A lot of people say Claud is crazy for spending numerous nights out in the middle of nowhere – miles away from any civilization. But Claud said: “I think I feel safer that way. I mean, you don’t see a lot of people; animals will only hurt you if you mess with them.” And Claud will take any chance she can get to roam and get lost in what nature has to offer.'

'In 1954, it became the Land Cruiser; then, in 1955, a second generation arrived – with more appeal to civilians. From there, the Cruiser morphed into three different series: the workman-like 70 Series, the flagship station wagons, and the smaller Prado versions.
Today, the trio of Land Cruisers are sold into 170 countries with more than 10 million produced over the seven decades. And, while some markets will see a 70th-Anniversary version of the 70 Series wagons and utes, the big news is the arrival of the 300 Series: a fair-size wagon which follows in the tracks of the 60 Series of 1981, the 80 in 1990, the 100 in 1998, and the 200 Series of 2007.'

'1963 FJ45 Bandeiranta Propotype - Back in the 1990s, Toyota’s head honchos — out to attract younger customers to the brand — settled on the idea of a retro-style four-wheel-drive.
LA-based Jonathan Ward — already known for restoring old Land Cruisers through his business TLC — was commissioned by Toyota’s Mr Toyada to build a feasible prototype after the fashion of veteran FJ models.
The TLC machines used a Bandeiranta body from Brazil, parked atop a stretched FJ45 chassis with this tan version in the museum running a six-liter GM V8. (The original Toyota Bandeirantas were versions of FJ Series models built from the 1960s through to 2000, most with Mercedes-Benz diesel engines and some with unique bodies, such as this four-door pick-up, for Brazil only.)'

'Time to head south of LA: where the overpopulated part of the state was at least a bit more mellow. The drive down was rather uneventful. The Rover made it down in one day with next-to-no issues: just a broken drive shaft, and a busted caliper — an easy afternoon fix. Classic- Range-Rover parts are abundant in southern California: that definitely settled down my anxiety of driving the old rig 1,000 miles away to a place I had never been.'

I’ve been working on them since I was a kid, and dad bought me my first when I was 15.” The father-and-son team overhauled the 1979 Series 3 SWB Land Rover together – building a mechanical skillset which Nathaniel uses to this day. “I know these cars like nothing else. As soon as I graduated college, I was dead-set on finding another Defender and turning it into a camper van.” His search took him to the coastal city of Exeter, where he found a derelict and near-stock 110 Van.'

That was an easy “no”. We were in the peak of COVID, and there was a real fear of being trapped in a foreign country. It was already the beginning of December, I had already scored on the mountain. I was restless! After a couple of freezing nights in the Rover, I dreamed of chasing clean waves in sunny southern California.'

This all began to change when vehicles like FJ40s, Series Land Rovers, Ford Broncos, Range Rover Classics, Unimogs, Pinzgauers, G Wagons, and International Scouts became cool again – and it was seemingly overnight.'

To get him to world-class climbing locations, he has his modified Jeep. In order to make it livable, he took out the back seats and replaced them with new flooring, a refrigerator, and a kitchen. He installed lights, power, solar, etc. His favorite modification is at the back: “It’s such a small thing, this little tailgate table. Which folds down and folds out.” A little bit of luxury in the middle of nowhere. A lift kit, of course, to cater for all the weight. The big thing is the Ursa Minor top: This allows Nate to stand in his Jeep to cook, change his clothes, brush his teeth. Also, it turns into his platform bed. But ... now he wants a van!
