Before Christmas food prep can begin, you need to close the business properly before the holidays 🎄🎄🎄

Your first website got you to where you are. Maybe you built it yourself, it might have been cheap or even free. But your second website?

It should positively SHINE ✹

Building second (or third) websites is a joy, because by that stage the business owner GETS it. They understand how their business solves problems for their clients, what makes them different from their competitors and exactly where they are heading in the next 5 years.

And Isaac Horneman from Kalinda Constructions knew exactly what he wanted from his new website.

The site needed to reflect the high level finishes and the aesthetic of a master builder who’s focus is working closely with his clients to build their forever homes.

This was a full knockdown rebuild project, not just a simple reno. While the old Wix site had served them to this point, it was time to custom build a website that aligned with the business visually, strategically and had a streamlined customer experience.

That meant logo and branding. Messaging strategy. Multiple photoshoots so they could find a great local photographer who’s be able to capture their projects as they are completed, growing their online portfolio of work over time.

Like lots of building projects, there were inevitable delays. But the end result? A website that prospective clients can really get their teeth into as they try to choose the right builder to make their dream home a reality. https://www.kalindaconstructions.com.au/

It's been kinda quiet around here for a while...

This is why.

It's hard - if not impossible- to talk about grief, loss, sadness and trauma when you're in the midst of it. There just aren't any words to say.

I know incredible business owners who have gone through- or are still deep in the trenches- of gut-wrenching stuff. Unspeakable things happening with their kids. Heartbreaking relationship breakdown. Permanent injury & disability. Financial devastation. Terminal diagnoses. Premature deaths.

Grief is part of life. It's how we move through it- and try to work through it- that matters. I'm learning lots along the way, but I believe it's important to talk about the impact of grief, if and when we can.

This is NOT a hospital room.

Or an aged care facility. Or a rehab centre.

But it looks like it.

And that’s the trick when you’re marketing a brand new start-up like Water Monitor

Make it look legit.

Water Monitor is a simple device for tracking patient fluid intake accurately and easily. Heather-the inventor of Water Monitor and a former nurse- developed this ingenious bottle tag Art her Mum’s hospital bedside when she saw how hard it was to hit the hydration sweet spot, let alone measure it.

With the goal of getting some hospitals on board for a trial of the product, we helped Heather build the foundational marketing elements she needed to get to the next step.

With a clear Messaging Framework Heather can confidently talk about her product and know what’s important to the NUMs and hospital administrators who will be her ideal clients.

We got creative in mocking up a ‘hospital’ setting and she roped in some friends for a photoshoot, giving her product context and making it easy to see how it solves a problem. (Massive thanks to Alpha Lifecare for their kind assistance in lending us their medical showroom for the morning).

Heather was able to attend a medical expo with fresh, professionally designed DL flyers in hand, ready to chat to potential clients.

Now Water Monitor has a digital presence on Facebook and LinkedIn, people can find out more about Water Monitor and get in touch to arrange samples or a trial in their facility.

As a start-up, the list of wants was long, but the budget was small.

Narrowing that list to the most critical elements gave us a clear starting place, and meant Heather was able to get exactly what she needs. As the business grows, so will her budget and her investment in marketing.

From little things, big things can grow. đŸŒ±

Your website should be about THEM, and not you.

Honestly, it’s hard to make IT sexy.

Okay, so not actually sexy, but attractive. Relatable. Warm. Delivered by someone who has a pulse, a sense of humour and can talk like a human. (Incredible photos like this from help 😉)

Gravity I.T. Solutions have been clients since way back in 2018. In our first meeting, Glenn was really honest.

‘Look. I don’t have high expectations. I’ve worked with other marketers and they just don’t understand our industry. I’m really looking to build a relationship with someone will take the time to get to know what we do, and work with us for the long term’.

I was shocked (and a tiny bit offended), but every single thing he said in that initial meeting was true.

