My story, your story

What does social media marketing mean for your business? Social media is simply a communication tool that can help potential clients find your business. It is a cost-effective tool, that we can test and measure, every step of the way, to ensure your target audience finds you. Snap ... me too! That's why my purpose is to help small business owners to share their passion with t

heir people, their community, so that everyone wins! A little about me ... a marketing communications media specialist of more than two decades across radio broadcasting, publishing and the public sector; I have finally decided to take the plunge, share my skills, and start my own business. An early adopter of Facebook, joining in 2007, I have always enjoyed the social networking aspect, which comes very naturally to me and suits my personality. In fact, I remember while living in London (the quintessential young Aussie thing to do), I was also an early adopter to email, with free platform Hotmail on offer in 1997. I was busy setting up accounts for all my Antipodean mates, so we could stay in contact while travelling. Although, I am well and truly a Gen Xer, social media has been my bomb from the very beginning. Professionally, I have focused on social media management for the last decade with roles across various government agencies and small businesses. I have kept current across constant Facebook and social media changes and trends with training and workshops from nationally and internationally recognised training providers, such as Social Media Knowledge (SMK) and Association for Data-Driven Marketing and Advertising (ADMA). As we know, the one certainty in life is change; I make sure I am across all the changes across social media, so you don’t need to. I also believe my radio career as both a producer and broadcaster; and publishing career as a writer, editor and managing editor; has resulted in my absolute belief that stories can change lives. Your story can change a person's perspective or let someone know they're not alone; stories are powerful ways to resonate with your community. These previous careers have also taught me to identify different angles of a story to best communicate and engage with an audience for the best results. Whether that's to come to your event, buy your book, or product, or engage your service. My mission is to help fellow small business owners to find their people, their community to benefit from your product of service. Now, it's time for your story. It's your story, your passion, your drive, that your people ... your community needs to discover that they need. Gen Social can help you find your people, help you grow your business. I don't know if it was the fact that it was the first movie I can recall or that I was so young and so enamoured by it all or that my bestie across the road had ALL the toys and ALL the merch at 9yo. Whatever the reason, there's nothing I love more than some cheesy merch. The cheesier the better. It's the small things, amiright? What's the cheesiest merch you've picked up? This one a Christmas gift from my brother, it was. May the force be with him.

"Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women."

This I am thinking of women like Grace Tamer and Brittany Higgins standing up, angry, sharing their experiences of sexual abuse at the Press Club speech and wondering how far we've come. The fact that the abuse happened to one as a child and the other at the highest echelon of power in our country captures the broad spectrum of abuse still inflicted daily on girls and women.

And the past two years of a pandemic that have seen women at the front line of health services and aged care support now burning out. Or losing their jobs in retail and hospitality and trying to reskill and re-enter the workforce. It's a glum picture. So, where to from here?

We stand up, we call out the and when we see it. We get angry, like Grace Tamer and not apologise for it, but embrace it. Be proud of it. Nurture it. Things need to change, so much more than before, because I think we all see it now. The , the absolute unnecessary and fearful reasoning of those that don't give women a seat at the table. The right to make decisions and influence at all levels of power. We must stand up. We must be heard. We must take action.

Never seem to get photos of just me, mum and my bro. Between family commitments, care responsibilities for mum, and just life in general, this is one of the few times, I recall, we took the time to go out for lunch. Just the three of us.

Since dad passed more than 8 years ago and my other beautiful brother Andy coming up to 30 years ago now (he was only 19yo) - our family unit has significantly reduced. Except, of course, for my brother's 3 beautiful children. The next generation. Bless them. ❤❤❤ But the family unit I grew up with, all that history and time spent, the family friends, experiences shared, stories, travels, decisions made, conversations had ... slowly disappearing. Like tears in the rain, as one prophetic dystopian character would say.

So, remember to hold your loved ones close, tell them that you love them and savour every precious moment. My reflections as the storms subside (hopefully 🤞🏾🤞🏾) in not-so-sunny Queensland. Be safe, friends. 💞

Wonderful day 4WD-ing at Bribie - fun with friends - swim in the ocean, walk on the beach, chilling on deckchairs.

I know I mention it often, but the beach really is like therapy for me. Always puts things in perspective, the fresh, salty, beach wind blows away all the worries of the world. The constant waves, the epic-ness of the ocean, laughter with friends - simply soothes the soul.

What a year! Just when you thought ... the hits just kept coming! 😷🤒

It was another year like no other and I'm sure most are wrapped to see the end of it. But like most things there is good and bad and lots of change. That seems to be the only certainty these days ... the uncertainty. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Here's to 2022 finding us kinder, more empathetic of others, more flexible, adaptable, champions of change, and accepting of this ever-changing world and the communities we live in. 👯🏾‍♀️👯‍♂️

Notably, Oxford word of 2021, "Vax" - a relatively new term, but by September was used 72 times more than ever before. While dictionary.com was more hopeful: "Allyship" (noun): the status or role of a person who advocates and actively works for the inclusion of a marginalised or politicised group in all areas of society, not as a member of that group but in solidarity with its struggle and point of view and under its leadership. That fills my heart with joy. 💖

And then the good old shows the with "Strollout":
Taking both the public's choice and judged award for only the second time, with the colloquial noun “referring to the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccination program in Australia, with reference to the perceived lack of speed”. Wow. That says it all really. Wishing all a safe and 🎉

Enjoying coffee in my colour changing coffee mug - a from my bro - while watching the new ❤ Could life get any better while I await my during ? I think not. 🌺

As I await the results of my covid test and the realisation I may need to self isolate this - I am grateful to my friends like Cheryl delivering groceries to my door - for our Mum's inhome care providers Five Good Friends Five Good Friends that are working hard over the break and always contactable to reschedule or reorganise when life changes, as it regularly does, these days. We thank you deeply and sincerely from our hearts for the wonderful care you provide our Mum ( 🇵🇬). 💖

