Congratulations to with for receiving the Award for Sustainability Advancement at this year’s for their project Wilam Ngarrang Retrofit!

Wilam Ngarrang Retrofit is an exemplar of a truly sustainable approach to design that values and improves an existing 1970s apartment block, making it a very worthy recipient of the Sustainability Advancement Award. It uses what was already there and elevates simple yet joyful design through emphasising the positive impact it can have on the everyday lives of people. The jury unanimously agreed that this project begins and ends with sustainability, impressively standing out for its modest, considered approach to adaptive re-use and longevity. It successfully highlights the value in existing building stock by bringing it to life via a notable list of sustainable initiatives. The designers have set an example by making adaptive re-use and regeneration the primary consideration, while creating welcoming and comfortable human-scale living spaces.

Congratulations to for receiving the Award for Emerging Interior Design Practice at this year’s !

The jury was extremely impressed by Studio Shand’s interdisciplinary approach and the practice’s passion for combining objects, interiors and architecture into cohesive design outcomes. Established in 2020 by Benjamin Jay Shand, who studied architecture at the University of Sydney, the studio’s portfolio spans residential and commercial projects, as well as object design and sculpture. Despite only being in practice for four years, Studio Shand already has a strong identity and clear vision, which is very exciting. The jury unanimously agreed the practice has an extremely bright future.

Congratulations to .studio, the joint-recipient of the Award for Workplace Design in the for their project 477 Pitt Street!

This was a very diverse category that saw the awarded projects represent a spectrum of approaches, with 477 Pitt Street displaying rigour in the design and application of rich materials and detailed craftsmanship. It is a considered reworking of a previously dark and unsophisticated interior into a very welcoming, warm and textural workplace within the heart of the CBD. Big moves create intimate spaces, and the jury was particularly impressed by the large table, which functions as an anchor within a space that could very well have been left as a thoroughfare but now provides small pockets of comfortable working zones. Materiality is beautifully refined and celebrated, and the mixed program has been approached in a calm and considered way.

Congratulations to with , the joint-recipients of the Award for Workplace Design in the for their project Intermain!

With a huge variety of workplace entries to consider, the jury dug deep into the planning approaches, sustainability and cultural aspects of all shortlisted entries. Intermain truly reflects the diverse aspects of the contemporary workplace and displays a clever relationship between the studio’s own work and the craft they make.

The jury agreed that the project goes beyond what could have been a very basic refurbishment to become a celebration of rudimentary materials and the re-use of materiality to achieve a sustainable outcome. It is an unexpected pairing of workshop and traditional workplace that has created a very interesting union. Intermain promotes the re-use and recycling of materials, demonstrating how raw materials can be used in refined ways and how intelligent, robust design can create value in a project.

Congratulations to for receiving the Award for Residential Decoration with their project Von Leach Residence at this year’s !

Von Leach Residence gave the jury a real sense of the expression of its occupants and their personal values, which made the project stand out among the other entries. This expression comes out through the arts-and-crafts nature of the interior’s styling, as well as the more contemporary steel detailing, creating an appealing old-versus-new dynamic.

While the design may capture a personalised atmosphere, it is also to be commended for an economical use of materials that is sparse yet rich. From a sustainability perspective, the use of vintage furnishings and recycled steel pieces and reliance on local manufacture adds to the project’s striking success.

Congratulations to for receiving the Award for Retail Design with their project Song for the Mute flagship at this year’s !

Song for the Mute’s fitout stands out for its ability to create new contexts, while also strongly celebrating the existing context that it has been inserted into. It offers a unique retail experience through not coming into contact with its heritage shell, and it appears all the more innovative and contemporary as a result. The jury commended the interior design’s strongly theoretical approach, which demonstrates a lot of rigour, thoughtful consideration of materiality and great contrast with the existing shell. They enjoyed the adaptive re-use of the site, as well as the modularity of the retail pods, all of which display a considered connection with and physical embodiment of the brand. Song for the Mute’s unique use of colour and interesting juxtaposition between heritage shell and introduced forms add to the overall richness of the design and retail experience.

Congratulations to and for receiving the Award for Installation Design with their project Design Wall 2023 at this year’s !

