I recently had a wonderful time attending the Hewison High Tea with Daniella Gozlan from St Kilda Shule. It’s a bit frustrating for those who’ve carefully curated beautiful aesthetic grids, but Instagram has started rolling out a significant change. The grid size has shifted, with pic sizes now set to 1080 x 1350 px. As a result, older square images may appear misaligned, with text sometimes getting cut off. The update is being rolled out gradually, so check your grid to see if you’ve been affected.
Don’t worry, though—there’s a way to manually fix it! Here’s how:
1. Adjust your old pics:
* Open Instagram and go to your profile.
* Tap the image that appears misaligned in the grid.
* Select “Edit”.
2. Adjust the preview:
* In the FIT section, use the pinch-to-zoom gesture to adjust the image so it fits properly within the new 1080 x 1350 px dimensions.
3. Or use a background:
* If you prefer, you can add a border (black or white) to fill in the empty space around your image.
4. Save changes:
* Once you’re happy with the alignment, tap “Done”.
Remember, simply creating images to the new dimension isn’t enough; the type area has also changed, so your text may still get cut off. Be sure to stay within the adjusted type area to avoid this!

When my daughter switched schools aged 10, she was already socially behind her peers, many of whom were active on social media. I allowed her to join Instagram, even though the age limit was 13, so she could fit in. But I insisted on full access to her account. What followed was a series of poor decisions, with both her and her friends navigating a world they were too young for. I even ended up stepping in to guide her friends on how to respond when she was cyberbullied, despite having already learned what to do at school.

At the time, there was nothing to stop her from joining social media. Now, with the Australian government proposing to ban under-16s from platforms like Instagram and TikTok, I wonder: how will kids navigate this and how the government will enforce this?

Is this the right solution? While social media is a powerful tool, is banning the answer? Could we find a better balance—one that combines age-appropriate spaces, parental controls, and digital literacy education?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. It’s a complex issue that affects us all.