Marketing IT is hard. People need it, but they don’t really want to pay for it. They sure as heck don’t want to deal with the typical IT nerd who talks tech-speak and didn’t like dealing with people.

That’s why working with Gravity is so cool. Glenn has gathered a team of IT specialists who actually like talking to people. Who are good at explaining things in every day language. Who get a kick out of solving -and avoiding-IT problems.

So marketing that?? A smart, supportive team of people who genuinely want to help businesses thrive? That makes my job so much easier.

As this team continues to grow-and they hired another team member between booking the photoshoot and having the photoshoot- it’s a joy to tell their stories, show off their difference and help Glenn build a strong business for the future.

Sounds like a cop out, but it’s the truth.

I never know quite what to post on International Women’s Day.

So this year I just decided to shine a light on the women I’m privileged to work with who are doing great things in this world.

Giving people a hand up. Supporting vulnerable families. Improving people's employment skills. Supporting small business owners. Caring for pets and their people. Creating products that improve health. Delighting the senses with divine coffee and chocolate. Caring for others and making the world a better place. Bringing joy, beauty and warmth to those they come into contact with.

Happy (late) International Women's Day. You ladies ROCK.

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words.

Now, I don’t know if it’s exactly 1,000 but I do know that EVERY picture you use in your marketing should help tell your story.

Your people.
Your clients.
Your location.
Your services.

Even when people don’t want to have their photo taken.

Even when your space isn’t necessarily ‘Insta-worthy’ or styled to perfection.

Even when people say ‘You won’t want my ugly mug in the photos’.

Because I do.

I really, really truly do want to see them in the photos.

Because people connect with people.

My life isn’t air-brushed perfection and I’m guessing yours isn’t either. So show me what I can expect when I walk in the front door.

Show me the genuine smile of the people who’ll greet me and help me.

Show me the stacks of takeaway containers chock-full of home-made, delicious, nutritious food that you provide to people who are doing it tough.

Because I’m here for THAT:
the gritty, heart-warming beauty that exists in every human being and every day life, if only we pause long enough to stop and recognise it.

It sucks when you can’t fully deliver for a client.

It doesn’t happen often but LOTS of unavoidable (unprecedented?) things have happened in the last couple of years. And it’s what happened when we built a website for Home-Start Australia

Home-Start help families thrive by supporting parents and kids. As a mum, I’m blessed to have loving, helpful family close by. But for so many families, this just isn’t reality.

Home-Start provide parent-to-parent mentorship, home visiting programs, parenting support, community connections and lots, lots more.

As a not-for-profit, they rely on grants, donations and community funding to do their invaluable work.

So in 2021 we built the website, finally showcasing their work online so more people could get help. We scheduled a photoshoot, but had to cancel because of the dreaded C& #%d. After a hasty re-jig, we set the website live with minimal imagery and even a couple of- gasp- stock photos. It wasn’t ideal but it needed to happen.

The clients were delighted. With the link to the new live website on their applications, funding and grants were swiftly approved. And I was glad. But I wasn’t buzzing. I knew that photography was the crucial element needed to communicate the heart and soul of this organisation.

It took more than a year to reschedule the photoshoot. But we did it. We rounded up families and kids, rolled out more slime, bubbles, playdough, books and toys than you can imagine, called and made sure we were sufficiently caffeinated for a huge shoot with LOTS of kids.

And now we can unveil the website we wanted to, but couldn’t. The one that was stuck in the recesses of my imagination and my heart. It couldn’t be fully brought to life without photos of the beautiful people who are part of this inspiring organisation. But now it has been.

Sometimes things take longer than you want them to. But when you finally get there? It’s so worth the wait.

I’m pretty sure it’s not just me, but I could be wrong

I’ve noticed that lots of businesses have taken the extra week over the holiday break to extend (or find?!?) the vacay feels this year.