And my wonderful brother, always stepping up as a father of 3 to help with Mum and me, juggling all his family's needs with patience and a generosity of spirit that I know my Dad would be so proud of and I can see reflected in my Mum's eyes daily (when I'm not , of course!). And all my dear friends and family for checking in with messages and phone calls - I am so blessed. 🙏🏾

So, wherever you find yourself this coming New Year's Eve, I hope you have time to reflect on the year that was, but more importantly, look to the year ahead with hope, love and gratitude. As my dearest friend Tish would say: "All is as it should be". I know she isn't the first to say this, but it really resonates with me right now. I hope it brings you some comfort too. Stay safe and happy this NYE. 🎉

Wishing all the blessings of the season, connections with loved ones and a happy and safe New Year. It's been a struggle for most these last two years, but we are still here. Please take time to be kind to yourself and those in your daily life. 👯🏾‍♀️👯‍♂️

Remember what we've learnt: time is precious, life is always about change and we need to adapt in a fair and just way for all. ❤

We know there are enough resources to feed and house all on this planet, especially if we are wise with our resources. Hoping that governments, global conglomerates and philanthropists realise that in 2022 and do something about it. Here's to 2022 being filled with hope, love and peace for all. And some laughs. Laughter is always good. Stay safe and happy. 🥰💖

Wise words from Vincent Van Gogh at the immersive experience over the weekend. Little did he know how prophetic his words would be about how the world would ... more than 100 years later ... view the worth of his paintings. Wow. 🧑‍🎨🖼🎨

Patience and perspective, both wonderful traits to assist the human existence to persevere. Did he have any clue? That his 10 years of frantic painting, showcasing each stage of his life, as his mental health and wellbeing declined, would result in him becoming one of the most famous ever? The impact of his artwork and his life continuing to inspire a century later?

What will our world look like in 100 years? Which stories, people, events will be informing that world of what we contributed? Heady questions for a Monday and me without my first coffee! I'll leave you with my favourite Van Gogh quote from the exhibition:

"The way to know life is to love many things"

May you love many things today. ❤

28/11/2021

Checked out the experience yesterday with dear friends. Interesting concept, that would have been more "immersive" if not as many people in at the same time (such a humid day in Brisbane, the air con was not cutting it with that number of people in the space) and perhaps if there were pods of recliner chairs to lay back and absorb the paintings, his quotes, the different periods, the music, his life.

But what a prolific ... 2000 paintings in 10 years and viewing the difference in his use of colours and subjects throughout the different stages of his life was very special to see.

Tip: don't buy champers there - $22 per glass! Yikes!

One of my all-time fave books is Khalil Gibran's, The Prophet. I remember reading it when living overseas in London and travelling to Israel. ✈

His beautiful prose and the stunning imagery it conjured resonated deeply. Made we weep. Made me feel connected. Brought meaning to my musings on life and on my life. Such purity of emotion. It still moves me today. And came across this poem of his from another book, so had to share. 🏞

May we all become the ocean. 🌊

What's your all time fave book to revisit? Or that moved you like no other? Reminds you of a certain time in your life? And isn't that amazing? 📚

On this in I find myself reminiscing on my last fab long weekend away with the girls. 👯‍♀️💃🏾

How lucky I am to have such wonderful friends in my life and share such a long and precious history. ❤

And, oh, what fun we have! If has taught us anything, it's how important connection is and reaching out to the ones you love and letting them know how truly important they are to you.

So, today, as I enjoy a day of self care with a sauna early this morning, then yoga, and lunch with my dear mum ( 🇵🇬) by the ocean, I'm making time to also reflect on how very blessed I am. 🌺

With borders opening up, but life still so very uncertain ... I am grateful to have my friends and family, my home, my rescue cat, my health (to a degree), my job with a worthwhile NFP, my business, and less restrictions to be out in the world. Wherever this finds you, I hope you are safe and happy. Or at least have the potential to be happy. 😊

Have you heard of this Japanese concept before? I had not, so wanted to share ... Your life's purpose.

Quite a deep reflection for a dark and rainy Thursday morning, amiright? But how often do we really stop and think about it, our life's purpose? How often do we make it inform our decisions, how we live our life, how we treat other people?

I feel like my life's purpose right now is to fight for my mum living with dementia. Fighting the broken aged care system, fighting those that allocate the government funds, fighting for her to feel safe and happy. And isn't that what we all want? To feel safe and happy?

That's my life's purpose today ... but does it change during the course of our lives? It has to doesn't it? When my dad was given 3 months to live, f*cken cancer, but ended up 6 months later deciding out of sheer will that he would hold on till my brother's birthday. And he did. Until 15 minutes past midnight, so as not to pass actually on his birthday. Bloody stubborn man that he was, till the end. My purpose then was to support my family, spend precious time with my dad and family, help dad complete his "bucket list" (a story for another time) and to share our grief with old friends and family and new.

Are we always searching ... Striving for our life's purpose? Is it what drives us always or just what drives us in certain moments? More broadly in my career, with my business, the work I have done, I have always felt driven to share stories that connect us. That highlight the universality of the human existence. That showcase we are all one ... just wanting to be safe and happy.

Would love to further this conversation with you ... please share your thoughts in comments. ❤

Did you survive? Or didn't even notice? How did the global outage of Facebook , Instagram , WhatsApp and Messenger impact you today?

What do you think that means for our daily communications and connections both in business and personally? Especially during covid times ... does it worry you how dependent we are? Or are you totally accepting that this is just how we communicate now and it was just an inconvenience? Would love to hear your thoughts. 🤔
