthrough”?) and his experience with processing and growing after PTSD brought about by his decades-long career as a homicide detective.
Craig now shares his story with other cops, and he had many words of wisdom to share with us about how to reframe trauma with a growth mindset.

We spoke to @lauren_chater_author at the @wordsonthewaves writers festival about historical fiction and telling women’s stories.
This is one for the #Bridgerton fans. Just pure opulence and drama at its best. Lauren describes ‘The Beauties’ as a book about “The Victoria’s Secret models of the 17th Century.”

Such a fantastic and wide-ranging chat with this literary pair at the @wordsonthewaves writers festival.
Bruce and Lyn shared with us the process of collaborating on their epistolary-style book, ‘Black Duck: a Year at Yumburra’, which chronicles a year on the Black Duck farm following devastating bushfires.
Bruce and Lyn are proponents of a more traditional style of #horticulture based on principles handed down through generations of #Indigenous history. We talked about the state of the Australian environment now and how a return to traditional farming methods may in fact be our best move forward.
We got the inside scoop on bush tucker and how Black Duck’s “fusion” cuisine includes lasagne sheets from kangaroo grass! 🦘

We spoke with @walshtoby and @cswilshire at the @wordsonthewaves writers festival. Both were there to discuss #AI and the opportunities and threats posed by the world’s fastest ever evolving technology.
They describe the boom of large language models and technology such as #chatgpt as a “digital gold rush” with huge implications for creatives and the world at large.
In a world where everyone has an opinion, it was refreshing to get the insights from the experts.

Another fascinating chat at @wordsonthewaves writers festival, this time with @stephaniewoodsydney, author of the memoir ‘FAKE’.
Stephanie’s book follows her experience as the victim of a romance scam, in this case a 14 month in-person relationship with a man who wasn’t at all what he claimed to be.
Stephanie’s story is about to hit the small screen, with @asherkeddieofficial playing Stephanie in the @paramountplusau series by the same name.
Stephanie shared with us what it was like to watch her story unfold. (It may or may not have involved a fair bit of wine! 🍷)

We could have chatted to Coast local @_juliegoodwin all day! Julie was at @wordsonthewaves writers festival to talk about her book, ‘Your Time Starts Now’, which tells the story of her life and all the highs and lows she has experienced both before and after her @masterchefau fame.
We found Julie to be a warm, friendly and funny woman. Julie has been very open about her struggles with depression, and we’re so grateful to her for helping to smash through those social stigmas that prevent women from reaching out for help.
It was a moving chat, but also a fun one. We’ll certainly be cheering Julie on as she takes the stage for her next venture with @dancingau! 💃🏼

We recently had the honour of interviewing @laurajeanmckay at the @wordsonthewaves writers festival. Laura was there to talk about her book, ‘The Animals in that Country’ which is critically-acclaimed and highly awarded, taking out the @arthurcclarkefoundation award, the Victorian Prize for Literature, an @abia_awards amongst others.
The premise of the book is a fictional pandemic in which humans gain the ability to understand animals, and it’s a dystopian look at the potential consequences of this understanding.
Interestingly, the idea for this book predated the Covid pandemic, and came out at a time where life was very much mimicking art. Laura talks about this experience and how it felt to watch the real pandemic unfold while promoting this book (she swears she didn’t start Covid as a publicity stunt!)

We were honoured to meet former Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty AO and her writing partner @smethurst.sue following their panel at @wordsonthewaves. We discussed their book, ‘Hope’ and the ongoing fight against #domesticviolence in Australia and around the world.
The book reflects on Rosie’s many achievements as an advocate in the decade since her son’s murder. Many Australians stand in awe of Rosie’s resilience, however she’s the first to admit that her grief can still overpower her at times.
Readers of the book will be grateful for Sue’s ability to penetrate Rosie’s humble exterior to help tell this very important story, to continue the conversation about domestic violence.
It was a touching, thought-provoking and vulnerable chat which we are delighted to share with you. Search ‘Not Quite Write’ wherever you get your podcasts, or listen via the link in our bio.
