After driving like a really long way.. I got to meet Leeandra Norman who it turns out is a kindred spirit. I'm making a video on Lee Loves Cooking a local business in the Atherton Tablelands that my colleague Susan Yeeles Small Business Financial Counsellor has been working with through the COVID pandemic. But Lee and I talked non stop about living in PNG, diets, cooking, growing food, non neurotypical people, Western Qld especially Hughenden and the value of a service/servant heart.

You know you're working in outback Queensland in a heat wave when you start getting sweat patches on your shirt just sitting at the desk. And I'm not talking just a little I'm talking the kind builders get when they are erecting saunas in the middle of the desert at midday or I don't know like you'd get if you were playing golf in a tracksuit on the surface of the sun. Thank God I'm not out filming today. My hat is off to the manual, outdoor workers today!! And before you say it .... I know its a dry heat!!!

I've had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with some awesome professionals from the big smoke the last fortnight but it was such a highlight to work with lovely local lady snapper Lorraine Kath who will not appreciate this photo but I love it...her working creatively in her landscape with her friends cant get more rewarding...except if you get to work with her! Despite the tough conditions it was a great shoot!!

So refreshing to do a story with successful, knowledgable media business people who have faith there's a way to provide sustainable, even profitable local news service. Especially when most of the commentary is negative.

As a side note pretty cool to be back in touch with Pete van Boven - via my best friend when I was 5, and his brother Lucas Van Boven.

Best of luck new local papers!

One of the perks of being a journalist is being able to be there when the decision is announced, view the preview first, be let into practice runs and go behind the scenes. I always felt as a journalist I was often one of the first to observe, watch or experience.

Now that I also run a media consultancy, advising and supporting organisations to launch a product or experience or get media interest in their venture or issue, I realise that media advisors get access that even journalists don't.

One word of advice for anyone wanting to plan a launch from a comms point of view don't leave it too late to plan otherwise you will be limited on what you can offer the media - which is particularly important if you are rural or remote and the chances of getting the media to come to you are slim.

For I was able to provide a strategic media engagement plan, develop talking points, interview coaching, stills, footage, media release and other support for the launch of their new Luminescent Longreach light and sound experience - which is spectacular....and being one of the first to see it was very special ;)

I'm part of the duo (with Jayne Cuddihy) that produces the podcast There's an Elephant in my Paddock.

Here is why I went to my boss 18 months ago and asked him to get behind a podcast for the Rural Financial Counselling Service North Queensland.

Podcasting has been around for decades. In the mid-2000s I blew Wendy Bacon - my journalism lecturer's mind - when I wrote a paper about it.

Here's the online story of the TV story on tourism and wildflowers in Western Queensland. Lisa Alexander David Neal

Parts of outback Queensland have erupted into a carpet of native wildflowers after late summer rain in the region, but tourists are not allowed to visit them.

09/05/2020

I want to say this story was a pleasure to shoot and write but that would not be quite accurate... it was a pain to shoot I lost any creative idea of how to shoot a field of flowers that all look the same, I was very lucky to have a very talented photographer with me to consult with Lisa Alexander Lisa Alexander Photography. I burnt my retinas out looking at the setting sun for good lighting and returned home with prickles in my knees and backside from crawling around in the flowers. The tent shoot was easier but the shadows kept getting in the way and the wind was something else getting Qantas Founders Museum, Longreach, Queensland shots. I always find out in the field I lose my confidence I can't see in the view finder properly in harsh sun and nothing seems good enough. I often feel claustrophic like I can't see clearly. So it is a great relief to get out of the field and see what the footage looks like.

But it really is a true pleasure to deliver this kind of story that shows the outback at its best with inspirational people.

Safe to say I have a love hate relationship with being a video journalist

Last week 7.30 and Marty Edward asked me to head out to Amanda Amy Button and Hugh Vivian Button place to film for this story. Marty has done a great job taking the footage and weaving it into an important story with national impact. I get huge satisfaction putting people from my own community front and centre of national discussions about issues that affect their lives

Parts of regional and rural Queensland want strict coronavirus controls relaxed because there have not been any cases, but the state's Chief Health Officer says that is not going to happen just yet.

I've been working on this podcast for the past year with Jayne Cuddihy. It started as a panel program but has grown and changed into a three interview discussion and we are both happy with how it sounds now. Its very rewarding to work with someone else who is happy to change and finesse a piece of work into something you're happy to put out to the world.

This episode is a must for anyone in agriculture but especially for young women and the parents of young women keen on a life in agriculture.

Big thanks to Edwina Robertson for being brave enough to ask the question and Joy McClymont for helping with interviewee suggestions. :)
