In Episode 1 of our upcoming Talking Q***r special of Talking Words Podcast we’re joined by award-winning writer of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, Ellen van Neerven. 🎙📚

Ellen, of Mununjali Yugambeh (South East Queensland) and Dutch heritage, has authored three gorgeous and galvanising books – their first, Heat and Light, is a work of fiction which earned Ellen the David Unaipon Award, the Dobbie Literary Award and the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Indigenous Writers Prize.

Comfort Food, Ellen’s first poetry collection was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Kenneth Slessor Prize and highly commended for the 2016 Wesley Michel Wright Prize.

Throat, their second poetry collection, is hot off the presses, having been released at the end of March this year, and boldly and dauntlessly delves into the complexities of love, language, and land. Throat was shortlisted for the 2020 Queensland Judith Wright Calanthe Award for a poetry collection, and was awarded the inaugural UQP Quentin Bryce Award.

Leona had the honour of speaking to Ellen on August 26th of this year, recording their conversation remotely to account for pandemic travel restrictions.

We can’t wait to share this episode with you on January 28! 🌟

Have you read Mammoth yet? Take a listen to our special isolation episode with Chris Flynn, and if you need more convincing, check out Lucy's review below👇

Do you ever lapse into a serious mood after reading books with quite heavy content? Then along comes a book that makes you laugh, makes you take yourself less seriously, reminds you that reading can be informative and eye-opening while also being wildly pleasurable. Mammoth by Chris Flynn has been that book for me.

Our narrator is a 13,000 year old fossilised Mammoth - and that's just where the fun starts. Mammut finds himself in a storeroom about to be sold at auction when he meets a Tyrannosaurus Bataar (T. Bataar for short) and they decide to share their stories of how they ended up there. A 10 million year old penguin, Queen Hatsepshut's hand, and a Siberian Pterodactylus join the fray, with plenty of fossil banter and puns to keep you giggling (yes, they all make fun of T. Bataar's tiny dinosaur arms). Ultimately the stories they share with one another are sad ones, highlighting the scale of devastation hominids have wrought upon each other, the Earth and its other inhabitants. But they are told with humour, and warmth, and instead of being consumed by dread, room is made for us to consider the insignificance of humanity to Mother Nature and within the depths of time.

This book is the perfect antidote to the paralysing anxiety of our modern times because it shows us that there isn't only one way to tell this story. That to tackle climate chaos we're going to need a healthy amount of imagination and humility. That perhaps it would be wise to listen to the fossils who've lived and died throughout deep time.

Mammoth was difficult to put down - it's delightfully absurd, imaginative and self-reflexive. A fantastic read that I'd recommend to anyone 📚
