Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your patience since we paused the production of Soul Tread Magazine. Since then, our team has been working hard to explore a way forward that would be financially sustainable for the not-for-profit and work well for the creatives who contribute to Soul Tread.

Although we had amazing support and encouragement during this pause, we could not find a way forward. The Soul Tread Board has decided to shut down Soul Tread as a Not-For-Profit June 30th 2024. We are looking at other ways to steward our mission through some other organisations.

Our Book Club will continue, and we will develop a new Soul Tread website that will provide resources for the church on sustainable faith, creativity, nuanced cultural engagement, work and faith, and analogue life/the reading life. Our shop will close, and all stock will be moved to The Wandering Bookseller / The Little Lost Bookshop where you can find back issues of Soul Tread (not many left!) and Monk Manuals.

This past financial year, I was doing a course with a group of leaders and entrepreneurs, and one of the participants had an image of Soul Tread making a new walking path off the beaten track, and that we've left a mark. This was a great encouragement, especially when I think of the ministries inspired by Soul Tread in millennial engagement and print media. I also think of the relationships and connections made, and how so many people were encouraged by reading Soul Tread during the pandemic and beyond.

While I am sad and grieving that we can't continue in the same way, I am thankful for what we were able to do and for all our readers and supporters.

As per legal requirements, as we close, all remaining funds will be given to a not-for-profit with tax-deductible status and a similar purpose. Christian Media & Arts Australia exist to see Jesus made known through media and the arts, and we have chosen to give our remaining funds to them.

We wanted to say a big thank you to our designer Matt, our writers, photographers, illustrators, and editors who all contributed to Soul Tread and made it beautiful and engaging.

And to you, our faithful readers:

This is what the Lord says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls." (Jeremiah 6:16)

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Blessings,

Rachael Lopez and the Soul Tread Board

SABBATH // SELAH

Psalm 92 is a song for the Sabbath day, it begins with:

It is good to praise the Lord
and make music to your name, O Most High,
proclaiming your love in the morning
and your faithfulness at night,
to the music of the ten-stringed lyre
and the melody of the harp.
For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;
I sing for joy at what your hands have done.
How great are your works, Lord,
how profound your thoughts!

Notice how attention is drawn away from our works and our deeds. “You make me glad by your deeds, I sing for joy at what your hands have done.” This is the song of the sabbath.

Work & Faith Wednesdays // Daniel from Hikers Brewing Co in Salisbury, Brisbane

We asked Daniel, how do you see God’s goodness in your work?

“Beer is one of the things in God’s creation that is so amazing to me. They way that we can take barley and other grain from the fields, hop flowers from their vines, yeast from our surroundings, and add water; and then from these four ingredients we can create literally hundreds of delicious styles of beer with so many different flavours, just by applying varying levels of heat, acidity, pressure, and other things along the way. It’s just astounding. And of course, in the early days, beer was fermented in open vessels by whatever yeast occurred naturally in the area, but now we have managed to isolate and propagate all these different strains of yeast and bacteria and harness their full potential, which is a whole other fascinating rabbit-hole. It’s the experience of these kinds of things in the natural world which further convinces me of intelligent design and the existence of God, and not purely evolution from nothing by random chance.”

An excerpt from our Deep Dive on Celibacy (Edition 3, Winter 21)

What is one myth you would like to be busted about celibacy?

