How's your emotional bucket today? What does that even mean?

It's easy to get swept away in a good analogy (just ask Andy, he loves his markers in the sand and deck chairs!) but how does it actually fit your story?

Derrick McManus, talking about Human Durability on Reframe Of Mind explains that our bucket also contains processing space for what's being thrown into the bucket. If we fill the bucket up too much, we enter a space of overwhelm and find it difficult to process much at all, if anything. Maybe we 'snap'.

So what are some things you can do to keep that processing space available? Might it be making strategy for something speicific? Could it be making a list of things you need strategies for or simply to come back to later when you know you will have the energy to pay attention to it?

We all have something to live for.

Our own mortality is something we probably don't often think about, until we're confronted by something like the death of someone close to us or life-threatening event.

If the stakes were high, what's the one thing you would focus on to keep you focused on pulling through?

Derrick McManus has been in this situation and has developed a whole program around human durability. We don't need to become pesimists in order to truly prepare for the worst. It might just be the thing that saves us.

Have you considered that your comfort zone is where you are the most durable?

When we make a contingency to be able to bounce back after a crash, we usually consider bouncing back from the very basics, which is a point of fragility.

Derrick McManus speaks in this episode of Reframe Of Mind about enjoying our comfort zones and making making them our safe place to slide back into as we step out and try new things.

Failure does not have to entails starting from scratch all over again.

We all have a part to play in bringing about equitable change for women.

Part of our commitment to that is in amplifying the voices of women in our programs.

Here are some of the insights they've shared with us so far in Reframe Of Mind (episodes 1-13).

Let’s celebrate the women in our lives today, wherever they are and whatever they do.

But let’s also make a commitment to play our part in breaking the bias that exists, and let’s follow the lead of women in doing so.

A shout out to Brene Brown, whose work shows us just how important vulnerability is, and Derrick McManus has a lot of experience in his own journey of vulnerability.

Those of us old enough to remember PM Bob Hawke will remember the ribbing he got from people far and wide for publicly crying, but that act of expressing emotion is important to reduce stress and to help us connect and relate to each other, which is a much stronger position than "nah, I'm right thanks."

If you saw the white light, could you seize onto something tangibly possible to give you the hope and optimism you need to pull through?

Derrick McManus talks about his experience lying on the ground for several hours, knowing that his body was shutting down as he waitind for someone to be able to come and help him amidst the danger of gunfire.

We may never, hopefully, ben is that situation, but are there other circumstances in which you know optimism might help to keep you going?

We’ve all either been through sustained high stress in the workplace or known someone who has, and when we’re encouraged to bring “all of ourselves to work” it usually contains an unspoken parenthesis with the words “except that bit”.

So what happens when the stress becomes so unmanageable that we start to burn out?

How accountable are workplaces for providing an environment that promotes good mental health? And where is the boundary between workplace stressors and those that can too easily spill in from everyday life?

In this episode of Reframe of Mind, Louise and Andy explore their own experiences with stress and burnout in the workplace with some food for thought from their previous guests Sally Goldner AM, Suzanne Mercier and Hugh Kearns while introducing new guests Jane Madden, Board Member at Black Dog Institute and Workplace Pattern Interruptor and author, Annie Harvey.

Episode 10 of Reframe Of Mind is out now!

Sally Goldner AM is a strong leader and advocate within her community, and has enormous strengths any good leader would aspire to. She’s been advocating for change long before keyboards became the fertile ground from which we shout. Sally first disclosed as trans in 1985, at which time it had only been seven years since the first Mardi Gras in Sydney, which in 1978 was actually a protest march.

In 1999, Sally became a founding committee member of what became Transgender Victoria which, in 2013 was a major contributor to additions to the federal S*x Discrimination Act covering gender identity, sexual orientation, and intersex status.

In this episode of Reframe of Mind, we talk with Sally about the importance of embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace, as well as in the broader context of life.

And Professor of Entrepreneurship, Alex Maritz, from La Trobe University shares the truth about senior-preneurs and late transitions to self-employment and busts the belief that ‘old dogs can’t learn new tricks’.

NSW Young Australian of the Year, Nathan Parker dreamt of becoming a fighter pilot for the Royal Australian Air Force from the time he turned six. He was on the way to that dream when a bus accident left him severely injured resulting in the amputation of his left hand. Nathan was the first upper-limb amputee in the history of the Australian Defence Force Academy to complete his final 12 months and graduate, and has since represented Australia in sports bringing home gold at the Invictus Games.

With the aid of his bionic arm, Nathan reached his goal of becoming a pilot, and now teaches others to fly as well.

In this episode of Reframe of Mind, Nathan tells Louise and Andy about his ‘make one consistent small choice to move forward’ philosophy and takes us along his journey of recovery, from which he wants to continue to share his message of resilience and assist, encourage and inspire people everywhere to transform their toughest times into their greatest opportunities.

After returning home from a military trainee exercise, the bus Nathan Parker was on rolled over, and he was trapped for an extended period. Eventually he needed to be airlifted to hospital and was in a critical condition.

That accident left Nathan as an amputee with a long road of recovery ahead of him and a question over whether he’d ever fly again.

And now with the aid of his bionic arm. He does! Not just that, but he teaches others to fly as well and helps disadvantaged youth.
