It's hoped a new photo might lead to a breakthrough in one of Australia's strangest missing person cases. Since Marion Barter disappeared in 1997 there have been no physical sightings of her. The 7NEWS team behind the podcast The Lady Vanishes approached forensic criminologist Dr Xanthe Mallett at FHID (Forensic Human Identification) for help to produce a likeness of a 73-year-old Marion. A photo taken of Marion in the early 1990s was sent to a laboratory in the United States, where technicians work on a range of reconstructive projects; including producing a picture of what someone looks like using human remains and DNA material. In this case, they used dozens of markers on the face, combined with aging software to ‘best-guess’ how Marion may have aged. Many factors could affect this, including exposure to sun, illness, and injury. "I think it's important, obviously she is 22 years older and at that time of life to you are most-changed, other than when you're a baby," said Sally Leydon, Marion's daughter. "It's important that people have an idea of what she might look like, I don't think she looks like she did in the photos that we have prior to her disappearing." That said, Sally thinks her mother may have aged very well as her sisters have kept their youthful looks. Marion always looked younger than her years. In photos with her first husband, Socceroo great Johnny Warren, Marion looks like a teenager despite being in her early 20s. "It's important that we get some facial recognition out there just as a guide for people to be able to identify her," Sally said. The first episode of 'The Lady Vanishes' is now live.
