A quiver of boards is the surfing equivalent to a golfer’s bag of clubs. At times, a quiver is referred to as a mere collection of three or four boards, but a far healthier number required for your own sanity is 20 plus. Here, in edition 59, we explore the world of surfing quivers…

As for the wood itself, four-year-old trees have been selected at the end of their lives and cut, dried, and dressed to specifically suit the surfboard industry.

“This balsa is the best material for your eco-friendly boards. This will give you flex, feather feel, and ease of bending and building your boards. Wait until you try it! What a difference!

Mark said he and Michele were keen for the European contingent to see how good this wood is, adding that Michele can cut the wood to size, build a solid blank, or build a hollow blank for customers with all goods able to be shipped throughout Europe.

This is what had to say on the arrival of his stock in Verona

“Finally, we have some 150kg/m3 balsa in stock in Italy. We have been working on this shipment for years. Europe is ahead of the pack with the development of eco-friendly surfboards.

“At Riley Australia, we have been importing and building boards in Sydney for over 25 years. In Australia, we supply the likes of Outer Island Surfboards, Dick Van Straalen, Sam Egan, and Pieter Surfboards.

“We have been sending balsa to single retail customers, but the freight was expensive. This is why we loaded a container and sent it directly there (Italy).”

Mark Riley’s () beautiful balsa has made its way across the globe to Italy, linking up with former factory hand Michele Vallenari. Michele set up his own surfboard-building business in his homeland a decade back and recently accepted his first shipment of Riley Balsa. Looking at his craftsmanship, we’re sure Michele will put it to good use.

Surf until you’re 100! Say what?

is taking a crew of surfers keen to carve across to Roti to learn the ways of Peruvian legend Felipe Pomar.

To those unaware, Felipe Pomar is an 80 year old surfer from Peru who still charges. Pomar was crowned the first officially recognised World Surfing Champion in 1965. Now living in Kauai, Hawaii, he has inspired the likes of legends such as Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern-day surfing, and Laird Hamilton.

Felipe Pomar has developed a program to help anyone surf until they are 100 years of age. He wants to share his secrets to longevity and has invited Mark and a small group to hear about his journeys and participate in his remarkable program to keep everyone in the water for longer.

If you are interested – you can reach out to Mark on email at [email protected] or head to his Instagram

There’s a few people who cross into our path that make us go, “yes, that’s Smorgasboarder. That’s the grassroots surfing community and everything we hope to celebrate in this magazine of ours.”

is one of those people, and instantly drew our attention when some rather insane surfing shots from Norway surfaced on our social media.

After a little digging, we stumbled across more of his killer photography, credit to his partner for these shots , which captures everything from board shaping and global surf adventures to miscellaneous building projects.

The more we investigated, the more we realised that Jake was a pretty cool dude. So, when we came across a photograph of his colourful collection of surfboards, each propped up next to a shed that he converted into a shaping bay with his dad, we couldn’t help but reach out to him with the need to share his story.

His story is a very interesting one! Give it a read in our latest edition of Smorgasboarder (link in bio).

.dobrzynska is an example of someone who actually uses their platform for good – if you read her story in edition 59 you will come to know she is a big advocate for ways in which we can help preserve the oceans we love but she is also an advocate for women in the world of kiteboarding.

‘Empowered women can empower women’ was the mantra that drove her to create SheKites – a place for women who share a love of the wind, waves, and water, and an organisation that provides coaching programs introducing kiteboarding basics to beginners while helping seasoned riders refine their skills.

Growing up by the Baltic Sea in the beautiful city of Gdansk, Poland, Agata Dobrzynska developed a profound love of the ocean at a young age.

Little did she know that this adoration would shape her entire life as an Australian kiteboarding champion… with more than just a few state titles up her sleeve.

Before she was ever set foot on a kiteboard, however, she was carving it up on the slopes, working as a snowboard instructor, competing in Polish Championships, and even proudly representing the University of Gdansk in slalom events.

Keep reading about .dobrzynska story in edition 59 – available now online.

I am shattered to hear this news. I had the upmost respect for Geoff McCoy. He called it as it was. No bu****it whatsoever. I so admired what he had done, what he had to say and how gracious he was with his time. I would happily sit and talk with him for hours. RIP Geoff.

Surfing and camping go hand-in-hand, don't they? Not just because some of the best camping spots sit adjacent to great surf, but because surfers are in their element in the thick of nature, whether that be on land or out at sea.

For Robbie Marshall (), camping and surfing have always been closely connected through a passion for working with timber and travelling way off the beaten track. In fact, you could say that he is most at home when he is whittling away a timber surfboard in some uncharted part of the Australian bush with his hand-modified Troopy by his side.

As the founder of Soul Arch Surfboards he certainly knows what he is talking about when it comes to shaping reclaimed timber. Keep reading about this story in edition 57 (link in bio).

Most surfers pick up one or two of these pastimes and run with them, but Kale Brock is not most people – he does it all.

On the surface, he travels the world surfing while telling stories about surfing, but there’s a lot more to his vibrant, multifaceted career than that. Before his days of television, film and social media stardom, Kale grew up in Adelaide, which, as he pointed out, has a lot of ocean but not a lot of waves.

Readers may recognise as the curator of Smorgasboarder’s ‘Above Board’ column, where every edition he delves into legislation that is becoming increasingly relevant to the world of surfing. Hailing from travis_schultz_partners, a boutique law firm on the Sunshine Coast, he is as in tune with the law as he is with the waves.

This is the story of a young Aussie who sailed through the North Sea, eight-metre tides and the busiest shipping lane in the world only to be (temporarily) arrested in Spain.

As with most good-sailing stories, a man overboard, romance in France and a near catastrophic collision also play their part.

17/01/2024

When I picked up the board (it was a surprise present for Phoebe's birthday), Chris Garrett Shapes greeted me and hugged me, he was just so excited about building the board for her. I just love this guy. We have shared so many laughs and had so many great chats through the years of producing Smorgasboarder. I didn't know Chris before we started the mag and now I love him like family. I cannot speak highly enough of him as a person and as an incredible surfboard artisan and artist.

As for the board itself, Chris and I decided to present Phoebe with something a little out of the ordinary. After all, Smorgasboarding is all about variety and experiencing new things. It is 9'2" (a little longer than what she is used to riding) with the added length for getting some momentum on the predominantly gutless Sunshine Coast waves. It is a quad, again IT IS built for speed to get some momentum and boy does it fly. And it is made with a super lightweight EPS blank and 6-ounce fibreglass cloth.

Naturally, if you're going custom, you want it full custom, particularly if you're intending to celebrate a milestone event.

Chris may have semi-retired, but I wasn't going to miss the opportunity to get a board from him, albeit for Phoebe, although being her dad I am of course authorised to ride. Chris is amongst a few shapers on my bucket list I have to acquire a magic board from. Thank you once again sir for the experience and the board which is so quick it almost moves faster than the eye can see. Or, as the old jungle saying goes, 'Phantom is quick like lighting.'
