Technology fails us sometimes. Did you know that external hard drives have an average life span of just 3 to 5 years? Don't risk losing your precious memories! Back up your photos and consider additional storage options to keep them safe.

Why External Hard Drives Fail:

> Mechanical Wear and Tear: Over time, the moving parts in an external hard drive can wear out.

> Physical Damage: Hard drives are susceptible to damage from drops or impacts.

> Environmental Factors: Extreme temperatures, humidity, and dust can affect a hard drive's performance.

> Data Corruption: Power surges or sudden losses of power can corrupt the data stored on a hard drive.

An alternative to external hard drives are solid state drives (SSDs) These drives have no moving parts and are generally more durable than traditional hard drives.

I give you permission to delete recipes off your phone. Be honest with yourself, are you ever going to cook that chicken burger recipe you screenshot 2 years ago?

If you really want to keep them, move your recipe photos to the notes app on your phone. Then you can DELETE the photo in your library.

On my desk today...

3 mini travel photo albums from 1992.

The albums are falling apart so it is a good thing this client reached out. She will now have the peace of mind knowing that her travel memories will be preserved.

A family timeline is an excellent tool for helping you sort your photos.

Sit down with your family and create a timeline of events. Start with births, marriages, and deaths, and then add additional information like career changes, family moves, historical events (COVID), personal achievements, vacations, and medical diagnoses.

Just start talking about when things happened and write it down. I bet you’ll learn something new about your family.

I offer scanning services for a large range of items. You may have printed photos which need preserving, you may have old handwritten recipes or school reports you would like scanned, you may have negatives or slides which were from your childhood.

Leave them in their albums or take them out, either way is fine. Protect them in a snap lock bag or plastic bag in case of rain during transit.

Sit back and relax and let me do all the fiddly work. This is my passion and I do actually really love it!!!

Many people are fearful of EHDs, but the truth is they are a very valuable tool in your backup system.

I personally use an EHD as ONE of my THREE copies to backup my photos. If you are unsure about EHD's, swipe through to learn more about them.

Don't know what do you do with all those old photos that need digitising? Send them to me and I will scan them for you.

Find all your photos to see exactly what you have.

Go to sortmyphotos.com.au and fill out the form on 'Scanning Services'.

Put your photos in plastic snap lock bags to protect them during transit.

Box them up and post them to me.

I will then scan your photos and return them to you on a USB drive. They will be easy to back up and share with family members.

Amazon Photos...

My hope is that Amazon Photos 'free unlimited photo storage' becomes available for Prime Members in Australia.

To be honest, at this stage, I can't really see the benefit of using this cloud service if you live in Australia.

This was taken the year before I started school. I had strawberry blonde hair that was very curly! Over the years my hair has changed to a natural brown colour, but it is still very curly! In this photo I am actually lying on my Dad's tummy during a family picnic!!! I love the way that I am looking directly into the camera.

It's crazy to think, a tradition of wearing coloured zinc on our faces, continues over 30 years later with my own children! Follow on, for a photo of this next week!

iCloud...

iCloud is the built-in cloud service on all Apple devices.

The benefits are that it's simple and automatic, seamlessly syncs across devices, optimises space (meaning you can take as many photos as you want no matter the size of your phone or computer!) and has great sharing capabilities.

The downsides are that it's a SYNC and not a BACKUP (no matter how many devices you see your items on, it should only be considered ONE copy), it's all-or-nothing, it's very difficult to leave, and it's not ideal for PC users.