And while terrific ideas have been percolating over the holidays, the realities of business (and just life in general) can mean it sometimes takes longer to action things than we’d ideally like.

But this is your reminder:
Slow progress is STILL progress.

You are moving forward.
You are taking action.
Things are improving for the better.

You’ve got this. Hang in there and keep taking imperfect action. Done is better than perfect.

16/01/2023

This is not the usual ‘Start the new year strong!’ post.

As much as I’d love to be writing inspiring content about creating the kind of tomorrow you want, building a profitable business or a healthy mindset for the future, right now, I just can’t.

Because I’m right in the middle of the ‘one day’.

It’s no secret that real life intrudes on business. Every. Single. Day. (It’s more like moment by moment sometimes, especially if you have kids
)

And the Christmas closedown break was a valuable chance for a re-set and a beautiful REST full of wonderful energising things. Beach swims. Books. Sun-downers. Visits with treasured friends and family. Naps.

But the intricate threads of life are woven together in ways we can’t foresee. Precious family members spread like a net across the planet, near & far. New life, unexpectedly early. Illness. Injury. And of course, death: inevitable and expected, but with its own unique heartache.

When your extended family live in another country, you tell yourself that ‘one day’, you’ll get a phone call or a message that a loved one is at death’s door or has passed away. You formulate Plans A, B and C of what you think you’ll do in that given moment, one day when the call comes, depending on varying factors of kids and life and health and money and work and global lockdowns and flights.

After 24 years of theoretically knowing it, one day has come.

Today I drove my husband to the train station so he could get to the airport, and fly to the UK where he may, or may not, see his mum before her page in the mysterious book of life turns. It’s a one-way ticket because his return date isn’t set.

So much is unknown right now.

We don’t know if he’ll make it in time.

We don’t know how the next bit will play out or what anything will look like.

Navigating the death of a parent is hard for anybody, and every family is different. I’m deeply, eternally thankful for the foundation of faith our family built, because my mother-in-law is peaceful, prepared and in her own words ‘ready to go to glory’.

This story is unfolding, minute by minute in that excruciatingly beautiful way life has. And while we don’t know much about this chapter yet, I know there will be both silent tears and gut-wrenching sobs from the depths of our being. There’ll be prayers and memories, photos and food. Ceremony and stories, laughter, love, hugs and handshakes (it is Britain after all.) The sadness will be intermingled with happiness, joy and a gentle, incomprehensible sense of peace.

One day is always coming, until it’s here. And the only way through it, is through it. Living a day at a time and working with what we have in that moment.

I’m calling it
 that’s it for 2022, people.

The Marketing Side is officially on reading, swimming, coffee/wine/cheese/gin and laying in the hammock duties until next year.

Right after I do the Christmas shopping, baking and wrapping, of course.

It’s been a wild ride, but one I’m glad to get off for a while.

Thanks to for capturing my glazed eyes and concentration face at last week’s Christmas event.

My next biggest decision? Which book to start reading first.

Seriously, though 😳

It’s all happening round here at the moment as we wrap up some terrific projects for clients and I finally get to start my own Christmas preparations.

And if you’ve already finished your Christmas shopping? Don’t tell me. I don’t want to know.

There’s often half a moment in December- before the shutdown and after the super crazy busy stuff- when business owners have a couple of seconds to start thinking about 2023 and what they want to do with their marketing in the new year.

So if that’s you?

My calendar for next year is open. It’s really easy to book a chat or drop me an email.

Promise not to hassle you till after you’ve eaten too many Christmas treats, laid on a beach for a while and lost track of the days of the week.

Building your first website can be daunting, especially for a not-for-profit organisation.

It’s hard to know who to trust. Your organisation is complex. Protecting people’s privacy and dignity is critical. You need someone who can see the big picture and pull it all together.

That’s why Sarah from Maitland Region Community Support reached out. Formerly known as Maitland Neighborhood Centre, Sarah wanted to create a website that truly showcased the work her team delivers to people who are doing it tough in the Maitland region.

