Last week’s open mic was a real treat for the lovers of guitar.

Rory Matthews played his own special renditions of cover songs, which, at first, had you guessing what songs he was actually covering. With crystal clear tenor vocals that filled the auditorium like it was a cathedral, Rory backed up his great song choices playing a beautiful guitar – handmade by Cole Clark. His rendition of Lady Gaga’s Shallow was especially haunting, and it was so good, I turned to Rory’s wife and wondered whether he could play it again that night. And on top of that, Rory’s a lovely fellow and a real gentleman. He’s also an expert luthier.

As a guitarist, Matt Elder lives up to his name. Encased in a young body, Matt is an old man with the guitar, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he played the instrument in a previous life. Playing a variety of styles and songs, Matt performed with great enthusiasm while using experimental techniques I’d never seen on a fret board. The guitar wasn’t just an instrument of 6 strings, it became a sounding board, a mini drum set, an acoustic beatbox. After seeing him perform twice at the open mic, I believe he now should be known as the Matt the Elder – cause his music is mature beyond his years.

Chris Hayden took the stage, and in the space of a couple of songs, he wowed the crowd with his dynamic voice and excellent guitar playing. Chris is somewhat shy and reserved when you first meet him, but he’s quite the extrovert when it comes to performing music. He literally came alive on the night with some classic covers on a gorgeous sounding Takamine. Chris is co-hosting a St Paddy’s Day concert at the Robbo Bowling Club in which anyone can come along and play and sing. It’s an Irish themed event, but I’m pretty sure they won’t mind people playing a non-Irish song, if you don’t know a ditty from the Emerald Isle. The gig is this Wednesday from 5pm, to be sure.

Here’s just three stories about local people who love music and who wanna share their music with the world.

If you wanna share your music, or if you just wanna listen to people sharing theirs, join us at the Robbo Bowling Club this Sunday from 5pm (till late!)

Open Mic – Robbo Club
February 7 – 5pm Start

There’s nothing like an open mic
A game we all can play
You bring along your vocal cords
And sing your heart away

Instruments are needed too
A guitar or a bass
If keyboards are your forte
Then we’ve got one here, in case

If you prefer a piccolo
A flute to toot your horn
You’ll get to play along with strings
Cause guitars are the norm

So bring your voice and bring your friends
And bring the family, too
And bring that love of music
It’s the greatest part of you

Paul McCann here. Look I’ve been working the Irish radio for 25 years, and now I’m moving into cyberspace with the show, Craic with Mc. During my time on the radio, I was interviewing numerous local singer/songwriters, and finding out more about them and their music, and I want to continue that with my new podcast series.

So I’m looking for you. If you’re a singer/songwriter I’ve interviewed in the past, or if you’re an emerging artist and you want you music out there, I want your story and material on my podcast.
