Did you know that when residents see a house in their suburb with rooftop solar, they are more likely to consider solar panels themselves? It’s called the neighbourhood effect - the more people install solar, the more ‘normalised’ it becomes, the more people install solar! Research has estimated that around 18% of new solar installations are as a result of this effect.

That’s the power of local action. And that’s the power of Sustainable House Day.

We are so excited to announce that we have received over 240 applications in total with more than 150 homes around Australia that will open their doors to the community on Sunday 4th May. Thank you to everyone who applied to have their homes featured - we couldn't have done this without you.

From dated to delightful

For a couple who love having friends over, Daniel and Aidan’s Canberra townhouse lacked both the space and style needed for hosting. With the help of the designers and craftspeople at Thor's Hammer, they infused character and warmth into the place with reclaimed timber joinery and thoughtful design choices, making it more functional for day-to-day living. Sanctuary 69 has the full story.

Sustainable House Day is returning in May and we're currently open to sponsors. Last year we partnered with some leaders in the sustainability sector that helped us run this month-long event, which lends to our shared goal of making Australian homes more sustainable and energy efficient.

If your business is open to sponsoring this event, we have four sponsorship tiers, suitable for a range of different budgets. Each tier has their own advertising and promotional value in both print and digital advertising, as well as promotional efforts in Sustainable House Day. This annual event attracts thousands of viewers, both in person or online by Australians who are actively researching and highly interested in building sustainable new homes or retrofitting their homes.

Sustainability unlocked...

In suburban Perth, Amy and Wynand’s house is a masterclass in low-energy, high-liveability design on a small, subdivided block. “We use almost every square metre
of this house on a weekly basis. There’s no wasted space,” says Wynand of the compact, 7.9-Star home. There's a great little north-facing garden, too. Dive into the story in our current issue, available at newsagents or online now. https://renew.org.au/sanctuary-magazine/

We are excited to announce Sustainable House Day 2025 will be running for yet another year on Sunday 4 May.

Sustainable House Day, hosted by Renew, is an annual event offering the chance to explore Australia’s most inspiring homes and gain insights from those who designed, built, and live in them.

In 2025, we’re focusing on retrofits and renovations, encouraging Australians to make their homes more energy-efficient and comfortable. Showcase your sustainable features, like solar panels or energy-efficient upgrades, to inspire others.

Applications are now open for homeowners to open their homes to the public. If your home is energy-efficient and all-electric (or on the way to being), share your experience by hosting Open House tours as part of Renew’s nationwide Sustainable House Day.
