Townsville Cricket's aspirational goals for inclusive all abilities program.
For years cricket has been a favourite pastime for many Australians and now Queensland Cricket hopes to make it more accessible to all through their all abilities cricket program.
Queensland Cricket’s cricket manager north Antony Stewart hoped that a regular competition could be set up with enough buy-in from local organisations.
“Queensland Cricket has been working in the disability sphere for a few years, mainly at schools like Townsville Community Learning Centre, and it’s been so well received,” Stewart said.
“We hadn’t done a lot with young adults, 14 through to 25, and we thought there was a real opportunity there to not just give them an experience playing cricket or learning cricket skills, but maybe setting up a cricket competition and making it club-aligned here in Townsville.
“From the experience we’ve had at places like Bentley Farm, there really is a desire for it so we want to make that dream come true.”
Stewart said that if the program had enough interest there was potential to take all abilities teams to represent Townsville in places like Mackay and Cairns – or even Brisbane – with no out of pocket expenses to the players.
All abilities bowling maestro Kris Harber said he wanted to see more players give cricket a go.
“It was really good making new friends and learning some new skills,” Harber said.
Bentley Farm support worker Jorja Ede said you players instantly took to the sport after learning the basic skills last year.
“They love it, they look forward to it so much, every week they’ve been asking when we’re going to do cricket again,” Ede said.
“We’re really trying to get the word out there because we would love everyone in Townsville to come forward and join us for Monday cricket and then hopefully we can make an all abilities cricket club.”
