Professor David Walker is a neurosurgeon ,spinal surgeon, genius and father. He has a special interest in brain tumours and is actively conducting research to help find a cure for this insidious disease.

He is also in the Australian Army Reserves and when he is not doing brain surgery and saving lives you will find him unwinding with his other passion golf. On a golf course not hacking away but with an impressive handicap of 8 for you golfers. It is a year ago this week I lost my dear friend and previous podcast guest Paul McClean to brain cancer, so by chance this was a timely podcast with a brain surgeon.

It is an honest chat , showing you the real human who sits over the desk at a time in your life we all pray we never have to face. It takes grit and resilience to become such a specialist . I haven’t spoken much about my Mum’s journey with a brain tumour for the past 18 years to date. She’s so strong and doing really well . This is my Mum’s specialist, it is my honour to bring this podcast to you.

The book Dr David references is Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl I dedicate this episode to my Mum Gaye McGrath , Paul McClean and everyone who has been lost , suffering or being affected by a brain tumour.

On the lastest Episode of Pure Grit we have Geraldine Cox AM!

Geraldine Cox AM is a humanitarian , mother and author. She is extremely well travelled and has lived a very full and colourful life . Working for the Department of Foreign Affairs which she was posted all over the world.
It was her first posting to Cambodia when she was 25 when the country was in turmoil from the Vietnam War , it was this posting that she fell in love with the country and its children.
We all know Geraldine with her flaming red hair tied up in a chopstick surrounded by smiling children. At 50 she found her life calling and founded Sunrise Cambodia, an orphanage where she is Big Mum to hundreds of children orphaned or in abused situtations. Over 800 in fact. Giving them a home , love , safety and an education.
Geraldine reveals some wonderful stories and some horrific ones too. She is so honest , fierce and has so much grit. I have nothing but admiration.

People think the Sooshi Mango boys have come out of nowhere but they’ve been doing comedy since they were school kids. Their talent, hard work and persistence has paid off and they’re now one of Australia’s funniest and most-loved comedy acts. The trio’s rise in Australian comedy has been nothing short of meteoric, with their viral online videos amassing over 120 million views and counting. Most of these views came during Covid when we all desperately needed a laugh. On this episode of Pure Grit, the boys share how their hilarious interview with the then Prime Minister Scott Morrison came about. Their characters — most notably ethnic mums and dads — have made their way from video skits in their parents’ garages to television screens across the country and stages around the world.

Join me for part 2 of my chat with Kylie, she's unflinchingly honest as we talk about survival, new love, and new beginnings

27/07/2022

This is one of the most personal and candid episodes of Pure Grit yet. Kylie Moore-Gilbert is a scholar from Cambridge University and she was a lecturer for Middle Eastern Studies, history and politics at Melbourne University. Her University sponsored her when she was invited to speak at a conference in Iran. It was there her nightmare began…

Arrested by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for espionage. She was completely innocent. I followed her plight to be freed from the beginning. This is one mentally tough, physically tough and resilient woman whom I admire immensely.

Kylie is Pure Grit personified, surviving over 2 years of living hell (most of which was spent in isolation in a tiny cell). It’s hard to fathom surviving such torture.

She is now an author, her book is called The Uncaged Sky. Stripped of all basic human rights, her story is harrowing. We talk very openly about her childhood and what lead her to study the Middle East. Kylie is unflinchingly honest as we talk about survival, new love, and new beginnings.

Steve Pullen is a former Australian Ironman Champion, now a business owner and father. He started his professional career as an athlete at the young age of 17. I grew up seeing him not only in the Uncle Toby's Iron Man series and Nutri Grain Iron Man series but, at 23, he was crowned Australian Iron Man Champion. Yes, he was one extremely fit athlete.
Then I recall one day seeing him not able to walk and I knew something was seriously wrong. Steve was diagnosed with something so rare he was only the 111th in the world to have it and the 4th youngest at 38, it is called Poems Syndrome. Then, he was told he only had 2 years to live. He certainly pulled on his racing speedos and had something to prove. Now the race for his life.
Steve has an incredible story to tell ...... and a lesson to never give up.

Karen Jacobsen was destined to be on stage as she dreamed of being just like Olivia Newton John as a young girl and she sure did moving to New York and becoming an award winning singer and songwriter.
What she didn't expect was to go for an audition to record a text to speech voice system...that would then make her world famous ! " Siri" ' Is your name Karen?"

