I nearly didn’t get this out for you.

I’ve been sinking into a hole of negativity - hard to avoid with the current state of play in the world (and we’re already starting from a high base of pressure as business builders).

But only 11 hours before it was due to hit your feed, I found an insight and a new energy to shift into that growth / positive / uplifted energy we need to have to build our dreams - and I’ve poured that into the latest episode of the Unemployed & Afraid pod.

If you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, paralysed or any other descriptive that doesn’t feel great for you right now - this one’s for you.

Let’s turn this ship around.

What is it about sunk cost fallacy that keeps us doing what we’re ready to move on from? I think about this a lot.

Not just because I’ve battled through pivots and changes and all the head noise that comes with it, but because I’ve seen it in so many people I speak to who might be right on the edge of making a pivot / starting a business / trying something random (AKA my inbox, which I love, an awesome side benefit of this pod).

Some people just have that give it a go energy - and it’s something we should draw ourselves towards - is one of those people.

She moved herself from a capital city (Sydney, my spiritual home) to regional living to chase her business building dreams - starting a talent booking agency called and redefining her industry as she goes.

When she talks about business you can hear her passion for it.

She believes in:
💰Pricing your knowledge well (amen)
🌟 Hiring up as soon as you can
💡 Finding your niche by just getting started

And so many more gems.

Hear her business story and just try not to be inspired on - links in the bio as I’ve still convinced myself I can entice you to stop scrolling IG and listen right now, or at the very least add it to your podcast feed, it you will absolutely love it.

We only see the success, we don’t see the bit when they’re a nobody.

Because most people don’t build in public - they wait for something to sell off then go hard. It makes sense, but I’d argue it sells yourself short, and does nothing for supporting those who are yet to get started

But the people who do build in public and lift others with their insights along the way - they are gems. I’d also argue they’re likely to have more exciting, sustainable and profitable careers in whatever they go after than the alternative.

Lucy Werner, who said the words I started this post with, is one of those gems.

Her story of pivoting, re-scaling business, building in public and not being afraid to start over is the perfect thing to hear of you have even an inkling of creating something new for yourself or growing where you are.

Lucy is dedicated to serving small businesses through her DIY PR business - Top 50 business newsletter on Substack - her best-selling books and more.

And she’s just as dedicated to keeping the story of how she does it, real.

When you listen to the episode you’ll hear about:
🧑‍🏫 How to move from expert to educator
🌍 The role where you live plays in what business you can build
✍️ All things Substack
🪞 The smoke and mirrors behind so many “big” accounts
🙌 Why growth doesn’t always need to be the priority
✨ And finding your motivational why

Building in public takes a unique kind of courage, or maybe just a special openess to feeling awks more often than not and going for it anyway, these are my people!

If they’re yours too, or if you just like really smart advice about building a business and generating PR, plus a stack of lols - listen to this podcast episode (link in the bio, or just search for “Unemployed & Afraid” wherever you listen)

If you’re in business, you’re thinking about making more money 💰

Cash flow, P&L, sales pipeline, it’s a constant cycle of thinking about how you can make more - but our ability to make money can face some tough inner adversaries.

Have you ever explored your money story? 🤔

Maybe you were always told that money doesn’t grow on trees? (my dad used to say that one a lot - probably because I was a little 💩 of a teenager and he was a business owner).

Maybe you didn’t always think the best of people who have money?

Or maybe, like me, you associate money with hard work and exhaustion.

Our money stories play a huge part in how we create wealth in our business, or don’t.

In the latest solo episode I (me, your host, Kim Kerton) share my current journey of exploring my money story in the hope that it helps you explore yours, sharing some of the things that have been holding me back from bringing in more wealth, and how I'm breaking down the barriers.

If you want to create more wealth and have a better relationship with money, this episode is for you - you know what to do - get it in your feed.

Here's under-estimated habit you end up doing a lot of when building your own brand and business:
The daily personal pump-up.

