across the country are ! Reports are coming in from market owners across the country that small are starting to ask for stalls on the .

Due to the downturn of spending and profitability and the increase in wage demands, small businesses are bringing their products to larger audiences to local markets across the country.

This is great for the , customers and fellow stallholders…but it’s also great for those who are really benefiting from the increase in turnover and confidence that they get by being seen at their local Market Place.

Its also working for service industries like window cleaners, locksmiths and particularly and caterers!

Have you any success stories to tell? Or any thoughts on the future of markets in general?

We would love to hear and share your thoughts!

Get Ready for a new market at Central Park, Chippendale!

Central Park Farmers Market - Call for Expressions of Interest - commences Saturday, 15 April 2023

Organic Food Markets are delighted to announce that a new weekly Saturday market will commence on 15 April 2023 at Central Park, Chippendale. On Broadway, adjacent to several universities and extensive new residential development, this area has provided a home for many successful markets, including Carriageworks and Glebe.

They are looking for expressions of interest from vendors who would like to set up a stall (certified organic and conventional fruit & veg, bread, cheese, meat, etc. and hot and value added food). They especially welcome farmers who grow their own produce.

Supporting stalls selling non-food items from jewelry to fashion, and alternate therapies to massage are welcome.

Permanent stall fees for fresh food stalls start at $155 for a 3 by 3 and for non-food at $120. Catering stall fees are $175. Power may be available at $30 per plug in.

Secure your place on 15 April. To book email [email protected] or phone 9999 2226.

Lots of our markets in Australia have closed due to covid 19...sadly some will not be reopening.
Do you know of any ‘closed forever’ markets?

NON FOOD MARKETS...

Whilst there are no fundamental barriers to holding a non-food market in NSW. The market must have a COVID Safety Plan and a format can be found here:

https://www.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-07/covid-19-safety-plan-non-food-markets.pdf

Market organisers can use this form to prepare a COVID Safety Plan for their business and it is self explanatory.

Then notify NSW Government before you can display the COVIDSafe tick.

The problem arises from the legal requirement to able to limit the number of people on a market site to one per four square meters (Clause 8 of Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order (No 4) 2020).

In theory there is nothing difficult about this. If for example you have a one acre market site (4000 square meters), the rule can be applied to calculate that you cannot have over 1000 people on that site.

The problem is…how do you demonstrate you are complying?

If the site is fenced and gated, you can man the gates and have some sort of central counting in and counting out system and stop entry at 1000 people in total. Obviously this is relative to the size of your market site!

If the site is not fenced and gated, is it even possible to implement the COVID Safety Plan for the market? Miscalculating this may leave the event organisers open to severe penalties.

Earlier this week we heard that the annual French Market that was to be held in Sydney last weekend, was cancelled by the organiser the day before the event, following being told by the authorities about the huge fine that could be applied to her ($50,000) and an even greater fine ($100,000) that could be applied to the landowner, if the event failed to comply with State law.

Obviously every market operator must do their own due diligence in their State.

Good luck!