From that moment on she became a legend in pop culture and also has been getting us to our destinations and giving us directions via GPS all over the world . Karen is in over a billion devices. She is a business woman , powerful speaker, amazing singer songwriter and has just released an album. A delightful conversation with an incredible story which goes from losing it all to how you can start again and succeed.

Jenny Valentish is a very successful journalist and author, a former editor of both Triple J's Jmag and Time Out Melbourne. She currently writes for the ABC, The Age, The Monthly and The Guardian.

Jenny has done a lot of research into grit and resilience for her fourth book "Everything Harder Than Everyone Else" about people who push their bodies to extremes. For her research she took on the challenge herself and trained for a Muay Thai Boxing Fight which took place earlier in the year at the Melbourne Pavillion. Now that is immersing yourself in your writing! We are getting more obsessed with grit as a society. In this podcast we talk bout SAS Australia and why we love it. Jenny wrote a great article in The Guardian about SAS Australia.

Also in this episode, Jenny delves into the background of the reasons why some athletes take part in ultramarathons, bodybuilding and martial arts and how they push past pain.

Yasmina McGlone proves girls can do anything. She is what grit is all about. She was raised in Scotland and born with a rare movement disorder called Myoclonus Dystonia similar to a disorder we maybe more familiar with Tourette Syndrome .
Living with Myoclonus Dystonia makes simple tasks for us like sipping a cup of tea or coffee a very difficult task.
She was subjected to bullying in school, stares , harsh comments as she grew up. She just wanted to be a normal like everyone else. Yasmina took to drinking and partying as it eased her jerk. She is all about inclusion and has now embraced and is loving herself and has established her blog Living with a Jerk. Such an inspirational beautiful young women travelling and talking to children in schools about difference and excepting who you are.

Baby et Lulu are an Aria Nominated Faux French sensations
Abby Dobson and Lara Goodridge, they are a musical partnership seducing audiences around Australia.
Both have stories of overcoming life challenges with grit and resilience.

Abby Dobson started her career busking the streets of Paris, New York and Athens then shot to stardom in the late 90's with the the Aria's Song of the Year hit as frontwoman for Leonardo's Bride Even When I'm Sleeping, but what you didn't know was Abby was in agony and suffering at the height of her fame. Little did I know my 90's idol was suffering a private battle .

Lara Goodridge has a MA in French Studies and has been playing violin since age 3. She is also one quarter of ‘indie rock band that just happen to be a string quartet’ FourPlay who have performed around the world at venues including Carnegie Hall (NYC). Lara has overcome some huge battles with debilitating stage fright, anxiety and depression . Together they talk about their friendship, their 3rd album "Album Trois". 25/08/2021

At the age of 7 Moira was inspired by a video of Mother Theresa and from that moment she knew her calling which was to become an extraordinary humanitarian.
By 21 the ordinary girl from Melbourne had joined Mother Theresa in Calcutta. She has helped in soup kitchens in Johannesburg , with crack babies in The Bronx to refugee camps in Bosnia and so much more. Then began her self-funded program of arranging medical evacuations for children to Australia so they could have life saving operations.
Four of the 120 children who came into Moira's care have won our hearts Ahmed and Emmanuel Kelly both from Iraq and both overcame severe disabilities and multiple surgeries. Emmanel with a successful singing /song writing career and Ahmed a record holding Paralympian swimmer which we will see now in Tokyo, and Trishna and Krishna born co-joined at the head in Bangladesh they are known all around the world for surviving a 38hr surgery.
Moria has so much compassion and empathy and for her lifetime of service has an Order of Australia Medal plus a list so long of other awards including a Prime Minister Award, ANZAC of the Year Award and Victorian of the Year Award and many nominations of Australian of the Year.
She is the Founder of The Moira Kelly Creating Hope Foundation, and lives in a house of 15 enriching lives of so many. This is a Mother I have dreamed of talking with to get her mothering tips. Dreams do come true. Moira gives us so much and tells us how the twins are going now as teenagers and also her parenting tips. Its my honour to bring Moira to Pure Grit .

I have never asked my audience anything but if you could please give whatever you can please donate from the bottom of my heart I thank you Paula
