⭐️ Barry Clarke ⭐️

In 1987 Mount Compass Football Club caught wind of a talented Myponga local footballer by the name of Barry “Baz” Clarke, who had recently purchased a new dairy farm in the area. The football club was quick to jump at the opportunity to recruit the talents of Barry and made no mistake in their recruitment process by getting Barry onboard for 1987.

Barry recalls the intensity of the 1987 pre-season with coach John Murphy, who, if he thought players were not tackling hard enough at training would step in and tackle players to ground himself. Yelling “That’s how you tackle” and then proceeded to restart training.

Barry’s 8 years at Mount Compass from 1987 to 1994 included 157 A grade games & 7 x A grade best and Fairest (Equal Record Holder). Barry also captained the club for a few years. 🐶

Barry is one of South Australia’s most dedicated footballers having played 643 games (558 of them being A grade games). The equal highest total in any Country Football League in South Australia.

People say Barry’s key to success was his half time naps. When half time would come around Barry would unlace the old woollen jersey and enjoy a half time nap.

Barry was a great teammate and a role model for young players. Mount Compass fielded a young side in those years and Barry along with his side-kick Phil Anderson were always the first ones keen for a scuffle. When it came down to it, Barry was as hard as it comes and played football in the right way.

In 1993 Barry suffered a broken cheek bone that required surgery to insert a metal plate. As determined as Barry was, he decided to take the field only weeks after without a doctors clearance which created a rift between the Head Trainer and the Committee.

No matter how bad the injury was at times, Barry always found a way to front up. Only missing 2 games in his 32 years of A grade football (1 game from the broken cheek bone and another for his best mates wedding). He always gave 100% because he never wanted to let his teammates down.

We all know a few old teammates of Barry’s who are looking forward to catching up with him when we celebrate our 100th year anniversary on the 20th of July this year.

⭐️ Mick Fitzgerald ⭐️

A minor car accident in 1979 led Mick to the Mount Compass Football club. After reporting the accident at the local police station, he reconnected with the officer Rex Adams who he knew through his time at the Loxton Football Club. At the time Rex happened to be involved at the Bulldogs, and put the vacant player/coach position to Mick.

Mick accepted the role and came to the Bulldogs with plenty of experience, having played league football at Glenelg and also coaching Port Noarlunga and Loxton to premiership success.

In 1979, Mick’s first season with the Bulldogs, saw the team finish 2nd on the ladder for the home and away season. They were to face Strathalbyn in the Grand Final. After a hard fought game Strathalbyn walked away with the chocolates, leaving many wounded dogs behind. The Bulldogs finished up the game with only 14 players on the field.

The following year of 1980, saw the Bulldogs finish minor premiers. Facing Strathalbyn in the Grand Final again. Mick won the toss, kicking with a breeze at Encounter Bay oval. After the previous years beating, the dogs came out firing this time. A 5 goal lead was opened up after the first quarter, with Mick’s boys holding that margin all game to come home with the win and breaking a 21 year drought!🏆

“That premiership year formed a close bond amongst the team that still remains strong to this day” said Mick.

Footballers who played under Mick remember his meticulous attention to detail and tactical know-how against every opponent in the GSFL.

Mick always encouraged his players to play their natural game. But Mick was a huge believer in Discipline in his playing group. That showed when Mick brought in a “team rule” - No drinking the night before games. Players remember Mick used to ring up the local watering hole on a Friday night asking if any of the footballers were down there drinking.

It’s hard to believe the massive impact Mick had on the Mount Compass Football Club in 3 seasons. Mick will always be a huge part of the football club and we look forward to hearing more stories from him during the 100th Year celebration weekend.

⭐️ 1954 Premiership Team ⭐️

Mount Compass Football Club’s first A grade premiership team. The Maroon & Golds is what they were known as back in the 50’s.

The team lead by an experienced captain in Allan Tonkin, proved early that they were capable of challenging the top teams in the competition. Finishing the season in 3rd position on the ladder.

In the first final “The Maroon and Golds” were able to defeat “The New Rovers” side by taking their chances in front of goal to run out the winners by 9.3 (57) to 6.10 (46).

The Preliminary final the following week was a tough contest between “The Maroon and Golds” and Yankalilla, luckily the inaccuracy in front of goals didn’t cost them the game and they ran out winners 7.17 (59) to 9.4 (58).

The Grand Final saw Compass come up against the Minor Premiers in Victor Harbour. The final was labelled a “Hard and Bruising affair” by many players and supporters. Compass were able to prevail 6.20 (56) to 4.10 (34) in a windy affair down at Goolwa Oval. Winning Mount Compass their first ever premiership 🏆
