⭐️ Barry Clarke ⭐️
In 1987 Mount Compass Football Club caught wind of a talented Myponga local footballer by the name of Barry “Baz” Clarke, who had recently purchased a new dairy farm in the area. The football club was quick to jump at the opportunity to recruit the talents of Barry and made no mistake in their recruitment process by getting Barry onboard for 1987.
Barry recalls the intensity of the 1987 pre-season with coach John Murphy, who, if he thought players were not tackling hard enough at training would step in and tackle players to ground himself. Yelling “That’s how you tackle” and then proceeded to restart training.
Barry’s 8 years at Mount Compass from 1987 to 1994 included 157 A grade games & 7 x A grade best and Fairest (Equal Record Holder). Barry also captained the club for a few years. 🐶
Barry is one of South Australia’s most dedicated footballers having played 643 games (558 of them being A grade games). The equal highest total in any Country Football League in South Australia.
People say Barry’s key to success was his half time naps. When half time would come around Barry would unlace the old woollen jersey and enjoy a half time nap.
Barry was a great teammate and a role model for young players. Mount Compass fielded a young side in those years and Barry along with his side-kick Phil Anderson were always the first ones keen for a scuffle. When it came down to it, Barry was as hard as it comes and played football in the right way.
In 1993 Barry suffered a broken cheek bone that required surgery to insert a metal plate. As determined as Barry was, he decided to take the field only weeks after without a doctors clearance which created a rift between the Head Trainer and the Committee.
No matter how bad the injury was at times, Barry always found a way to front up. Only missing 2 games in his 32 years of A grade football (1 game from the broken cheek bone and another for his best mates wedding). He always gave 100% because he never wanted to let his teammates down.
We all know a few old teammates of Barry’s who are looking forward to catching up with him when we celebrate our 100th year anniversary on the 20th of July this year.
