It’s here LIVE and IN• COLOUR

Hey FOLKS 👋🏾
After 48hrs of writing emails we didn’t imagine we would be 3 months ago— we’ve cancelled ALL our upcoming events. This includes the Issue Launch event as well as the BREAK exhibition at . All ticket buyers have been contacted and refunds are being processed
••
As we’ve said, none of these decisions are simple or easy and we, along with everyone are learning the best ways to support and care for our communities.
••
With that in mind, we‘ve made the decision to honour our existing contracts with artists, with an acute awareness of the impact this pandemic and the subsequent loss of work has had on the financial stability and overall well-being of artists and arts workers globally. We hope to see this best practice carried out across our industry and beyond.
••
For us, we’ll continue to highlight these artists (a fraction of which are in this image) and do what we do best. If you want to support us, or any of these artists, buy our merch, pre order the issue, share our stuff, get your friends amongst it— whatever you can, will mean the world 🌍.
••
That’s it from us. For now.
Look after yourselves and yours and see you on the flip side

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
We're sure you're aware of the COVID-19 pandemic's continued spread across the globe. In adherence to the Government's and health professional's recommendations of social distancing measures to we have made the decision to CANCEL Cancelled: FOLK Magazine Issue #2

Tickets sales have been paused and existing purchases will be refunded in coming days.
THE ARTISTS
Below is a listing of the exciting artists we had gathered for the launch event. Our hope is that you engage with their platforms, support their practices however you can and remember their names– because they're making some very exciting work.

The exciting and growing line up of local artists included:
Yawdoesitall
Becca Hatch
Carolina Gasolina

Alongside readings from contributors.

With an exhibition curated by featuring:

Nadeena Dixon

OUR PLATFORM
As a platform dedicated to platforming and showcasing artists of colour, we will honour the contracts and fees we had with these artists- being acutely aware of the impact that consecutive cancellations are having on independent artists currently. As an independent platform with government funding to realise these activities, we see this as best practice that will hopefully become implemented more widely.

As launch events are how most publications break even, our team would be greatly appreciative of any and all support. This can look like anything from buying merchandise or pre-ordering a copy of our upcoming issue to sharing our work with your friends and families.

As we physically distance, we hope you'll continue to be tuned in to our digital community- sharing work, art and musings on what it means to be creating in this moment.
Stay in touch via our website or on all platforms

Thank you for investing into the vision of FOLK Magazine and we hope you and yours are safe during this time.

Best,
The FOLK Team

Hey folks 👋🏾
••
It’s here. The decisions being made at the moment are neither simple nor easy. We’re eternally in awe of the resilience of artists and their communities while being acutely aware of the impacts these disruptions and uncertainty has on them, their families and communities.

With that, here are the updates:
•• will continue to operate, at altered hours (2pm-7pm). The coworking Space has been reconfigured to maximise space, with sanitation stations and regular surface cleaning implemented.
••And so, the exhibition itself will still be open for visitation. Do visit it and engage with the work if you’re able to.
••We’ll be integrating our public programming onto our digital platforms— we’ll come to you.👨🏻‍💻
••Encouraging rest and social distancing where possible. 🙅🏿‍♂️
•• At this point, our Magazine launch (March 28th) is going ahead. Look after yourselves over this coming fortnight.
•••••••
Hopefully through this we, as an industry and society, will be able to find creative ways of reinstating agency.

Allotttaa people are scared, alloottaa people need support. And that’s okay, let’s support them and each other — The a Folk Team

19 days and counting ☢️ we’re super excited to be bringing an incred line up of live artists to celebrate the launch of our second print issue. First up .doesitall
••
Sydney artist Yawdoesitall has been called “the true embodiment of the term renaissance". This high praise rings true for the young multi-disciplinary creator across music, photography and film. Yaw’s musical style brings together all his creative pursuits with a distinctive flare that bleeds into each body of work, always creating art that is multifaceted, but still uniquely Yaw.

What a moment to capture at the Shakespeare's Globe! and incredible initiative that has captured over 250 black womxn who work in theatre! Just Not That Many is another incredible initiative challenging narratives of deficit in talent or artists from diverse intersectional backgrounds here in Australia’s arts and entertainment industry!

‘WeAreVisible is something to celebrate, its unprecedented. We wanted to bring together all theatre staff and creatives across generations because we need to see each other... We aim to drive a new conversation that celebrates and acknowledges the important role black womxn have played and continue to play in Theatre and its diversity’
- Black Womxn in Theatre founder, Stella Kanu

Yesterday over 250 Black Womxn stood on our stage in celebration of their contribution to the theatre industry.

We have used the word 'Womxn’ as it is consistent with the name of the company, Black Womxn in Theatre, and the language that it uses.
