For this week's episode of Uprise Radio, Mercedes talks with Leandra, Southern Arrernte woman living on Widjabul Wia-bal country at Terania Creek.
Leandra shares her experience of the flood disaster, the community response and the total lack of state support. The floods are discussed within the broader context of climate collapse, we discuss what lessons can be learnt from such disasters and how communities can prepare as they become more frequent and intense.

"Yeah. Basically there’s no point waiting around for safety from some external source like the so-called Australian government. Climate change is here now. These events are predicted to increase in intensity and frequency and that has definitely not been disproved over the last few years, where we have just seen it unfold. Basically, learning from this experience, if we sit around and wait for help it’s not gonna come. We need to get organised in our communities. A big part of that is networking, who’s your neighbours, communicating with people, what are the risks in the areas you live in, community resilience on an emotional level as well as a tactical level. Have emergency response plans if there are any particular hazards in your area like fires or floods. I imagine it’s only going to keep getting worse so yeah, we better get organised and prepared because its basically up to us." - Leandra
