Great conversation starter show, starting tonight!!!

Have you planned your funeral, your final goodbye?

Chances are you haven’t, and you’re not alone. Only 1 in 5 Australians have talked to their family and friends about how they want to be farewelled.

Starting this Wednesday 14 August on SBS is ‘Ray Martin: The Last Goodbye’.

In this three-part series, the multiple gold Logie-award winning journalist takes a deep dive into the nation’s last taboo – death.

Like many Australians, Ray hasn’t talked about his wishes to his family and friends. And, as a baby boomer, in four years’ time, Ray will reach the average age of death – 83.

Through insights and humour, Ray looks at the way death is treated among cultures, religions and different viewpoints as he sets about planning his own funeral and how he is laid to eternal rest.

You can watch the trailer here - https://loom.ly/4WO3qic and tune in to SBS or SBS On Demand on Wednesday 14 August at 8.30pm.

In my work as a podcaster, I have had the great privilege of interviewing many individuals who have been affected by grief. Much of it, complex grief. What happens when a death is not “usual” or “expected”? What happens when things are left unsaid, you cannot be there to hug your loved on...

Hi all followers of
I have a project which is upcoming for which I want to ask a few specific questions and if you would be happy to reply there is a "send a message" button below. I'll also be asking this question on my Instagram page.

When it comes to Christmas specifically, do you feel guilt about celebrating, even though your loved one is gone? What are some of the other feelings which come about during this "family" time, or "celebration" time?

Do you have anything which helps you get through these days / holidays without your loved one?

What is something which people say or presume which drives you crazy at this time of year?

Do you have a special way of commemorating or celebrating your loved one, no longer with us?

If you do message back, you can request to be anonymous, I am going to be creating a podcast episode specifically to address "celebratory grief" and "Christmas Guilt". I would love personal insight from you, or, you could even share this page or the questions with others. Thanks in advance.

After interviewing 2023 WA Australian of the year for her research and passion into Palliative Care and Compassionate Communities Samar Aoun - I became very curious about Palliative Care myself and how we can start conversations around it. . . . . .

Have you had a look at the Palliative Care Australia Palliative Care WA Advanced Care Directives and Advanced Care Support Services? If you have loved one's at any stage of care, later life, even living wonderful free lives but beginning to think about "well what's next"? I implore you to check it out!!!

These cards are some examples of the conversations you can have about what is important to loved ones, if they become limited, or restricted in their daily living or older age. What are their morals, values and wishes? Would you really know, if you did not ask?? Have a conversation and offer this as a discussion with your loved one's because in the end, love is not enough, we need conversations about death, dying and LIVING!!!

If you haven't listened to on Audible or read the "real" book of Matthew Perry's memoir "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing", I implore you to do so. It gives a unique and raw understanding of addiction, how it is not just "partying" in Hollywood, how addiction crept into his every waking moment, his loungeroom, his very being. It's different to what we think of as partying.

I interviewed Julia for my podcast Hashtag Death in Episode 4 back in August 2023 (linked below). She discusses in a raw way also, how her beautiful brother was an addict and the effect it had on her, her entire family and how it pulled his life apart thread by thread. Self-medicating and compensating for elements of life which are often missing, understood through the words of someone so close.

Understanding that beautiful people can be addicts and how hopefully we can listen and read to understand, is a gift hopefully Matthew's memoir left and closer to home, Julia's ep.

Thanks again Julia for being so honest and real in your recording. If you haven't already, take a listen.

I think about death & grief & loss & love & how tangled & intricately woven these threads of connection are … a lot!

Death like life
like long open roads
intrigues me.

The mystery captivates,
the void fascinates.

To define what a “death doula” is, is really bloody tricky though because it is as vast as the sky & as full with possibility as a Sunday morning without a schedule.

The wonderful interviewed me for her rather rad podcast where we unravelled a bit of the WTF is a death doula mystery. Have a listen, link in bio if not below 👇