This could look like cranking Teddy Swims or Keli Holiday tracks to max volume and sing your heart out to the point of almost losing your voice (my current pump-up routine).

It could be spending some time with your favourite motivational read (or pod).

Or just having a quiet word to yourself (aka a 1-person staff meeting, also a favourite of mine).

However it looks, it takes ongoing pump-ups to get yourself in the headspace to tackle days that are often filled with hard, scary, mind-bending tasks, and do it day after day.

Motivation is built, it's not a given.

After 12 years in business, Kerri-Ann Hooper has this down to an art, and she knows the difference it makes.

She’s a high energy human that exudes the positivity and commitment to self-mastery required to build a business that can withstand the inevitably changing market conditions - and the changing internal conditions - as we grow to become the person capable of achieving our dreams, whatever they are.

In the sharing of Kerri Ann’s story of building you’ll hear about:
· Working through a slow cashflow cycle
· Building a business by pounding the pavement
· How to keep yourself motivated every single day
· What it means to have no Plan B
· And the power of colour in your personal branding

If you need some uplifting, inspiring, vibey story sharing about going the distance in business, this podcast episode has got you. Get the link in the bio, or on Unemployed & Afraid wherever you get your podcasts.

11/07/2024

I’ve been quietly dropping solo episodes on the U&A feed for a few months now - but I didn’t really want to tell you about them.

When it comes to guest episodes I can’t wait to share grabs, quotes, pics - all the good stuff - so that you’ll go and listen to the pure gold my guests deliver you every single week to help you build your business.

But when it comes to these solo episodes I do the bare minimum promotion, or none at all 😬

This, I think, is due to my inbuilt fear of:
Tall Poppy Syndrome
Being too much
Being too opinionated
Making it “all about me”
Appearing and feeling cringe
Being judged

Or a million other stories that I’ve told myself as a result of the culture we live in here in Australia, where those who are trying something new or are perceived to be “too big for their boots” are quickly cut down, eye-rolled, trolled, or passively aggressively unfollowed.

But when it comes to this latest episode it just doesn’t make sense - I’d be a hypocrite not to share it.

See I published a post on LinkedIn last week about my frustration at those who are employed “shuddering” to promote themselves, their work, or their ideas, and my deep regret of not doing more to build my personal profile outside of the companies that employed me.

That post struck a chord.

In the latest episode of the pod I went deeper.
Hopefully it will help you feel a bit more supported to make the change you want for yourself without fear and back yourself - publicly - before you have to.

Because as a business owner, you have to share who you are and what you’re doing with the world - it’s sink or swim.

Get access to the episode in the bio, or just search “Unemployed & Afraid” wherever you get your pods.

Hands up if you feel like you’re doing a Masters Degree in Business every single day while trying to build your actual business 🙋‍♀️

No matter what we’re building, or how quickly we want (or need) it to grow - it’s tough.
There are moments where we shine, and moments where we hustle like mad, and so many moments when we’re doing the work of 15 people but can’t pay actual other humans.

Suze, the wonderful human in this post, gets it - she’s lived it and is still living it.

When you listen to the latest episode of Unemployed & Afraid you’ll hear all about the value in setting your own pace, and strapping in from time to time, from the delightful Suze, Founder and Director of .mat

You’ll also hear about:

💡 Making a product that solves a problem in your life – and turning it into a business
🕵️ Starting with a low-risk model
👩‍💻 Learning the ins and outs of e-com and marketing
🤷‍♀️ Navigating wholesale without having a plan for it
🙅‍♀️ The reality of competitors and copycats
😵 The personal price you pay through the growing period
🤯 And the craziest story I’ve heard of a hell moment that almost destroyed Suze’s business

Loads of value and insight incoming for you, so don’t forget to add it to your feed (link is exactly where you’d expect it) and to share this show with your business buddies and in your stories - it not only shares the business insight love, it supports me, your host Kim, to grow it so I can keep bringing you more 🚀🧡

Don’t you just wish you could flash forward and know that everything will work out fine with your business idea?