From food support, emergency relief, playgroups, cooking programs, advocacy and specialist information referral, the dedicated community workers at MRCS deliver practical support (on the daily) to give people a helping hand.

Once we understood the broad variety of services MRCS delivers, we knew we’d need a photoshoot to capture the goodness that happens in this unassuming brick building every day. And thanks to , I think we got exactly what we needed to show off the heart and soul of this grassroots organisation.

totally re-branded the organisation with a name change and a whole new visual identity, reflecting a vibrant community organisation where everyone is welcome.

Building the organisation’s first website and getting to pull together all those juicy elements made this a dream project to work on. And I knew we’d nailed it when I called Sarah to let her know the website was live, she logged on and squealed with delight.

Squeeeeeee!!!!!

This kind of project? This is 100% our wheelhouse. Our sweet spot. Our passion. When we get to highlight the valuable work NFPs do, they succeed, the community wins and the world is just a better place.

Shoot me a DM if your organisation needs this kind of glow up. ✹

I honestly believe not-for-profit organisations like Home-Start Australia deserve clear marketing that shows the world the incredible impact they have.

When Home-Start Australia brought me the brief to create a video to showcase their volunteers, it was a dream come true. We've been working together for a couple of years now, and their mission resonates deeply with me. The difference this program and the whole organsiation makes is measurable, and long-lasting. It's been such a privilege to work with Michelle and Val and their team of volunteers and families.

Massive wrap to Nick from Picture House Collective for making this story shine and bringing my crazy ideas to life.

If you work for a not-for-profit and you want to work with someone who'll take the time to understand your organisation and create authentic marketing that you can be proud of, I'd love to have a chat, so shoot me a message.

Flashback to the 2017 version of The Marketing Side.

The first photoshoot, literally at the dining room table with all my devices and trusty notebook on hand.

With dishes in the sink and all over the kitchen bench in the background because I’d just got the kids off to school and I knew we would crop out the mess later.

Note the empty coffee mug in the pic of my keyboard that I used to launch my very first DIY Social Media course.

I didn’t have much of a clue about this business owner thing, but i did have a burning desire to help business owners and organisations create great marketing so they could help more people.

The last five years has been a wild ride. Yes, I’m looking at YOU, Covid

I can’t say I wouldn’t swap it for the world, because if I’m honest, I would. Lockdowns. Clients going out of business. Zoom fatigue. Canceled photoshoots. Financial uncertainty.

But 2017 Jodie has learned a lot. Underpromise and over deliver. The magic that happens when you find values-aligned clients. Learning that the customer isn’t always right. Having the guts to know your limitations and to say no. Ask more questions. Value people. Don’t sweat the small stuff. And that people might not always remember what you told them, but they remember how you made them feel.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned in business so far? Tell me so I can learn too!

If there's one thing every business owner should understand, it's this...

When it comes to purchasing a service or product:

🏆 You can get GOOD work

⏰ You can get things done FAST

💰 And you can get it CHEAP

What you CAN'T get? All 3 at once. You really have to choose two. As my aunty used to say: Pay your money and make your choice.

Pricing any service or item is always a balance of quality materials and expertise, your existing workload and availability of resources and also your value as a professional.
Whether you are looking for someone to build you a new kitchen, re-wire your house, service your car or design a custom piec of jewelery, the principle holds true.

If you want it CHEAP and GOOD, it won't be fast.
If you want GOOD work FAST, it won't be cheap.
If you want it FAST and CHEAP, it won't be good and on a side note?

It's probably not worth spending your money on anyway because in the end, you'll end up feeling disappointed, ripped off, disillusioned and cranky, and then you'll have to go to someone who has like, actual professional integrity, experience, runs on the board and the guts to say, 'Look, that's not the kind of work we do around here. Sorry. You'll need to find someone else'.

