Afflatus Magazine Afflatus Magazine showcases Australian creatives, from photography, clothing design, artists, models and entertainers.

Afflatus; a particular type of inspiration in which the artist is left astonished from the divine source it came from. The ultimate in artistic muses, and the push to create the most amazing works of an artist’s life. Afflatus aims to present this divine inspiration, by showcasing Australian artists and their work. An annual publication, Afflatus features a wide range of artists, from photographer

s, painters, and tailors, to models, performance artists, and leather smiths. With features ranging from, spreads of work, biographies, interviews, and critical analyses, readers can learn not only about the work but also about the artists themselves. Whilst the title is archaic in origin, the themes are not. Tired of the traditional, academic, and mainstream themes, each Afflatus issue features a specific, niche theme, aiming to promote the art and artists that are ignored by traditionalists. The first issue ‘Ballgags, bruises, and bondage’ will showcase a wide range of art forms influenced, and for, the BDMS/kink scene. Whether it be restraints used in B**M scenes, sh***ri and rope art, or paintings featuring gimps and pups, Afflatus wants to promote you and your work. Launching in March 2017, Afflatus will be a print-on demand magazine available through Magcloud. Preorders will open in February for a lower rate. So get your kink on, be struck by inspiration, and take part in Afflatus.

Our annual write-up on Melbourne Alternative Designers Showcase is now up!
This year was the best one yet, but also sadly the last one. It was such a bittersweet night, but the fashion and art on display was beautiful!

Let us know what your favourite outfit is!

http://afflatusmagazine.blogspot.com/2022/03/mad-fashion-showcase-2022.html

21/02/2021

Had a fantastic time at yesterday's Melbourne Alternative Designers' Insights show.
Congratulations to the designers and teams, the producers, and everyone involved to make such a positive event!

We will be working on editing the photos by Slippery Photography and writing our annual review during the week, so you still get to enjoy the day; even if you couldn't go.

12/01/2021

Sad to hear that the M.A.D Fashion Showcase has been cancelled this year. We were looking forward to seeing all the local makers, and doing our annual review.
But we understand why the decision was made. Covid-19 has made events difficult and this shows that M.A.D is, and has always been, about community; putting our safety first.

We will miss you Carly and team. But we look forward to the show next year, and this online show that's been hinted 💜

22/10/2020

Sorry for the lack of activity.

Between lockdowns, work, and general mental health the past few months have had the team distracted and focused on other aspects of our lives.

Usually by now we would have post the next issue's theme and opened submissions. But for 2020/21 there won't be an issue of Afflatus.
We're not closing, just taking a break for now, and hoping the world settles a bit over the next year to come back in full force.

We still love seeing the art our community is making, and will try to be more active in sharing works and events.
So please let us know if you have any events or works you'd like us to share.

Hope you're all staying safe during these times,
Afflatus Team

She's just restocked, so you can grab your own!

RESTOCK ALERT! 🐙🐳🐠🦀🦑

Did you miss out on the pre-orders for the Underwater Utopia collection? I made a few extras 😁 and they just swam back to my website! 🌊 coral brooches, necklaces and hoop earrings are available in limited quantities - there are only 2 or 3 available in some colours!

I've used up all of the materials I had bought for the pre-order release, so it may take some time before I make pieces from this collection again - I'm really excited to start shaking up some cosmic bubble tea as part of the upcoming Stardust Cafe collection and start working on some new designs! 🌌🥤🧇🍨✨

Local to Melbourne? I also have a selection of my art wearables available in my cube at - 321 Smith Street, Fitzroy 3065. Supporting local artists since 2007 👩‍🎨👨‍🎨

Artist Feature: Liz Lytwynenko

Liz's feature delves into two ways art can help with anxiety and depression. Using their ball-jointed doll Pariah, the multi-disciplinary art forms Liz uses to bring him to life (painting, sculpting, sewing), can help ease their current anxiety; an immediate fix. Whilst the character himself, and the story they write for him, represent their long-term struggles; who they were, are, and the eventual recovery of where they want to be.

Artist Feature: : Dean Gervasoni

A poet form Melbourne, Dean's collection featured in the fourth issue of Afflatus: "'Gills’, ‘Jörmungandr’, and ‘Rebirth’, explore the struggles with, acceptance of, and overcoming of mental health issues. Water is a common element which Dean uses as a metaphor for mental health issues; something which can drown you, and is murky and dark to hide your struggles from the outside world. They also show an arrange of emotions felt by someone suffering from mental health struggles; despair, fury, and peace in acceptance."

Artist Feature: Katie Gray Art

"Through an obsessive observation and wonder of the surrounding world, Katie Gray’s practice acts as an uncanny expression of curiosities and queries. Enraptured by creating, Gray’s work is compulsively focused, often aiming to convey a narrative or concept through a magnitude of carefully considered elements within each of her works.
Her creative process often emerges in the form of writings, miniature constructs, illustrative diagrams and surreal stop-motion animations.
Gray is constantly pushing her boundaries of vulnerability and finding strength in examining the fragility of existence.
The internal private-self and the external public-self are often collided in strange and whimsical explorations, as both an introspective and espied form of story telling to navigate, share and reconnect to society."

The Afflatus team are currently in mourning.
Whilst we are still aiming for our current issue to be released this month, please have patience if we haven't responded to messages.

It's been a tough few days for myself and Eloquent Mx Loki.
Tragically Mx Loki's beloved bengal; Amber, passed away Tuesday evening.
She suddenly became ill on Friday and after the weekend of emergency vets and her regular vets where we had kept her stable, we finally got her to a Specialist appointment on Tuesday morning. But, sadly, it was too late and she went downhill fast.

I came into Amber's life when I met Mx Loki, and over time became someone she trusted. She meant a lot to me, and I will miss her.
