The South Sydney Rabbitohs look like strong candidates to finish back in the top 8 this season after recruiting former Clive Churchill medallist Jack Wighton to the club.

Despite losing Campbell Graham and Tyrone Munro to injury, wighton will be a perfect foil in the mean time, moving to the centres where he has played on multiple occasions in State of Origin.

Whilst most have the Rabbitohs playing finals footy this year, the pressure will be on coach Jason Demetriou if they get off to a slow start. With the opening 5 rounds being against manly, Brisbane, roosters, bulldogs and warriors, failing to capitalise on that schedule could see Demetriou being on the hot seat as first coached replace if it goes badly again in season 2024.

The New Zealand Warriors were the toast of the NRL in season 2023. Led by rookie coach Andrew Webster, the warriors surprised all in the game by finishing 4th with a record of 16 wins and 8 losses.

Despite being tipped by most to finish in the bottom 4, the warriors were led by club legend Shaun Johnson, who was very unlucky not to win Dally M player of the year. In season 2024, the warriors are hoping another club legend, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck can propel them further into the finals after returning from a stint in rugby union.

The warriors have also upgraded in other areas of the field with edge back rower Kurt Capewell joining the club, replacing Josh Curran.

With all of the momentum behind them heading into season 2024, there’s no reason why the warriors can not repeat what last years performance and finish in the bottom half of the top 8.

The Cronulla Sharks will be the surprise team of season 2024. The pain suffered by their shock finals loss to the Roosters last season will be the genesis of their resurgence into the top 4 this season.

Despite losing Wade Graham, Matt Moylan and Connor Tracey, the improvement will be found in the halves connection that Nicho Hynes and Braydon Trindall develop. Already showing glimpses in the all star game, this duo will be one of the best halves pairings in the competition by the end of the season.

Add to that another year of Craig Fitzgibbon tutelage around the club and all things point to the sharks being there or there abouts come September.

For betting purposes, sharks are paying $3.60 for a top 4 finish and $1.70 to make the 8 if you’re a little more conservative.

The dragons begin season 2024 under a new regime, led by Sharks premiership coach Shane Flanagan. The dragons faithful will be hoping for a quick turn around given their disastrous 16th position finish to last season, which saw their best player and captain, Ben Hunt, openly try and leave mid season.

Add to this that it’s been 5 years since the red V made the finals, and a bad feeling just hangs over everyone’s head at the moment. Considering the losses of young talents, Talatau Amone, Jayden Sullivan and Billy Burns, there is no cause for optimism anytime soon.

New recruits Kyle Flanagan, Tom Eisenhuth and Raymond Faitala-Mariner will provide a level of professionalism and balance to the roster, however, they hardly move the needle enough for anyone to think the dragons will do anything but finish in the bottom 4 once again for season 2024.

Manly enter season 2024 with little fanfare after another underwhelming season in 2023. Since making the finals in 2021, the Sea Eagles have finished 11th and 12th, mostly due to injuries and off the field club politics.

Season 2024 looks to be more of the same results wise for the northern beaches club, despite a strong class of recruits joining the club. Luke Brooks, who will be the best halves partner Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans has had since Kieran Foran left the club, will be pivotal if Manly are any chance to sneak into the top 8 this season.

However, it feels like all factors relating to Manly’s success that are not related to the health of star fullback Tom Trbojevic feel pointless. The key playmaker will need to play 20+ games at full fitness if Manly are any chance of playing finals football, and the history of data fans have over the last 3 years points to that being a slim possibility.

It feels like another underwhelming season for Manly, finishing just outside the 8 in the 9-13 position area.

This Panthers team solidified themselves as the greatest of the modern era after securing a third straight premiership victory over the Brisbane Broncos in last years grand final.

The nucleus of edwards, luai, Cleary and Yeo was once again pivotal in guiding the team through another long regular season and finals campaign.

However this year may be the hardest test of their mettle yet. The panthers are losing key pieces in Stephen Crichton and Spencer Leniu, who’ve both been livewires for the last few season. Crichton in particular has been critical, scoring in all 3 winning grand finals.

Despite signing Daine Laurie and talented outside back Paul Alamoti, one can’t help but feel that the salary cap has finally done its job in depriving the Panthers of the talent necessary to be undisputedly the best team in the competition.

Whilst they’ll sit in the top 4 once again, it feels almost impossible that they’ll be able to 4-peat. If they do, they’ll be entering in to the greatest teams in the history of sports conversation.

The Raiders begin season 2024 behind the 8 ball losing their best player Jack Wighton to the Rabbitohs. This, on top of their total capitulation to the Knights in the first week of the finals last year appears to be the start of the end for the raiders and any chance of a premiership.

Their roster might be the least talented in the entire competition and the front office has not been able to add any top end talent to the roster for season 2024.

I wouldn’t be surprised if coach Ricky Stuart was no longer at the helm at the end of the season if the wheels fall off the wagon in relation to on-field performance.

Any result other than a bottom 4 finish would be viewed as an overachievement for this Raiders squad.

The mighty Brisbane Broncos begin season 2024 with the sourest taste in their collective mouths after their catastrophic second half collapse against Penrith in last years grand final.

It will be hard for the Broncos to go back to the big dance given the loss of key players Herbie Farnworth and Thomas Flegler to the Dolphins.

Coach Kevvie Walters will need to show his coaching guile in order to manage his team back to a top 4 position. Whilst he has some of the most elite talent in key positions, the depth of the broncos will be exposed more than ever this season.

Given this elite talent such as Reece Walsh, Payne Haas and Ezra Mam, the broncos will navigate through a difficult 2024 campaign to finish with a record of 17 wins and 7 losses, securing a top 4 position. Will the broncos win 17.5 games?
