tenSion side table: "I have long thought that some of the natural properties of wood have been under-exploited in furniture making. Properties such as elasticity, tensional and compressive strength. In this piece I sought to realise a structurally sound but demountable bench seat, using pressure, tension, compression and friction to achieve stability. Easily assembled and disassembled, this seat could be scaled bigger or smaller. The dramatic timber is black bean (Castanospermum australe)."

Adapt A Bench: "I designed this piece to be more than just a bench. Its functionality is much wider: in addition to being a comfortable two-seater bench, the two removable backrests (stored under the bench seat) convert the bench into a chair, or two chairs, or a chaise lounge. The bench is also wider than usual: ideal to lie back on. Its rounded corners and edges, with matching cylindrical legs, enhance its look of comfort. It is intended to be ideal in an apartment, where space is typically limited and a multi-functional piece of furniture is particularly useful."

tenSion side table: "I have always been seduced by the beauty of wood but this piece is the result of a career-long interest in exploring the full potential of wood's other physical properties. I draw inspiration, as do many smitten woodworkers, from Japanese joinery techniques, Quaker sparseness and mid-century modernist line. Whilst some of the individual components of this table rely on modern joinery and epoxy adhesive, the way they are held to each other is purely due to tension, compression and friction. Somewhat like an arch, you release the key piece and the whole thing can come apart. It can be reassembled faster than you can say Ikea. The timber is black bean, (Castanospermum australe) from Queensland. It was milled about 50 years ago, destined for Commonwealth Bank fit-outs before the bank went to its yellow and black branding and Formica interiors."

Large hollow forms in camphor laurel: "This year I have really focused on form and design. To me the best way of exploring this is through hollow forms and I love the challenge of larger pieces. The biggest of these is 450mm which was quite a challenge. The tree was a salvaged camphor laurel from a local backyard and the grain was better than I expected."

"The Wunderkammer is a glass fronted display cabinet inspired by the works of James Krenov. It was made from a single board of American cherry and finished in linseed oil. The purpose of the piece was to be able to display a multitude of items, this is achieved by a shelf integrated into the stand, internal glass shelving, and a fully lined drawer with removable trays which increase the storage space. I created the door handle, drawer pull and shelf pins from solid brass. I got the idea from seeing the hand carved door pulls and shelf pins in Krenov's "Cabinetmakers Notebook". The piece does not demonstrate any new thinking, but is a reflection and celebration of the history fine wooden furniture updated and applied to a contemporary piece."

"This console typifies my design orientation: functional but unusual. In its simplest form, console is a high table, shallow in depth, with four legs. I have reinterpreted that basic form into a design with two elements that enhance its functionality and make the piece more unusual and memorable. Firstly, the design creates two levels for the table surface by the introduction of a small drawer on one side. This allows for a more stylish display of decorative items placed on the two levels. The drawer is visually balanced by the inclusion of a cubbyhole of the same size at the other end. Secondly, the legs also depart from the “usual”. At one end, a solid slab leg continues the dimensions and grain of the tabletop. On the other end is a trestle leg splayed to the width of the cubbyhole. The two legs are then braced together by a crossbar fixed with visible wedge joints. I’ve called the piece 'Cartagena' after the beautiful city in Colombia, the country of my birth."

S23 coffee table "Moodlab’s freshly designed studios in Prahran, Melbourne required luxury furniture surfaces that would avoid tonal clashes with their monitors during a colour-grade. We used neutral tones to suit the brief, whilst showcasing the light-play and natural texture of the materials. The different heights and diameters of the circular surfaces allows the user to customise the space, and offers a generous magazine-rack to display reference books for clients to browse"

"In this piece I set out to invoke a Japanese feel in its design. I also wanted the piece to look attractive from all sides. The use of two wood types allows a subtle colour contrast between the various elements of the piece the highlight its structural design. The stacked frames supporting the table top are inspired by the extended bearers and joists seen in the traditional Japanese pavilion structures. Those structures are typically made with cedar and cypress, the two woods I have used in my piece."

"Little Frog. Big Climb conveys a serious message whilst being joyfully inspired by the nightly chorus of frogs near my workshop. It celebrates the beauty and fragility of our natural world and symbolises hope amidst climate crisis. Carved with traditional gouges, with some gorgeous undercutting fun (my favourite!). I also used the Japanese ukibori technique for the frog’s raised bumps; carve, compress bumps (with a knitting needle!), carve flush and steam…the bumps pop up as if by magic! Height: 360mm."

"Not quite fully cooked, Al Dente's inception was noodly at best – take a simple shape and make it cabinet-y. Bent wood appearing effortless, there are many complicated techniques packed into this facile white oak cabinet. "Japan has deeply influenced my woodworking journey, which was ignited a few years ago by a visit to a hand-tool museum in Kobe and numerous explorations of wooden temples and shrines. It felt natural to take that approach and aesthetic to the design of a whisky cabinet to capture the reverential, precious, and often intimate act of drinking a beautiful whisky.

Named Oomugi, meaning barley in Japanese, the detailing is inspired by the cultivation of this essential ingredient. Contrasting cherry and sycamore represent the seasons in Japan, which is famous for its cherry blossoms, or ‘sakura’, in spring and red acer leaves, or ‘momiji’, in autumn. This meticulous design transforms whisky drinking into a transcendent experience—an act of worship."

The Sonus Radiogram: "Inheriting the original 1967 HMV radiogram from my grandfather, I wanted to repurpose it, giving it a new lease of life. As this is my first piece of furniture I tried to incorporate as many techniques of woodworking into the player as possible, thereby giving me the most rounded education from my course here at Chippendale. This includes CNC, lasering, veneering, laminations, turning, waterfalled mitred edges and introducing fuming to half of the spiral design whilst leaving the other side natural. The electrical components were in need of repair so I found an expert, delivered the radiogram along with a reverse jig to be retrofitted to in order to make sure that any alterations would accommodate the new carcase. The laminated speaker horns are both functional and aesthetic considering the grain direction to mimic sound leaving the unit and also to actually project the sound out. The spiral design consists of 24 individual pieces of American white oak that have been CNC cut, routed and meticulously sanded. half of which were fumed to give the contrasting colour and were then glued together, shaped and mitred to give the waterfall continuing spiral effect."