Self-doubt holds back so much potential in the early days and kills so many dreams from even getting started.

We can’t possibly know all we don’t know yet, and at some stage have to trust that future us will know what to do, and at the very least will be able to figure it out.

Caroline Farrer and Kelly Riley know all about learning as you go - which was exactly how they approached creating - doing so as great friends who reside on opposite of the globe (so cool).

In the latest episode of Unemployed & Afraid, Caroline & Kelly share all the things they wish they knew, how they’ve grown to establish a successful business in partnership and why it’s important to back yourself from the beginning.

You’ll also hear about:
🏄‍♀️ How a desire for purpose kick-started an adventure
👯‍♀️ Finding a partner for the elements you need to make a business thrive
🤹‍♂️ The realities of designing and manufacturing a brand new product
🤷‍♀️ Managing the planning of a business when there’s no competitors to benchmark against
🔨 The benefits of DIY when launching
🔐 And the random skills you develop as a business owner

If you want to learn from people who’ve gone before, but who are still in the thick of it, and feel some solidarity and support in your own business endeavours, the podcast is the right place.

Mental chatter kicks your ass in business.

In fact, I’d place a bet that most people let mental chatter get the better of them whenever they’re considering doing something new or pushing themselves to go further - business owner, employee or otherwise.

It’s no surprise this happens - we show up in these spaces and see what other people are doing. We see the end goal of a business plan and website build as a perfectly polished idea, and we often see people doing the exact thing we desire.

And if I had a buck for every unhelpful tall poppy commentary I’ve seen and heard that goes along the line of “LinkedIn is a dumpfire of self-promotion” or “god they talk about themselves a lot on the socials, unfollow!” well, I’d have some serious bucks.

While it’s understandable how it happens, fear of failure and self-doubt kills too many dreams. You have to find the self-belief to chase your dreams and embrace your unique voice.

is doing just that, sharing her voice so that other’s can share theirs too. And she tells the story of building her business on the latest episode of Unemployed & Afraid.

In it you’ll hear about:
🤔 Exploring the curiosities that call to you
🏃‍♀️ Responding to the business opportunity that’s naturally there
🙃 Moving through the unknowns of business development
🙈 Turning away from competition
👩‍💻 When it’s time to stop consuming and start creating
💡 And challenging yourself to think bigger

And in surprising news, we didn’t even nerd out that much on the podcast industry, although it was tempting.

We’re here for all the small business stories and big business learnings to encourage you to build the business of your dreams.

Creativity is rarely uniform, neither are the majority of business models.

As your host I've done some hefty mental gymanstics over the years questioning a direction shift, creative idea, or new approach to what my "business" looks like. I put business in quotations because I've come to realise that word tends to make us think in binary terms about how the work we do for ourselves and the businesses we build should look.

is uniquely positioned to speak to both business and creativity. In the sharing of her story you'll hear about:

💪 The process of rebuilding yourself through business
🧠 Exploring newly understood neurodivergence
⛹‍♀️ Managing the constant context switching of business
💡 Reframing our approach to creativity for better outcomes
🤼 The helpful role of “critical friends”
🤸‍♂️ Noticing when something new is coming through
👩‍💻 And building the business model that works for you

Search for Unemployed & Afraid wherever you're listening or hit the link in bio, I suspect it will be exactly what you need to inject some inspiration, self-belief and fire into your business.

Where you start out in business, whatever the "thing" you're doing - it won't be the only thing.

Everyone will tell you that when business is challenging you need to diversify, but what does that actually look like in the day to day?

Adding new services, shifting pricing models, putting yourself out there in new ways, getting to the other side of imposter syndrome, these are all the things we do for nothing else but the sake of our business being able to continue.

If that’s where your head is at right now, I've got you.

