Opinion Piece
The resignation of QPS Commissioner Katarina Carroll today leaves a sudden leadership vacuum in the Police Service.
While there are already names being offered as a possible replacement, it is vital the decision on a new commissioner is not a rushed one.
Her resignation comes at a time when the QPS is facing community criticism, rightly or wrongly, for its responses to issues including domestic violence and youth crime.
Youth crime is a broader issue than purely policing, government policy is a major aspect of the overall response, although there are calls for a greater police presence on the streets, actually walking the beat, a policy that seems to be out of favour currently.
Undoubtedly, there will be calls for a 'beat cop' to be elevated to the top job, and while that carries weight, the reality is the role of Police Commissioner is as much about management and policy setting as it is about hands-on policing.
The successful candidate must be capable of managing not just the political aspects of the role, but also politicians, and securing sufficient funding to properly resource the QPS, now and into the future.
But they must also be in touch with the wishes of the community, the desire for police not only to be present, but seen to be present, as an active and visible deterrent to crime, in all its forms.
There is also a need for the new incumbent to be given a proper opportunity in the role, with time for their policies to take effect and results to be properly measured, rather than demanding results in impossibly short timeframes.
We wait now to see the outcomes, and hope the community, ultimately, is the winner.

This is a post by Somerset Regional Council.
This is one of the many reasons we are asked to repeat the ‘if it is flooded, forget it’ message.
This is what happens when flood waters get under the road surface and erode the road base.
It doesn’t matter how big your vehicle, or how talented you are, you drop into that, you are not coming out without help.
There are many roads around Logan that were just as flooded, so not ignore the road closed signs. It will happen to you.
Please share to your friends.

As flood waters recede we are getting a clearer picture of damage across our region.

This stretch of road on the Brisbane Valley Highway south of Geoff Fisher Bridge and north of Fernvale has suffered substantial damage and will be closed for some time.

Council is now looking for a safe alternative route to detour around this hazard.

A good reminder that if it's flooded, forget it.
