Last week we returned to Melbourne, the birthplace of Magazine, to celebrate 20 years - and the community that has made it all possible 💚

The evening brought together the rich and varied community that has shaped Sanctuary since its first issue - readers and subscribers, architects and designers, contributors and volunteers, storytellers, Renew staff past and present, and more. What stood out most was the shared commitment to thoughtful design, sustainability, and the generosity of exchanging knowledge, expertise and personal stories that has defined Sanctuary for 20 years.

We’re deeply grateful to Managing Editor Anna Cu***ng and Founding Editor Donna Luckman, for sharing their reflections on Sanctuary’s evolution. Anna has been part of Sanctuary for 15 of its 20 years - a testament to her passion for inspiring and educating everyday people about thoughtful, sustainable design and energy-efficient homes.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to everyone who has supported Sanctuary along the way. This milestone belongs to the community that continues to build it!

Sanctuary #73 is here!

Our prefab + modular special dives into the fast-growing world of offsite construction, and why it’s transforming sustainable home design. 🏡

We explore some of Australia’s most beautiful homes - from off-grid coastal retreats and 8.8-Star family builds, to modular and panelised designs that cut waste and lift performance. There’s also gardening inspiration from Tim Pilgrim, a powerful conversation on gender, equity and architecture, a roadmap to zero-carbon homes, and much more.

Out now, in both print and digital 🤎

We’re celebrating 20 years of ! 🧡

This beloved magazine has been bringing you the best in Australian sustainable design since our very first issue back in 2005.

The idea to launch a new, environmentally focused architecture magazine was the result of "a tipping point in conversations about climate change early in the new millennium" founding editor Donna Luckman says. Originally taglined ‘Sustainable living with style’, the magazine’s mission was to showcase beautiful eco-friendly homes and provide practical advice on the design strategies, materials and systems needed to achieve them.

In this special feature article in our current issue, we chat about all things Sanctuary with a collection of people who’ve been involved with the magazine since the early days. Read it here: https://renew.org.au/sanctuary-magazine/news/two-decades-of-sustainable-living-with-style/

It was fabulous to celebrate Sanctuary magazine's 20th anniversary in Sydney earlier this month with friends and supporters, many of whom had a long history in sustainable housing. Thanks to Anna Cu***ng, current editor, for sharing her thoughts in conversation with CEO Helen Oakey, about sustainable design, some of her favourite stories, and what she hopes will be emerging trends over the next decades.

We are excited to be doing it all again in Melbourne on November 20 - register here: https://events.humanitix.com/celebrate-20-years-of-sanctuary-melbourne

Brisbane architect Andrew Noonan’s home is an exemplary demonstration that a 140-year-old house can be brought into the 21st century in style. The original Queenslander was rejuvenated and a new wing added to west; Andrew targeted the energy rating sweet spot for high performance with low embodied carbon, and used reclaimed materials wherever possible. The result is a house with a "sanctuary-like vibe" that is much more comfortable year-round and better connected to its lush garden.

When their original plans fell through, Kari and Tom started their design and build process again. Luckily, the outcome was better than they had imagined: a modest-sized off-grid home designed to sit lightly on its site, with bold use of colour. “I love the connection with the site – it’s a very special place because we are surrounded by bush,” Kari says. “The house feels different because of the way it sits, well nestled into the land and with windows everywhere. I can see wallabies and sacred kingfishers before getting out of bed, which is pretty special.”