Jen Bishop is an incredibly engaging human, and in the latest episode of Unemployed & Afraid she shares so much about the building and diversification of her business

In it you’ll hear about:
🤔Creating a business where the potential isn’t obvious
💸Getting comfortable with the sell
🎯Stepping into a new field based on passion
👩‍💻Never closing off from diversification
🏃‍♂️Task switching to an unprecedented level
🏆And being cautious of over-delivery (and over-discounting) in a contracting market.

Every week there’s an episode for you, something that's designed to help you keep going and building a business you’re proud of.
If you love it, make sure you’re following the show and tell someone else about it – it helps the show to grow and to continue showing up for you each week.

16/05/2024

Yesterday I recorded a conversation for you with two impressive business partners. They’re great friends, neither of whom ever really thought they’d develop their own brand and business, and they live on the opposite side of the world from each other.

Let me macro out on this for a second so you can see why this is inspiring me so much.

Each of them had their own careers in different industries, their families, their whole lives rolling on just doing their thing.

One of these wonderful women had an idea one day. An idea that came out of a very ordinary everyday circumstance where she told herself you know what, there has to be a better way. And if there’s not, maybe I can make one.

And that’s what she did. No knowledge of the industry or how to do it - just one step at a time. One of those steps was asking her dear friend on the other side of the world to become her business partner. And now they’re on the journey of growing their business one step at a time - you’ll notice I didn’t end this simple story with “and now they’re millionaires living on a yacht” because let’s be honest stories like that aren’t actually that inspiring because they’re so unrealistic and leave out all the micro growth, and if we get hung up on some sparkly end goal we actually miss all the gold along the way that actually keeps us in business.

Imagine just going about your day and then a conversation happens that changes everything. Or you meet someone new that changes your perspective entirely, or an email comes in - someone noticed that thing you said on a social media network and thought you know what, I must get in touch and start a conversation.

We all know life can change in a moment, and in a myriad of ways, but when it comes to business it couldn’t be more true.

Shifting your thinking from "what if it doesn't work out" to "what if it's all leading to something wonderful I never thought would happen" can be one small shift that makes a big impact on whether we stay in business, or not.

I share more about this shift and how I'm approaching it on the latest Solo ep of the pod. Give it a listen if you need a little spring in your business step this week.

If you’re in the grips of a business wobble - I feel you! This is for you....

When you’re building a business the volume of work you do and don’t get paid for is a strange experience to get used to. If you’ve been an employee you know what it means to be paid for the work that you do and the hours you put in - business is not that. It’s an investment into a future payday, that includes not just financial reward, but often personal growth and self actualisation, and work that means something to you.

But on the way to that you will be proverbially left on read regarding opportunities you really want and deserve.

You will be hoping that when you open your emails there will be an exciting new opportunity waiting for you, but there might not be anything except a reminder from your accountant about a bill 🙃 🫠

You will look at your growth markers and not be stoked with what you see.

You will look at your ideas and not know which one to start on, or if it’s ever going to be more than just an idea.

And you will definitely have a keen eye out for the people and businesses you put on a pedestal that all appear to be killing it.

What you can’t see (or maybe don’t look for in those moments - and I know this from recent wobble experience!) are the positive impacts you’ve made on others through your work. The people that are considering reaching out with an opportunity, putting your name in the room, being inspired by you, wanting to buy from you, and supporting you in their own way. The momentum building behind you.

Find a way to keep going - you’re closer than you think 💪

We apply a discount code unnecessarily to the value that we deliver to our clients.... I just had to read that again.
You might already know the story of the Citi bank logo development - in short the designer created it in the initial meeting via a sketch on a napkin, an effeciency of creation that took 30mins to execute, but which is only possible because of the 30 years of valuable insight to get there...

On a personal note - when it comes to my work in brand-owned podcast strategy I can often see the solution within a short meeting, something that's taken me 15 years of branded audio experience to be able to do...
..and so ensues my loathing of a conversation about hourly rates.