In a very competitive category, Design Wall impressed the jury by demonstrating a strong graphic solution that engagingly brought viewer and subject together within a clear agenda of light touch and re-use. It was awarded for its different approach to exhibition design, achieving a zero-waste, leave-no-trace outcome while championing a cohesive visual language and curated educational display. It also stood out as an excellent example of a design team working collaboratively to realise the most genuinely sustainable and impactful approach to installation design. Design Week truly captured the spirit and ethos of the function it presented, and its captivating message and focus on education, along with complete adaptive re-use, ultimately set it apart.

Congratulations to , the joint-recipient of the Award for Residential Design in the for their project Daddy Cool!

As the jury commented, “The designers have worked a traditional terrace very hard through their exploration of minimalism in a playful yet sophisticated manner. As a result, Daddy Cool’s spatial planning is exploded to become a series of objects, with each object made to feel like a key piece of furniture or art. The jury applauded the story of the home’s occupants and the evolution this house will play in the family’s lives as the children grow into teenagers. Also commendable is the project’s impactful yet edited material application. The palette’s striking materials are not used across every surface, but when they are used it is extremely meaningful and to great sculptural effect.”

Congratulations to , the joint-recipient of the Award for Residential Design in the for their project Northcote House!

As the jury commented, “Northcote House is a genuinely exciting collision of technology, sculpture and the innovative use and re-use of different materials. The nature of the interior spaces and how they are occupied feels unfamiliar, inspiring some jury members to comment that they look forward to seeing how the house will be used in the future. Every space is unique, and the use of concrete is so innovative in how it has been pushed as a material that it almost becomes its own material type.”

Congratulations to for taking the Award for Public Design with their project Berninneit Cultural and Community Centre at this year’s !

As the jury commented, “Berninneit Cultural and Community Centre is a well-considered and beautiful community space that is light, airy and extremely welcoming. It has an integrated architectural and interior response, which amplifies the sense of connection with the outdoors.”

The jury applauded its high-level commitment to sustainability via a Passivehaus approach and use of mass timber, as well as its integration of First Nations design principles. These were brought into the project in subtle ways, without the use of overt figurative motifs, and represent a more understated approach that is particularly important and relevant to current ways of thinking about design.

Congratulations to , the joint-recipient of the Award for Hospitality in the for their project Reine and La Rue!

This project immediately appealed to the jury for the uniqueness of its site and the inherent challenge that comes with dealing with a heritage space. In awarding Reine and La Rue, the jury felt the resulting fitout inserted within the vast setting grounds the overall hospitality experience and achieves a sense of intimacy in an otherwise grand environment. Most notable is the impeccable detailing and the way it responds to the overwhelming scale of grandeur; only at the human scale and possibly when stationary does one truly understand the new datum they are immersed in. The shell is so ornate and traditional and the juxtaposition of the new insertion is sympathetic yet very contemporary. A lot of technical consideration has been given to heritage sensitivity so that no one element dominates and everything is harmonious.

Congratulations to .massive with , the joint-recipient of the Award for Hospitality in the for their project Purple Pit!

The jury loved this project because it is unapologetic. They applauded all the juxtapositions, the punk sensibility and the return of something very different to the dining and hospitality scene via Australian interior design. There’s a singular vision and confidence to the fitout, and it also looks very comfortable. The lighting is beautiful, and the designers have achieved a strong sense of sophistication and personality without using a lot of material. Of particular note is the art, which works to bring everything together, and the choice of industrial-style Flos wall lights that complement the interior design. The proportions and scale of the space are stunningly unified.

Congratulations to for receiving the Premier Award for Australian Interior Design with their project Northcote House at last night's !

As the jury commented, “This project stood out for the jury as it rigorously challenged each member’s way of thinking about residential interiors. Northcote House’s innovation and sustainability agenda, with every component of the home manufactured within five kilometres of the site, gave it an edge, making the project a very deserving recipient of the Premier Award. It is technically very impressive and boasts a seamless integration of interiors and architecture, which is also to be highly commended. The project’s innovative building technologies and processes have driven a unique outcome and as a champion of small footprint living, the house’s intimate spaces spark joy.”
