What are your thoughts?

The Knights have signed a pair of Super League young guns, Kai Pearce-Paul and Will Pryce, after the duo stunned in England’s top flight.

The pair will join Newcastle ahead of the 2024 season after fulfilling their contracts with their current clubs, signing a two-year deal with the Knights.

Pearce-Paul, 21, has been one of Wigan’s best players since making his debut in 2020 and was earmarked as England’s version of Sonny Bill Williams.

Standing at 196cm and tipping the scales at 104kg, Pearce-Paul plys his trade in the backrow and scored for his country at this year’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, Pryce is the son of former England legend Leon Pryce and plays at both five-eighth and at fullback.

The 20-year-old has been one of the Super League’s most dangerous players since making his debut for the Huddersfield Giant in Round 12 of the 2021 season.

Pryce’s signing could see Kalyn Ponga make a permanent switch to the halves, with the young gun slotting into the No.1 jersey when he lands in Australia.

“These are important signings for The Knights,” Knights director of football Peter Parr said in a club statement.

“We are very excited to be able to attract two of the brightest young talents from Super League to join our club.

“We believe both players have a skillset that will make an impression on the National Rugby League once they arrive.”

Knights director of football Peter Parr has challenged Kalyn Ponga to stand up and own the team and wants to turn the Newcastle club into an NRL powerhouse again.

In a wide-ranging interview with Sky Sports Radio’s The Big Sports Breakfast, Parr wants to emulate what he did at the Cowboys and restore the Knights as one of the best clubs in the game.

The criticism of Knights skipper Kalyn Ponga is that he has been unable to emulate his stunning form for Queensland at Origin level and transfer that to Newcastle on a consistent basis.

Parr wants his captain to take on more ownership of his own performances and that of the team in 2023 and beyond.

“I think that is something that Kalyn is well aware of,” Parr said on The Big Sports Breakfast.

“His form for Queensland is impeccable and he plays those games like he wants it more than any other game he has played in.

“I think when you watch someone like James Tedesco, he plays like that every weekend.

“I think that is where Kalyn needs to get to. I think that is where Kalyn would like to get to.

“I know he has a great desire to get more consistency in his footy. He knows what he is capable of and he also understands that he hasn’t done it on a consistent basis at club level.

“I think he is getting to the stage of his career where he needs to start owning this footy team.

“It has got to be his team a bit like Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Andrew Johns, Darren Lockyer, they all owned the team.

“I think that is where Kalyn has got to get to. He is still only a young man, but I think now he is getting to that stage of his career.”

Utility-back Simi Sasagi will be unavailable for much of the first half of Newcastle's 2023 NRL campaign after undergoing surgery to repair an injured shoulder.

Sasagi underwent a full reconstruction on Wednesday after injuring his left shoulder during pre-season training in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old Kiwi, a fancied prospect at the club over recent years who came along last season making 14 appearances, will now be forced to embark on a six-month recovery period.

That time-frame, barring no delays, would likely rule him out for at least the first third of the season.

Newcastle will have played 11 games by the time six months comes around.

The injury is a big blow for Sasagi given his development and for coach Adam O'Brien so early in the preseason as the Knights work to improve on last season's 14th placed-finish.

Newcastle dealt with an injury crisis early last season and will be hoping to head into their next campaign with much healthier depth across their playing roster.

Sasagi, who has made 16 career appearances, played 12 of his 14 games last season off the interchange bench but with fullback Kalyn Ponga poised for a switch to five-eighth in 2023, he may have had a decent chance of earning a start in the back-line.

Joey predicting BIG things in 2023 from Kalyn Ponga.

“(Hastings) is an on-ball old-fashioned halfback who just follows the ball and gets his hands on the ball as much as possible,” Johns said.

“Which then frees up Kalyn to go anywhere and play, look for opportunities and communicate to Jackson to get the ball off him.

“I know Kalyn will be one of the best attacking five-eighths in the world. I’ve done bits and pieces with him. Last Friday I was up there... he’s just all class.”

“I think he goes really well,” Johns said, “he went to England to learn his trade and he’s come back a tremendous player.

It’s common knowledge the Knights are in the market for a halfback and a meeting last week might have revealed their plans. Wetsts Tigers star Jackson Hastings and his manager Liam Ayoub have been spotted in Newcastle. They were not there for a holiday or to check out local real estate, either. In fact one very good source has told Phil Rothfield the pair caught up last week with a man who was the spitting image of Knights general manager of football Peter Parr.

Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens insists Brooks will not be released.
Hastings, however, is a different story. Sheens is not a fan of Hastings. He even asked caretaker coach Brett Kimmorley to move Hastings to lock forward last season.

Knights assistant coach Andrew Johns is a big fan. “I think he goes really well,” Johns said, “he went to England to learn his trade and he’s come back a tremendous player. “I did some work with him years ago at the Roosters. “I found him to be a really respectable young fella. “It’s hard for a young halfback at a club with big personalities. It can be intimidating.”

He is under contract at the Wests Tigers until the end of next season.