Jasmine Parasram aka knows all about this - she's a successful design freelancer and now pricing coach to thousands of others working for themselves - and geez she has some (hard-earned) insights to share that'll stop us undervaluing the immense value we provide in our fields.

On the latest ep of Unemployed & Afraid she shares the story of building her business, and we cover:

💫 The magic of a small following
💥 Navigating rejection
🗨 Defining success through impact
🏃‍♀️ Making a safe exit into entrepreneurship
👨‍🏫 The benefit of teaching from your experience over facts
💰 And the myriad of ways we can charge for our services to make what we’re worth

Say hi to Garry the Gecko - he’s inspired the latest episode of the Unemployed & Afraid podcast (huh? yupp 🤣 stay with me here... )

If, like me, you’ve been experiencing a strange sense of analysis paralysis and procrastination on the actions in your business that are fundamentally important (e.g. making money!), despite having great ideas and intentions, then you probably also feel just as frustrated with yourself as I have.

I was given some advice recently to start messing s**t up in my business.
To make a proper mess of it if I need to - whatever it takes to move rather than stay stagnant - trusting that the ability to adapt is already there and that it’s simply not important to have it all “right” or “perfect” before taking an action.

This advice was well received, and quickly forgotten in the chaos of the day to day, that was until Garry came to visit my office and I got all woowoo on the spiritual meaning of the gecko... 🦎

Inspiration can come from the most random of sources, but what stands true is our ability to channel the inner Gecko.
It’s fine to sit still for a bit, necessary even, but then it’s time to run like hell at what we want without fear, trusting that we’ll adapt (e.g. like how Garry can drop his tail to survive, that analogy has legs... pun intended).

Hear the full story and inspiration from Garry in the latest episode - on the Unemployed & Afraid podcast channel wherever you listen.

The people claiming they can show you how to make more money in your business will only ever get you so far - you have to believe in your own ability to create opportunities and make bank.

That comes through getting skin in the game.

It comes from ensuring your ideas don’t stay stuck in your head in a perpetual planning cycle trying to get your offer “just right.”

It comes from trying, tweaking and trying again - and eventually, you will learn to trust yourself to do what you need to in your business.

This is the core of an entrepreneur no matter the level or field - it’s this and so much more that and your host get real about in the latest episode of

If you’re ready to hear about:
🙅‍♂️ The decisions we don’t need to labour over
💡 Why figuring it out on the job is an excellent strategy
💲 How to not over-complicate making money
🥀 Reframing the Australian tall poppy syndrome
🌟 And the radical potential you have within self-employment...

In a corporate environment, I (your host, Kim 👋) used to feel deeply uncomfortable saying I didn’t know the answer or solution to a problem.

Maybe it’s because there’s often people jostling for your role, or because you’re jostling for something “better” and don’t want your professional brand tarnished (or the boss to feel disappointed by you).

Which all feels a little ick when you lay it out like I just did.

In a business ownership environment, you don’t get a lot of choice in the matter - there’s just so much you don’t know, and often so much more riding on your answers and solutions to a problem.

This could be why people who know both sides of the employment coin are some of the most valuable contributors out there...

Have you ever heard of a portfolio career?j.cox of (and more!) has coined the term to describe the work she does, which brings together Business Ownership (across various companies) and Board Directorship (across various companies).

Michelle chooses work which is values aligned, contribution focused and deeply interesting, and she never (ever) shies away from asking questions, confidently owning what she doesn’t yet know and asking for help - always finding the answers she needs to do her best work.

She’s my latest guest for you on the Unemployed & Afraid podcast and we get into some deeply valuable conversation, you’ll hear about:

💻 Learning on the go, at all levels
💡 Letting contribution be your guiding light
💰 Our relationships to money
⚖️ The balance of multi-passions with laser focus
🧘 And the role of self-awareness and presence in business

Listen to the chat wherever you pod - or jump in now via the links in bio - I guarantee it’ll get you thinking.
