Residents protested against the army's obstruction in the transportation of house construction materials in Ward No. 1 of Babuchara Union and Dighinala Union. This demonstration was organized by the initiative of residents of Ward No. 1 of Babuchara Union Parishad and Dighinala Union.
Today Sunday, November 6, 2022, at 9:20 in the morning, residents took out a protest march from Babuchara Nuyobazar.
At this time, the residents shouted slogans with various demands and displayed banners and placards. People from all walks of life including two thousand men and women in the area participated in it.
Babuchara Union Parishad Chairman Santosh Jevan Chakma presided over the protest rally organized under the slogan 'Give back the rightful rights of the people.
Pragyan Jyoti Chakma, former Chairman of Dighinala Union, said in the rally that the army suddenly stopped bringing home construction materials in 2019. Since then the people of this area are forced to live in a lot of hardship. To get rid of this, we the public representatives and scrutineers have gone to the Zone Commander, to the Deputy Commissioner and through him have given a memorandum to the Prime Minister. But the government has not taken any remedial measures. It is for this reason that we have gathered in this protest rally today. We strongly demand from this rally for the government to lift the ban immediately and relieve the people of the area from their misery.
Former chairman Chandra Ranjan Chakma said, "We are not able to bring home construction materials due to obstruction by the army. Our backs are against the wall today. We will continue to protest until we get our rights back."
He said to the prime minister, you are not only the prime minister of the Bengali nation but the prime minister of all the people of Bangladesh. As you know, we cannot bring any materials to build the house due to the army's obstruction. For that, we are protesting today. We will hold meetings until we get our rights.
Alkesh Chakma said that the constitution of Bangladesh mentions that all ethnicities, all groups, all classes, and all communities of the country will enjoy equal rights. When we are not allowed to take bricks, or cement here, barricaded, we feel it is a clear violation of the law. Because here only we who are people of the hill tribe, people of hill ethnicity are being harassed and abused.
Pratibha Chakma said," We have submitted a memorandum to the people of Babuchara and Dighinala Union to the Hon'ble Prime Minister. But to date, there have been no good answers. Today through this gathering we want to know, have we committed a crime, are we not citizens of Bangladesh? We want this answer from the government about whether we have the right to live as citizens of Bangladesh.
Dipulaksh Chakma said we are citizens of independent Bangladesh. It is the responsibility of the government to preserve the basic rights of the citizens of a free country: food, clothing, shelter, education, and medical care. The most important of them is accommodation. But even though we are citizens of Bangladesh, if the people of Ward No. 1 of Babuchara Union and Dighinala Union cannot bring construction materials to build a residence, is it not a violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens? So, we will keep talking and talking until our basic rights are protected.
He urged the government and concerned administrations to immediately withdraw the ban on the transportation of house-building materials.
In the president's speech, Santosh Jiban Chakma, Chairman of Babuchara Union, said, since the ban started in 2019, I have gone to MP, Zone Commander, UNO, Upazila Chairman, and SP and talked about the happiness and sorrow of the people. But no actionable remedy was found. Finally, we have given a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner assured that he would forward the memorandum to the Prime Minister soon. But to date, he has not got any good answer.
He expressed solidarity with the demands of the people of the area and urged the government and all concerned administrations to withdraw the ban immediately.
