ISLAMABAD: Students from Pakistan shined bright at the 65th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) 2024 as they secured silver and bronze medal at the global competition.

According to the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), the competition was held from July 11 to 22, in Bath, United Kingdom.

Razi Hasan Mansoor, a student from Karachi, claimed the silver medal, while Muhammad Ahmad Bhatti of Karachi School won the bronze medal.

Additionally, Muhammad Mehd Arif of Lahore's Sundus School bagged "Honorable Mention" for Pakistan at the international event.

This success follows closely on the heels of another achievement, with two Pakistani students clinching bronze medals at the International Biology Olympiad in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The Pakistani team participated in the Olympiad under the auspices of the STEM Career Program, a joint program of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) University.

The mathematics team was trained at Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) University, Lahore Campus and was mentored by Prof Dr Sarfaraz Ahmed and Dr Hani Shakir.

Under the auspices of the PAEC, PIEAS University conducts National Science Talent Competition every year in four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology.

In the competition held in 19 cities across Pakistan, selected students are sent to participate in the International Olympiad under the Stamp Career Program.

Internationally, the American, Chinese and South Korean teams were winners.

India's Olympiad total score of 167 ranks fourth, just one notch behind third-place of South Korea. The total score of the US’s winning team is 192.

All 609 students in Olympiad including 528 males and 81 females participated in IMO 2024 in which 108 countries participated.

Indian team's Aditya Mangodi's performance ranked him fifth — the best performance so far by any member of the Indian team.

Speaking to international media, the winning team said that the IMO "provided them with an opportunity to meet past medal winners, experts and their peers from over a hundred countries."

In the Indian team, Mangodi, Ananda Bhadhuri, Guwahati Talwar, Rasil Mathur from Mumbai won gold medals.

Meanwhile, Arjun Geetha from Delhi won the silver medal and Siddharth Chopra received "Honorable Mention”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team on X, as he wrote: "It's a matter of immense joy and pride that India has come 4th in its best-ever performance in the International Maths Olympiad.

"Our contingent has brought home 4 Golds and one Silver Medal. This feat will inspire several other youngsters and help make mathematics even more popular."

11/07/2024

The Australian cities with the rudest customers have been revealed, along with the habits that annoy staff the most.

BizCover, Australia's leading online insurance service for small businesses, found Sydney took the top spot for having the worst-behaved customers in the country.

A survey of 1,000 business owners across 22 cities found Brisbane was the second-rudest, followed by Geelong, Canberra and Adelaide.

The rest of the top ten was made up by Ballarat, Perth, Newcastle, Melbourne and Wollongong.

As for what customers are doing to annoy workers, the survey pointed to price complaints, shelf stashing, rowdy drinkers and bill splitting.

'The most common type of bad behaviour in Australia is complaining about the price - Brisbane took the top spot for this one,' BizCover said.

'In retail stores, Aussie customers are most guilty of changing their minds and leaving unpurchased items on random shelves. Newcastle is most guilty of this.

'Geelong has loudest and rowdiest pub patrons, while Brisbane boozers are most likely to complain about the prices.

'Ballarat diners are the most likely to ask to split the bill at cafes and restaurants.'

When looking at specific industries, the five worst acts committed by customers in bars were complaining about prices, loud and rowdy behaviour, ordering a cocktail off-menu and requesting changes, mentioning knowing the owner for discounts and clicking fingers or whistling to get waiter's attention.

Retail customers were reprimanded for leaving items on random shelves, unfolding clothes on display tables, paying while talking or texting, jokingly asking to use employee's staff discount and asking staff to check stock 'out the back' repeatedly.

Cafe and restaurant customers were found guilty of splitting bills with large groups of people, bringing in outside food or drinks, ordering meals and requesting extensive ingredient changes, not using manners when served and making overly complicated coffee orders.

'Our survey exposes the cities where poor customer service etiquette is most rampant, with Sydney leading the pack,' said Sharon Kenny, Head of Marketing at BizCover, said.

'Common issues like complaining about prices, leaving items on random shelves, and splitting bills in large groups are prevalent across the country.

'Despite these challenges, many business owners still report positive customer experiences, underscoring the potential for improvement in customer interactions.'

Despite coming up with a large list of negative interactions, 55 per cent of business owners rated their overall experience with customers as 'excellent' while 39 per cent rated it as 'good'.

Only 0.5 per cent considered their experience 'poor' or 'very poor.'

However, 41 per cent of small businesses observed customers have become less patient and more demanding while 15 per cent noticed an increase in politeness and consideration.

The survey also considered how men and women differ as customers.

Of the business owners, 65 per cent said women practice better customer service etiquette.

However, 51 per cent said men were more likely to intervene when witnessing bad behaviour.

Customers aged 45-55 demonstrate the best manners, whereas those 24 and under are considered the least courteous.

The survey was complete with the help of research agency PureProfile between May 12 and May 20, 2024.

BizCover also surveyed 1,039 of its customers from around Australia between May 17 and May 27, 2024.