"That it is about lack or self-repression. Celibacy is about celebrating Jesus and receiving the fullness of God's love in the Holy Spirit and making room for it in broader community expressions. While we feel a lack and a difficulty in giving up romantic or s*xual love, that isn't as central as the fullness we have received in Jesus Christ. You only give something up for the greater reality beyond it. You only fast from 's*xual' desire for the sake of the greater feast of intimacy in God's Kingdom." - David Bennett

"That it's awful and impossible, and that it's cruel to expect people to live without s*x. We can sometimes imagine that if someone doesn't have a romantic partner they'll be lonely and alone. Actually there's a lot of love in my life - it's just that we've got confused about what love really is and what it looks like." - Kate Wharton

Work & Faith Wednesdays // Jaclyn from The Storehouse Mt Evelyn ☕

"My favourite thing about The Storehouse is that we have created a community hub filled with connection and good will. We value each and every person that comes through the door. Throughout 2020, we were able to stay open for takeaway and our little store became a space for connection and togetherness. Every morning we had people come in who would receive a warm greeting and a sense of stability in their daily routine amidst life's uncertainties."

An excerpt from Christ and Cultures by Nathan Campbell
(Edition 7, Winter 2022)

Makoto Fujimura… suggests Christian cultural engagement should be generative — fresh, generous, and life-giving — through the deliberate introduction of beauty into the world.

Of the ‘culture making’ task, he says: “We turn wheat into bread—and bread into community. We turn grapes into wine—and wine into occasions for joyful camaraderie, conviviality, conversation, and creativity. We turn minerals into paints—and paints into works that lift the heart or stir the spirit.”

This notion of generativity might give us pause to imagine a Christian cultural engagement oriented towards the good and beautiful, not simply to justice, and embracing forms that express this character.

We have rich resources in God’s story to produce art, spaces, and embodied lives that are beautiful, and a long heritage of doing so within the church.

Yet, at the heart of Christianity there is a paradox that should transform our politics in a world where politics is about strength: the way of the Cross.

When Paul came to Corinth as an ambassador for Christ, “becoming all things to all people” to win some. He embraced a posture and strategy — a form — generated from the Gospel, not the city.

He rejected the Corinthian culture, their love for powerful, waxy-chested, orators making fine sounding arguments, and came in weakness and trembling, with a body broken as his message.

To our Soul Tread community,

In early 2020, Soul Tread began with a vision to help Australian millennials grow in their faith away from the anti-formative nature of technological devices. We have loved seeing our readership broaden in both age and location as so many of you embraced our emphasis on gentle orthodoxy and beauty.

As we head into economic changes post-pandemic, our team has realised that our current business model is no longer sustainable. We are prayerfully seeking a new way forward that will ensure our ministry can continue and grow.

Sadly, this does mean we are pausing magazine production until at least March 2023. We realise this is disappointing and we’re so sorry we couldn’t make it work.

If you are a subscriber to Soul Tread Magazine, check your email for more information. Our Book Club, Writing Workshops & Shop will continue as normal during this time.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of creating the first seven editions of Soul Tread - our writers, designers and illustrators, photographers, editors, interviewees, our Editorial Committee, our Board and our Donors. And, to our readers - thank you for choosing slow and thoughtful. You spur us on to keep going. We'll be in touch soon to reveal our next chapter.

Blessings,

Rachael Lopez (Founding Editor)

Sabbath // Selah

“When we practice Sabbath rest, we rehearse the activity that will occupy our eternal home; rest from our labour. We practice what we preach to be the hope of the gospel as a prophetic statement to a world of busyness, overwork and burnout. In the new creation, we’ll work too but it will flow from a place of rest in the presence of our Father, not a place of striving.”

WORK + FAITH WEDNESDAY // Tim Cooper from Coopers Brewery in Adelaide

"Brewing is an ancient craft; it is considered to have evolved in Mesopotamia in the 5th millennium BC, and its development may have occurred with that of bread. Every emanation of goodness in the universe reflects God and in some way is sustained by God. Jesus spoke about the Bread of Life, and the Living Water that never runs out, and life in abundance; he was referring to a relationship with God which starts while we are still here on Earth, providing we choose it.

Beer is a gift from God, and as with many other things that are gifts from God, people can misuse them when they are making up for what is missing in their lives. God wants the best for us just as I want to make the best beer for everyone."

We interviewed distillers and brewers for our Work & Faith column in our current edition.
