🦅 BIGGEST IMPROVER IN 2024? 🦅

Amid the disastrous on-field moments of last season, there were some shining lights, including the potential of Reuben Ginbey.

The Eagles chose the West Australian at pick 9 in the 2022 national draft and he featured in 17 of 23 games on debut.

At 191cm and 83kg, Ginbey did not look out of place against more seasoned, big-bodied opponents, either in defence or in the middle.

With another summer under his belt and retirements presenting more opportunities, Ginbey should take a big step in 2024. He has the power and size to become a young gun.

✈️ CAN THE BOMBERS END THEIR 20-YEAR FINALS VICTORY DROUGHT? ✈️

Given I’ve left the Bombers out of the eight in my pre-season predictions, the answer is no.

But that doesn’t mean Essendon won’t get better in 2024.

We suspect they will. The inclusion of four players from rival clubs will help, as will the continued development of the Bombers’ younger core of players.

Will it be enough to break a 7000-day finals win drought?

We doubt it, but the Bombers are building and can take a few more big scalps this season.

There were some good AFL judges who felt Mitch Owens was every bit as impressive as Harry Sheezel in 2023, considering the role he played in attack.

He finished fourth in the club B&F, kicking 26 goals from his 23 games last year and ranking elite in disposals for a key forward.

Adelaide is in an excellent position cap-wise and is a side on the rise, which means they are very much in acquisition mode rather than having to worry too much about retention.

Clayton Oliver will take “extended leave” to deal with complex personal challenges and focus on his wellbeing with no firm time frame on a return to the club or to AFL football.

We know Will Ashcroft won’t play until the late second half of the season following his ill-timed ACL last year, but all the talk will centre around when the Lions can get him back.

He showed in 18 games (averaging 22 disposals and two lots of three Brownlow votes within his first seven games) and is going to be a star.

Hopefully he is fit and firing in the finals.

Josh Weddle carried on his status as the time trial king at Hawthorn by cruising away from the field in Hawthorn’s return to training.

The running machine previously took out a yoyo test and time trial late last year in the early weeks of pre-season and showed no signs of slowing down as the Hawks worked through some ball movement drills in hot sunshine on Wednesday.