BizCover is an online platform that allows business owners to compare quotes from the top Australian insurers.

The night comes back in fragments: the sound of exploding glass, the frantic call made to police, the tiny shivering bodies emerging from the flames.
Eve’s hand shakes as she pieces it together. She is sitting in her living room in Western Sydney, the burnt-out shell of her neighbour's house - now a crime scene - visible through the blinds.
What happened on this quiet street in the early hours of Sunday morning is hard to reconcile.
A fire that would leave three children dead, including a five-month-old girl, and four more hospitalised alongside their mother.
And a stunning allegation: that this horror - so evident in the wreckage left behind and on the faces of witnesses - was inflicted on these children by their father, who then blocked their attempts to flee.
New South Wales Police are treating the Lalor Park house fire as a domestic violence-related multiple homicide, and the state’s premier has said the 28-year-old father of seven could face “the most serious charges on offer”.
The case, which has sparked mass outrage, comes while Australia is already in the grips of a self-declared “national crisis” of domestic and family violence - a child is dying at the hands of a parent almost once a fortnight, according to research.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has offered a flurry of reforms and funding to stop the scourge.
But in response to a string of alleged killings this week, he conceded that the country “has a long way to go” in turning the tide.
"Again, we have seen lives stolen, futures torn away. Every death is its own universe of devastation," he said
Eve - who has asked to have her name changed due to safety concerns - still can’t come to terms with what happened.
Somehow, she “blames herself” for the deaths of the children across the road because she didn’t notice the inferno sooner, didn’t call emergency services fast enough.
And yet, her actions were both brave and consequential.
She and her husband were alerted to the violence unfolding by another neighbour, Jarrod Hawkins, who came to their home looking for reinforcements.
Mr Hawkins said he had been woken by a “loud pop” shortly before 01:00 local time (15:00 GMT). Worried his car might be being broken into, he went outside and immediately saw the flames.
He says he ran across the road without pausing to think and tried to beat the door down.
In the moments that followed, Mr Hawkins would crawl into the house repeatedly to pull out three children - two young boys aged four and seven, and a girl aged nine.
An 11-year-old would eventually be rescued by police, along with two boys aged two and six who were found in a critical condition and died in hospital.
Mr Hawkins then woke up Eve and her family who phoned the authorities.
Soon, Eve’s husband was on their neighbour’s lawn, trying to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher. Eve helped usher some of the children from the scene, doing her best to calm them and keep them warm as they adjusted to the freezing air outside.
She remembers one of the boys saying blankly at one point: "He tried to kill me."
Another rescuer would later tell a local paper they heard a similar remark from several of the tiny survivors: "Dad tried to kill us."
But it was an innocent exchange Eve shared with the four-year-old who escaped, as he looked back at the charred remains of his home, that stays with her.
“He just kept asking whether his toys would be safe inside.”
As emergency services started to take control of the scene, Eve took her cue to leave.
One of the final things she witnessed was “police carrying the Dad out, who was in his underwear”. She would soon learn that the five-month-old girl had died before rescuers could reach her.
Speaking to media later Sunday morning, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty alleged the children’s father had tried to stop “police, responders and neighbours” from entering the burning house, “with the intention of keeping the kids inside”.
“At this stage it does appear the 28-year-old is responsible for... [the] young lives that have been tragically taken away,” Det Supt Doherty added.
Now, a makeshift memorial lies on Freeman Street. The colourful flowers and cards offering messages of support stand in stark contrast to the police tape and forensics tent.
Members of the community have described the children as “lively”, “outgoing” and “polite”.
“They were known to a lot of people - those kids were unreal, great manners… full of energy, just typical kids,” Mr Hawkins had earlier told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
As masked investigators sift through their house, an elderly resident watches on. Choked by tears, he literally can’t speak about his memories of the family.
“They were happy,” another neighbour says simply.
Premier Chris Minns has called the tragedy a “deep wound” that will be widely felt.
“These children deserved a loving home with safety and security - instead, they’re gone,” he added, promising that those who remain would get the support they needed.

Pakistan cricket fans are in for a treat as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has included a much-anticipated match against arch-rivals India in the draft schedule for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

The Pakistan Cricket Board submitted a draft schedule to the ICC, which places New Zealand and Bangladesh alongside Pakistan and India in Group A. Group B will feature Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan.

According to the Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI), all participating countries have pledged their support for the Champions Trophy. The BCCI will finalise its decision after consulting with the Indian government.

In northern India, defiant farmers continue their steadfast protest amidst challenges posed by the sowing season.

Despite facing political obstacles and personal sacrifices, their determination is growing.
For nearly five months, around 40 farmers have been living in reinforced tents on a highway in northern India, 212 kilometres (132 miles) from Delhi. These farmers have been protesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, despite their numbers dwindling since earlier this year.

In February, tens of thousands of farmers gathered at the Shambhu border, a key interstate checkpoint, expressing anger towards the government for not fulfilling its promise to guarantee a minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

The proposed MSP, which would be at least 50% higher than the cost of production, was seen as a crucial safety net to protect the farming community from volatile price fluctuations.