If you've been burned before, let me know the red flags you look out for now so it doesn't happen EVER again. đŸš©đŸš©đŸš©

One of our company values here is that we're not afraid to tackle difficult things...

If there's any subject that's difficult (and sensitive and CRUCIAL) to navigate, it's su***de.

So when local not-for-profit group Lake Macquarie & Newcastle Su***de Prevention Network came to us to build a website, I knew we were about to learn so many things.

How to communicate issues around mental health support and su***de prevention from a place of hope.

How to tell a person-centered story without using photos of people.

How to choose (and avoid) certain terminology.

How to build an easy to use site for people who are feeling stressed, sleep-deprived and overwhelmed.

We worked closely with the chair of the committee Brad and I'm beyond proud of the end result. You can read the full story on the blog. tinyurl.com/2239nhbn

In-person training events are one of my all-time FAVOURITE things to run.
I love meeting people who are passionate about what they do, and want to leverage the power of social media to spread the word. I live for the buzz of seeing the lights go on for people, answering questions in real-time and brainstorming content ideas.

Training shouldn't be boring, overwhelming or leaving you feeling like a dill.

At The Marketing Side, we believe training should be engaging, inspiring and deliver the practical tools you need to manage your social media confidently.

Interested in booking training for your organisation or business? I'd love to chat and see how I can help.

Even if you know what to do, unless you put that plan into ACTION, you're wasting your time.

Your cracking marketing strategy, strong message and incredible photos do NOTHING for you if they sit in your in-box, moulder in a folder on your computer or lie dormant as inspiring sentences in a Word doc.

Learn stuff. Implement it.
Learn more stuff. Implement that stuff, too.

THIS is real business growth. It's taking imperfect action, and moving forward incrementally. Learning over time, by surrounding yourself with people who are smarter and more experienced in their area of genius than you are. There's failure, and success, and learning new things every single day, week on week, quarter on quarter, year on year.

I get it. It's not super sexy. Hardly even in the same realm as the 'I made seven figures in 6 months using a lap-top selling air from my hotel room' kind of claims we see in our feeds daily.

Real life in business is hard and stretching and agonising and thrilling and exhausting and energising and fulfilling and draining and exciting. But if you get a new piece of information and take action on it- over and over and over again- it's NEVER boring.

It's what you DO with it that counts.

At our shoot with Maitland Region Community Support last month, there were volunteers in the kitchen creating delicious aromas and cooking up a storm, the truck delivering rescued food and produce to be divvied up in to food packs, and 10 parents and a playgroup full of babies and toddlers playing with a parachute in the outdoor area with bubbles and balls and ALL the outdoor toys singing Incy Wincy Spider đŸ•·

It was glorious mayhem and all in a days’ work for the dedicated team at MRCS.

Today, they are unveiling their brand new name and logo to the world. 🎉

As we put the final touches on their very first website, we just wanted to shine some light on an inspiring organisation that delivers critical services to people who are doing it tough in the Maitland LGA.

Stay tuned to check out their website when we unveil it but in the meantime, if you live in or near Maitland and you’re looking to support an organisation that’s going good work, check MRCS out. They are truly making a difference in the community and it’s our privilege to tell the world about it.

Lots of people start their own business because they want freedom.

For me, it’s the freedom to take holidays when I want and NOT have to ask anyone for permission.

So that’s what I did last week. Jetted off with my hubster and our good friends for a week exploring FNQ.

Since I did a Geography project on the Daintree rainforest in Year 10, I’ve wanted to visit. It took 28 years, but I finally made it!

Being in business has taught me a lot about myself and working with others, and it goes without saying that there are plenty of ups and downs.

The downs *suck* but the ups? They deserve to be celebrated and recognised so because THIS is the reward for hard work.

What does freedom look like for you? Holidays when you want them? Working school hours? Being able to coach your kid’s soccer team? Working a 4 day week? I’d love to know.