The farmers remain resolute, continuing their protest in hopes that the government will honor its commitment and provide the much-needed price stability that could safeguard their livelihoods.

Emboldened by the success of the mass farmer movement in 2020-21, which forced Modi to repeal laws intended to modernise the agricultural sector, they took to protest again.

The demand for the MSP is one of 10 presented by the farmers, and perhaps its most crucial. Others include changes to pensions, insurance schemes and loan waivers.

But can the protesters keep up the pressure even as their numbers decline in the face of harsh weather, lack of unity, and the beginning of the summer sowing season?

Young farmer struck by shrapnel fights for his community
On a recent cloudy morning, the deserted-looking campsite lay eerily silent, with only a few elderly men sitting in the kitchen tent.

“We’re only 30-40 of us here overnight, but wait for a few hours and you will see,” an elderly farmer said, as he scooped up the curry with his day-old bread. And indeed by noon, over 1,000 farmers from neighbouring villages had joined them.

Tejveer Singh, a farmer forum spokesperson, acknowledged that it was mostly elderly men and few women protesting.

“Consistent demonstration requires patience — which elderly folks have, not the youth. Our young farmers have a different role, to organize the food, do the heavy lifting and stand at the forefront when we expect violence from authorities,” he said. “Even now, thousands of farmers are ready to answer our call, should we need it.”

One such young participant is 21-year-old Harpreet Singh who visits the protest site nearly every day.

On February 13, the local state police dropped tear gas shells via drones on protesting farmers, and shrapnel from one of the canisters tore into Harpreet’s legs. Three days later, still at the protest site, he realized the wounds were infected, which led to a weeks-long recovery process at the hospital.

This did not deter the young activist. “I come from a small family of farmers. My only chance at making a name for myself is to fight for the rights of my community,” he said, smiling.

‘My vision is gone for life’

But not everyone can remain in high spirits.

Davander Singh Bhangu, who was also present at the site on February 13, permanently lost vision in one eye after a piece of shrapnel struck his face.

“I was with them for the cause, but what did I get in return? My vision is gone for life and they haven’t even bothered reaching out,” he said, referring to the leaders organizing the current movement. While Bhangu received Rs 50,000 (€560, $600) in compensation from the farmers’ union, he said that he was not looking for money but felt used and abandoned by the cause.

Another farmer, Sandeep Singh, said he could not afford to be a part of the movement. He has taken to driving rental cars to make ends meet while his father and brothers tend to their small farm.

“If we go and sit at the dharna (sit-in) every day, who will sow our seeds, who will earn the bread?” he said.

Farmers’ unions have strongly denied any allegations of corruption following rumours that some farmers who had negotiated with government representatives were subsequently able to purchase additional land.

Farmers take advantage of a weakened government

Prime Minister Modi returned to power in June for a third consecutive term, although his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) now relies on the support of coalition partners to remain in power. The ruling party faced significant setbacks, losing half its seats in Haryana and failing to secure any seats in Punjab — two crucial states where farmers have actively mobilized against his administration.

Despite farmers in these regions viewing the election results as a partial victory, no representatives from the federal government have reached out to them since the results were announced.

Sumit Ganguly, a professor of political science at Indiana University in the US, said the farmers still have advantages in their favour.

“This is a weakened government and the farmers are aware of it… They did succeed the first time around in getting the Modi government to at least put off the legislation,” he said. “They tasted blood the first time around.”

A diminishing movement?

However, the farmers also face a disadvantage. “Sustaining any movement of collective action is always very difficult because some people can be bought out, some won’t have the time to devote, some people get tired of it not working. I am not surprised that the movement has diminished,” Ganguly added.

Jasdeep Singh, political activist and editor of the Trolley Times, a newsletter on the farmers’ movement, agreed.

“It will be hard to sustain this movement for long. Even the villages around the Shambhu border have complained because they find it hard to commute,” he said. “While removing them may be a hard task, I think it may fizzle out.”

Agriculture policy expert Devender Sharma said the government is more likely to give in to their demand for a legal guarantee of MSP.

“This is a genuine demand. Globally farmers are calling for guaranteeing the cost of production,” he said. “Farmers all over the world now realize they have been shortchanged for decades as a result of which farming is in a serious crisis,” he added.

“I am sure the government will sooner than later have to accept the demand of farmers for a legally guaranteed MSP.” According to Sharma, implementing legal MSP guarantees would put more money into the hands of farmers, leading to greater prosperity across rural India.

Tejveer Singh, spokesperson for the farmers, refuted claims that the movement has stalled. He emphasized that the upcoming regional elections in five key states — Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Delhi, and Bihar — in 2024-25 present a significant opportunity for the movement, giving it an “edge.”

“We are working on putting pressure on the opposition parties to raise the MSP issue in the parliament,” he said. “The issue of MSP is a very complicated one… We know it is going to be a long fight, we are willing to make the effort,” Singh stressed.
